Supposedly on jan 27 merchants can charge a fee for the customer using a credit card. My two home states NY and Fl do not allow it-- but others do.
Here is a link: Credit Card Users Brace for Possible (http://www.foxbusiness.com/industries/2013/01/28/credit-card-users-brace-for-possible-checkout-fee/)

Lots of merchants are not charging it though,
Thought you would like to know

Thanks for the post.
According to the article, in 10 states including Florida, they cannot charge this fee, so we are good ( for now at least) . It also can't be applied if you are using Visa or Mastercard, so again most people are OK.

I'm good to go. No surcharges allowed in CT, NY and FL.

That's a confusing article. It says this action is a result of settling a suit against Mastercard and Visa. BUT, it also says both those companies bar stores from adding a fee if using their cards??? How can this be a settlement against them, if it doesn't affect them. I am rather confused. I'm also relieved to see Kansas is one of the 10 states that ban the practice.

Visa and MasterCard barred merchants from adding a checkout fee prior the settlement. They do not prohibit the fee now except as noted in those ten states according to an article published at foxnews. com.

Thanks for the clarification. I misread that part. But, all is well, since it's banned in Florida.

Businesses which accept credit cards have had to pay the surcharge to the credit card companies for years. They have already added that cost into the products or services they sell.

I do know that when we were living in MD virtually all of the gas stations charged somewhere between 3-7 cents more per gallon if you used a credit card. If you used the company's branded card Shell, Mobil, BP, etc it was the same as cash. However if you wanted to use your Visa, MC, AmEx or Discover you'd pay more for your gas.
