7 days of Florida. First impression. Florida has shopping centers, golf courses, $1 million houses with burnt-out crabgrass lawns, (they mow lawns on February 29th). Very little traffic. People who drive cars are clueless. Most people drive golfcarts because they start drinking at 9 am and they don't have to contend with airbags when they hit you. The backroads are straight and flat. If you stand on your toes you can see the entire state so you don't have to go anywhere for a better view. The 55+ communities have ADULT swimming pools open to people age 30 and up. That probably keeps the level of interest up. PA doesn't have adult swimming pools. We have adult bookstores but I think you only have to be 18.
Ocala is the horse capital. Horse shows are in Wellington which is 3 hours south. That keeps northerners in synk with their body clock so they can get up at 3 AM to go to a show. it also is good for GM, the trailer industry and Big Oil.
Mosquitos are a cash crop. If you keep a trap in your bedroom you can drop the overnight captures off at the blood bank for coupons for bandaids. Women wear Backwoods Off and men wear wd-40. That's pretty convenient if you are in a smoky bar and have difficulty knowing what you are talking to.
Will post more later about the reason(s) that you should come to FL. This is not a guarantee of a good time. Actual results may vary.

Question: What is the population of the Villages broken down by sex?
Answer: None. Alcohol is the only real issue here.

Do you work for the Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce?
Most of us really wanted your recommendation but some of us can go on without too much sadness.
Further questions;
Mosquitoes. Do you have screens?
Traffic. Are you staying in The Villages?
First time in Florida. REALLY, the first time? What has taken you so long kiddo???:pepper2:
Adult bookstore. We have one nearby.
Flat view. Ohio people feel at home.
Drinking in the A.M. Most people I know well don't drink as much as they used to. Don't know any morning drinkers here at all.
But WELCOME to the forum. You sound like fun.

We've been here almost 5 years and haven't been bit by a mosquito yet. In Ohio where we came from you go in the back yard and they will carry you away. We're glad that not everyone likes it here. Leaves more room for us to enjoy ourselves.

Jeff is a photographer and an excellent one by his website that he linked in another post on this forum.
Jeff did you come here to primarily find horse and rider subjects around here?
I see that is one of your specialties.

Thanks for the compliment, G'Girl! Photography got me thru school. college and the military. Yes, much of my work has been equestrian, and my 19 y.o. Eventing daughter is in Ocala, so I will chase her competitions often.
Am in Lecanto for the weekend with my twisted ankle up on a beer keg and photo run tomorrow to the coast.
Happy Weekend!

Everyone has different likes and dislikes. Evidently this is not the type of area that suits you. You're not the first and certainly not the last.....but I will say that the majority do love it here.
As Gracie said, I also looked at your photography and it is very nice. If you are looking for a place in Florida to settle, have you considered other areas? Maybe closer the the beautiful beaches? This would give you more photo opportunities.
Wherever you end up, I hope you start enjoying life.

I am a humorist at heart... The Villages is lovely and I really like the people that I am meeting. I am here to stay and you will find me at Panera Bread most mornings and at country line dance lessons as often as possible.
Hopefully I won't offend anyone more than Jackie Mason or certainly Don Rickles. Life is good.
Thanks for the response!

Thanks for the feedback. My facebook friends have become acustom to my occasional rants... I'm really a person who enjoys life wherever I may be.
Having just arrived, last week, I an at an economical motel and the air condish is sub-marginal... hence deck door open, no screen, mosquitos.
Thanks for the note about drinkers... On the bus tour the other day the hostess pointed out the MOB scene at a couple cabana bars. My prime vehicle is a motorcycle and I worry. My only incident was when a golf car rocketed past me at an exit and the cross gate came down on my windshield. My ankle should be OK in time for dancing Wednesday at Spanish Springs.
I am away on photo venture this weekend.
Please enjoy my humor!
Jeff

So... you planning on staying long? barf.
I originally was only driving my 19 y.o. daughter with her horse to an eventing farm in Ocala... Was going to spend the winter touring the state and doing photography. Then I saw something on CraigsList and now I have a job! I do enjoy staying occupied.
That and a dance floor will keep me smiling.
Happy Weekend!

Just so you know... we take ourselves with humor back home. My house is in Schuylkill County, PA. Coal cracker country. We are called "crackers" and the county nickname is "Skook." You will see some of our self analyzing thoughts on FB at YOU KNOW YOU'RE A SKOOK WHEN..." https://www.facebook.com/srpoland1957#!/groups/259335167409820/?fref=ts
We added double yellow lines to one lane roads to create two lane roads. We have more trees than people. Opening day of trout and dear seasons are school holidays. My town has one store. You can buy bait, ammo, bread and used cars. We have a gas station and a church. Beer is 4 miles away and no restaurants. 36 unit windmill farm. and lots of corn. If you get up that way you can use my house. Keys are under the mat.

The written word lacks the subtlies of face to face communications. I solved some of those problems by always adding a ;) so people didn't take offense at what I meant as funny.
I think you will soon get used to the flat landscape and we hope you soon love it here so much that you get all protective of your new home town like many of us are.

Someone help me...can't remember it....maybe the Villages daily photo...hmmmm not sure. Remember not everyone will get your sense of humor and may become offended... just keep your happy go lucky attitude and don't let it bother you.

Hi Jeff,
I read your post, did not understand if you were trying to get reasons to like the area (TV) or, convince us otherwise…. then I kept on reading and realize you enjoy photography.
Well, me too. I don't visit the Villages as often as I would like to (yet), but invite you to browse a few pictures I posted on a face book small page.
But, mosquitos? Not really. I am from Brazil, visited areas such as the Amazon, travelled to Central America and Africa and, next to these areas, TV has virtually and literally no mosquitos -- or they are manageable. Hope you will enjoy TV, return often and take nice pictures of so many nice place that only a "good eye" can capture!
Best,
