This is two years old, but I thought it would encourage "lively" discussion.

I would have thought Florida to be #1 when you consider most of the top 20's are here anyway!

Same here. I am Iowa and number 47.
I notice that people from heavy populations tend to be more aggressive period. When the population is dense, you generally don't get recognized and therefore there is little accountability. I come from rural Iowa where if you do something stupid in your car or otherwise, you are probably known and can easily be held accountable for you stupidity.

You know why Minnesota is ranked 48th.....Because of Minnesota Nice. Why people are so nice in Minnesota that the state won't allow four way stops because all you would get from four drivers is "No, please you go first"

Being a transplanted New Yawker, I disagree with the report because we have to dodge sooooooooo many cars a day. :jester:
I agree that N.Y is the worst as we have too many aggressive drivers.
CT is eighteeth but it must be a typo. I have seen too many cars pass me doing eighty or ninety where seventy is more than enough for the type of roads we have. The Merritt Parkway is very curvy and does lend itself to those types of speeds. Beside, your only going to wind up behind someone doing seventy. If you do the speed limit, it could be dangerous as you will find people cutting you off to save a minute or two.
Today, it is going to snow only half an inch. It's the worst type of snowfall as most people will drive like there is no snow on the ground and it could lead to dangerous conditions.
I will be on the lookout and drive defensively. Be careful out there.

In New England we tend to vote for Massachusetts (especially if you live in one of the other states)

Just last week I was run off the road (Hwy.441) by a woman driving a window-van. We were approaching a trafic light and I was passing her on her left. As soon as I got in her "blind-spot", she decided to change lanes and started to move into my lane. I had no choice but to partly drive into the median (bumpy grass). I had two wheels in the grass and two wheels on the pavement. I blew my horn and she moved back into her lane.
There are a lot of elderly drivers in Florida and we don't know how many of them are in the early stage of dementia. She just didn't think to check her blind spot!

I'm from Boston and have driven in the downtown area. I've also driven in Manhattan and every state on the east coast and a few others.
I will tell you that without a doubt all of the drivers in the country a way. way ahead of the drivers in Manila, Philippines. It is simply impossible to explain it. You just cannot believe what you are witnessing.
I haven't driven in China, but took a bus in Beijing and it's pretty close to Manila.
Believe me, Americans in every state know how to drive.

Florida is number 11. My son says Florida drivers are the worst as he has witnessed things that are unbelieveable. Many unexpected moves by drivers.
I drove in Florida several times with no problems. I will reserve judgement until I move down.

The test is on knowledge of traffic rules, not on driving behavior. There are jerks everywhere, whether they know the rules or not.

I wouldn't make too much out of Kansas being number one. We just drove half way across the state today...and saw 4 cars. It was a particularly busy day.

I've lived or worked in a lot of different places and while I don't disagree with this survey, at least I knew what to expect driving in places like New York and New Jersey. The worst situation is not knowing what people are going to do and that's where driving in the midwest is most excrutiating. You end up with a combination of courteous and aggressive drivers and never know how to react.
The best drivers in the world? Germany. They follow the rules there and everybody knows it.

So, THEY are the ones stopping in the middle of the traffic circles and stopping in the middle of the street to allow a golf cart to cross!!!

I saw someone just yesterday on 441 at the light in front of Walmart start to make a U turn, change their mind half way through it and BACK UP all the way into the straight lane with the light green!! I sat there and held my breath waiting for the crash. I believe they had an Ohio plate.

Very true. That's a pretty stupid way to judge the quality of the drivers. When I got my FL license I just had to turn in my old license. I didn't even have to study the Florida road rules. Also new rule shave been implemented since I took the written test 45 years ago. I might not even pass it today.

Hmmm.
I wonder if we should tell our grandchildren that...the ones learning to drive. Knowing the laws and rules of the road is stupid? It doesn't make you a good driver to know the rules and laws but it is a good way to start.
Maybe that is why some drivers consider a stop sign, a suggestion? ;)

Another negative old thread resurrected for what reason? Everyone knows that The Villages has the worst drivers. That includes golf carts, cars, bicycles, motor cycles, scooters, hoverounds, and golfers.

Of course Gracie, what are the two leading state represented in TV? I'll give you a hint, they both start with New....
Explains a lot, eh? And before you flame me, remember I'm in Kansas, and I'm number 1! :a20:

It is very sad when elders with early dementia still have their car keys.
I remember back in the 1960's when my father and mother were taking my brother to his Navy training center (from N.J.) and my dad was going around the "circles" (what you guys call roundabouts) the WRONG WAY.
When they returned home..........God only knows he must have had a guardian angel.........the doctor made sure his car keys were taken away.
When my father was in an early stage of dememtia (undiagnosed) he would occasionally drive on the wrong side of a divided 4 lane highway. I wasn't there when he did it but my mother told me about it. She would tell him he was on the wrong side and wondered why he did it.
In early dememtia, a person might only do something like that once a month and the rest of the time they are fine. So no one even knows that the keys should be taken away.
I'm happy to say the first time I suggested he give up his license he agreed to it right away with no argument. He just agreed to it and we mailed his license to the Florida Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. To our surprise, we got a really nice letter back thanking us for doing what we did.

True story. When I applied for my license in CA, I took the written exam and went to the next window. The person there noted my Mass license and asked how many tickets I got in my dozen years there. I told him I had none. He said I didn't need a road test and gave me my license. Maybe it was the policy then and he was pulling my leg, but I like to believe it was escaping MA without a ticket. :a20:

Some would say they move to TV so they can drive a golf cart! Just half way kidding! My father-in-law drove until he was 91 and was a good driver. It all depends on the individual. Really, stats show that those under 25 are the most reckless and that's why you pay more for insurance at that age. Remember when your kids turned 16 and started driving how your insurance went out of sight. Being from Illinois, we have our Metro Chicago area and other Large populated ones have their traffic. Like another post mentioned---you can drive in Kansas and other western states and hardly see any cars at all. Interesting survey but like many---proves very little. :crap2:

I didn't say that. You twisted my words. I said that knowledge of the rules of the road is a stupid way to judge how good drivers are. Knowing the rules and obeying them are two different things. Knowing the rules does not necessarily make for good drivers.

When I moved to the Philippines, I kept my Massachusetts license. They allowed me to keep it even after I got a Philippines license with no written test or road test.
When I moved to Florida I took my Mass license to the DMV, paid a fee and they gave me a Florida license without a road test or a written test.
