Does anyone know how many people can sit in the Savannah Center theater?

I don't know, but I recently received the day trip schedule from AAA and everyone of their trips to big name entertainment are sold out. So I'm thinking a good venue, bringing in really good entertainment might really work here. Now people are saying the ticket price for Willy Nelson are too high. Some have mentioned the venue, and others are saying Villagers won't pay that high price. Don't know which is accurate.

Bill :)I checked what the districtgov site indicated using the Savannah Center Seating Chart that I have, and apparantly the figure indicated on the site is slightly inaccurate. Here are the actual figures broken down by section:

Winston, a copy of the chart I have should be available at the box office. That's where mine came from.

(With the chart being dated 3/4/09, the numbers are subject to any remodeling that might have taken place since I received the chart about a year ago)

p.s. If anyone is interested, the Church on the Square has an estimated seating capacity of 681 including 10 accessable spots.

Bogie, my good friend, this is HIGH SEASON, a performing arts center has to support itself all year.

Most of us wish for a performing arts center, but it has to be able to pay the high prices for really good performers and we Villagers are thrifty souls for the most part. In times of down economy, performing arts centers struggle everywhere especially when tickets are over a hundred bucks for performances.

I don't think anyone mentioned performing arts centers. I just leapt to conclusions that THAT is where this discussion is going.

No wonder why we can't get any good performers here. I thought The Westbury Music Fair on Long Island at 5000 seats was too small. I know it ain't gonna happen, but I wish the Morse's would consider a larger hall or at least an outdoor place that would hold ten of thousands of people for a concert. Just think...we can have our own Woodstock.

We have one already, the polo fields. One year it was set up for the college all-star football game. Woodstock in golf carts, tripped out grey heads, there's a scarey thought.:22yikes:

A state of the art performing arts center is way overdue for TV. There is a group that has been working on it for years---PALMS! Performing arts lake Marion Sumter. Anybody want to donate a few million?

an 850-ish seat capacity certainly cannot be very attractive venue for many performing artists/attractions.

since we have strayed of topic I will as well.

Performing arts centers like any and all public funding based facilities that sit most of the time unoccupied (very low utilization per $$$ invested) are very difficult to financially justify.

There is usually a very high ongoing daily maintenance/operating expense required whether there is a performance or not.

I also believe the demographics of TV alone cannot not support the ongoing break even ++ of such a facility, therefore would of neccessity need to be outside TV and closer to another population with a more varied age demographic.....my opinion.

As I think about a large star of the art performance center, like so many other issues it becomes more and more complex.

First of all the list of entertainers that would be welcome in the Villages is pretty limited. Taylor Swift, Justin Beiber and Niki Minaj are not going to come here.

Tickets for the big time legends like Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton and the Eagles usually start at $125 and go up from there. Some people say Villagers won't pay those prices. I'm not sure. But I do know that it will be more difficult to get 10,000 people to cone up that kind of money that it is to get 850.

The there is the ticket selling. I think that if you need to sell 10,000 tickets you might need to get Ticketmaster involved and there there are fees involved with that. Then what usually happens for top tier acts is that smaller ticket agencies by up most of the tickets and up the prices, often to double or triple the face value. I once paid $800 to see Paul McCartney from the 11th row. Can't afford that anymore.

So you would have this 10,000 seat venue with a limited number of acts that you could book into it at very high prices. It would be different in a community of a million people with diverse ages and backgrounds. You might book Eric Clapton on one night and Lil' Wayne the next. You could get 10,000 people, but you would see very many of the same people there on those two nights.

We seem to be getting tribute bands in at the Savannah Center. I include the Lovin' Spoonful (no Sebastian or Zallie) and Jay and the Americans (no Jay Black) in that list.
There are acts that can play an 850 seat venue, if they do two shows. Herman's Hermits Starring Peter Noone put on a great (sell out) show for four years in a row. We had a good house for Gary Lewis and the Playboys, The Association (who were bad beyound belief), and an embarrasing house for Felix Cavileri's Rascals. Hey, he is in the RR Hall of Fame!
I am just saying that this venue can work for the right acts.

Sold out has more to do with the popularity of the entertainer than anything else. Beside which we are in prime time season with 90,000 population + renters guests etc and approx 850 seats. :cryin2:

There are many people here that wouldn't pay to see any celebrity

Pushing for a Performing Arts Center will end up the same way he does in many cities --empty most of the time
