We own a home in The Villages but have a home to sell in Ohio. My husband is planning on retiring in January of next year, so after four years we will finally be heading down for good. We are dreaming of The Villages but enjoying things you only find up north....
I am trying to make it through the winter by enjoying some of the things I believe I will miss....
Jungle Jims

Skyline
Birds and Trees of the north

Gray days....only kidding...

I moved down here from Chicago almost 4 years ago and I get very homesick at times, especially Christmas. What I miss:

Family!
Snowfall at Christmas..it just isn't Christmas down here with Santa hats on plastic flamingos!
Chicago culture-museums, Art Institute, Shedd Aquarium
Wrigley Field home games, Soldier Field Bear's games
NORMAL trees...Birch, towering pines, fall colors..palm trees to me are a waste. They remind me of chimney sweepers.
Chicago skyline
Planting a garden with a wide variety of plants and flowers. It's SO limited down here!
Midwest Farmer's Markets! The variety of veggies and fruits were amazing up there. Here, the apples are the size of golf balls and don't even get me started on tomatoes!

Living in New England the changing seasons are what are missed the most. Mountains, skiing, and lakes you can swim in. I suppose you can swim in lakes in Florida, but you have to worry about bacteria levels.
The snow is something everyone seems to move to Florida to get away from, but the first thing you miss around December. Missing where you come from is only natural, because it is a part of you!

Meats from Harr's Surf and Turf in Palm Harbor.
Trips to Tarpon Spring's Library's great selection of DVDs and Tarpon Springs various beaches.
Honeymoon Island park and walks on its beaches.
Very close AMC movie theater in Oldsmar which had 20 screens and two very large movie theaters.
Swimming in pool we had to Palm Harbor. Deep enough to jump in carefully at one end.

To start off with - the usual - the food ! Not trying to start anything here but it is just different. But that's okay - I elected to move here so . . .

Family, friends, Manhattan (although I didn't go THAT much) and just the "way of life" on Long Island. Again - not better or worse just used to 55 years up there and only 7 down here in South Florida - not yet in TV.

Home and life are what (where) you make it !!!!

Nothing and I'm not there yet!!!!!

Maybe a good Portugese restaurant that serves Marascada and Paella in large portions.

What I miss is sitting on a patio outside at a restaurant and feeling a soft breeze having a beer and watching the Yankees play Tampa on the television.

Oh wait.... you were talking about not being in TV. :D

Surf, friends, beach, music, ocean, multiple micro brewery's, surf, people that gladly yield to bikers, joggers, skaters and walkers because they are also one or all of them as well and understand that slowing down & yielding IS NO BIG DEAL!, walking my dog on the beach unleashed for miles and miles, surf, Cuban & Tex Mex food, a "beach" attitude ..... did I mention surf?

That's funny, just comparing our opinions on landscapes & gardens. We're still in Alabama, and I can't wait to move to TV so I can grow MORE things that I can't here. But I like palms & tropicals & you obviously don't, so therein lies the difference.

When we do retire & move I know I'll miss a lot of the people I work with, some for over twenty years, and I know I'll long for some of our favorite locally owned restaurants. I'm sure there are a few Crimson Tide fans in TV, so I'll have to search them out so I can continue to discuss Bama football. Roll Tide!!

But I WON'T miss the thousands of tobacco chewin rednecks that spit & throw down their used-up wads of tobaccy wherever they please. During our recent LSV I never saw any of that nasty habit going on in TV.

I miss my cousins and since we came from a small town, that included a lot of the town....the joke that people from a bigger city told was that those of us who were born and raised there were either related to or had somebody married into the family!

Not too far off the mark either....my mom still has people she went to high school with and she knows all their kids.

We are here 7 months. Moved from Staten Island, originally Brooklyn. Miss real bagels on every corner. Miss real diners with real food. Hate chain food restaurants. Miss our family, of course. Do not miss snow, work, traffic, crowds, high car insurance, enormous electric bills. I do miss our doctors who knew us. Thats about it. Nothing that is that important, except my mom.

First, I love it here in TV and am happy we're here. That said...

I miss Pittsburgh's fantastic restaurants, the Strip District's many food markets and stores, the skyline, being able to leave the apartment and walk two blocks to a Pirate's game (I know, I know, they don't win all that much but still...) watching people stream past our balcony on their way to Steelers games, staring at the Allegheny River from any room in the place, and the sense of ownership you have when you've grown up in a place and it feels like home forever.

The things I miss in MI we fortunately get back in the summertime.

When we go back in the summer I miss a lot of things in TV.

I also am from Ohio. I moved out in 1977. The ONLY thing I miss about Ohio is the Stevenson's Double Cheeseburger. Stevenson's is in Euclid, Ohio on Lakeshore Blvd. It is truly a dive. The building slopes towards the lake. I'm 5'10" and I have to "duck dawn" to clear my head walking into the Men's Room. This Dump was voted Best Burger in Cleveland. If your ever in that area, Please visit this Establidshment. You will not be disappointed.:mmmm:

I miss watching the beautiful Pacific Ocean waves crashing on the rocks and seeing the mountains around the Los Angeles basin at the same time and having the beautiful and magestic jet planes flying overhead coming out of LAX and 75 degree weather almost everyday.

But...... look what I traded it in for.... dancing every night, friends galore and a beautifully safe community to live in. I can always go back and visit.

You can take the girl out of Ohio, but you can't take Ohio out of the girl....

I miss the kind of general attitude of warmth and acceptance and reliablility from folks who have known you for a LONG time. The farmlands and well kept barns and homes. The work ethic and independence of "Ahia" people.

We all love the place of our birth.

I haven't moved from PA to TV yet, BUT I did move from my forever home at the Jersey Shore to where I live in PA now almost 10 years ago. I miss my old friends and my family and the bread and food from back home. I miss knowing where ALL the roads go so I don't get confused when I see a detour sign. Having said that, when I retire and move down full time into my now rented out home in a couple of years, I will MISS NOTHING from my PA town. Nothing. Can't wait to move down. I have never been a PA girl but TV already feels like home. Bring it on. It's all I can think of in my daydreams since we bought our house.

I am leaving NYC in just a few more months to settle down in TV. Everything is becoming more poignant now as I begin to say my goodbyes. In addition to all the people, I am sure that I will miss the one block walk to the always wonderful Central Park, the easy access to every ethnic cuisine, many of them delivered to my apartment door within a few minutes; outdoor cafes; sunsets over the Hudson River; a museum for every mood; walking home after a Broadway Show or a concert at the Beacon; weekends on the Jersey Shore and so much more. Yet after 25 years of living in the same place, I am happy to make TV my next life adventure!

It is very hard to leave your home place for another state, especially for another part of the country with different traditions than from where you grew up. we had to move to NJ for three years in the '80s from Pittsburgh. I was devastated and fund it very difficult to assimilate into the East Coast/Jersey way of life. I did my best, made friends, but was glad to get back away from the East Coast to where I was more comfortable.

Still, I wouldn't blast someone else's state so vehemently as you did on a forum like this ("I will MISS NOTHING from my PA town. Nothing."), where people come from all over. Everywhere is somebody's treasured home. I'm just sayin...

Bagels on every corner. Deli's galore. My sister and her family, my mom. My son and granddaughter. Not my job, or the traffic. Not the noise and the confusion. Not the crowded malls. I love my new home and my new neighbors. I love my lanai, the stores, restaurants and especially the pool. Cannot put it all on a scale but I think all my new loves outweigh this missing.

I miss:

...my daughter, son in law, and 2 grandsons

...owning a speed boat and pontoon boat and living on a chain of 7 lakes that we could boat and swim on/in without fear of alligators and polluted waters. Enjoying the slow ride down the river in between lakes and watching the turtles sunning themselves on rocks and listening to the birds chirping in the trees...very relaxing and therapeutic.

...our house that we built in 1987, a replica of a 1940's farmhouse with a huge wraparound porch. The porch was 56 x 8 on one side and 24 x 8 on the other and had a wood swing and a lot of porch furniture ready for visitors to come join us. I used to sit on that swing and read for hours. I'd also talk to the neighbors as they walked by. The porch furniture could write a book...a lot of good neighbor experiences were shared there.

...Zukey Lake Tavern: Not the best food but a landmark and a great place to pull the pontoon up to, dock it, get out and go inside to eat...wearing swimsuit and all...lol....what fun!

...Hell, Michigan...just because of it's name. Yes, it's a real place and I lived there for a year.

What do I miss most - from Saint Louis, Missouri, especially that part of the city known as the Central West End - where I lived for the better part of 42 years?

Quite simply: fall colors and spring bulbs such as daffodils, jonquils and tulips, as well as the beautiful yellow of the blossoming forsythia, or the wonderfully pink blossoms of the redbud tree!" Or, the fascinating white blossoms of the dogwood tree which had a dominate position in my front yard

Yes, my "Drake Elm" here in Florida loses its leaves every fall, but since it is now mid-January, and there are many leaves still attached to the tree, that doesn't seem to be terribly important! But, from experience, I know that the tree will return to a full Spring attitude within a few weeks!

Of course, I do NOT miss the snow, the sleet, the chilly shoveling days, nor those days when many businesses closed, because it was too cold or too snowy or too "unfriendly!"
