So I hear the Pope is retiring... I hear he is buying a place in TV. You may soon see his pope-mobile cruising down the cart paths on his way to LSL for a little line dancing. I wonder if anyone would dare move HIS seat saver!

Well, my guess is that he would do what his boss would do and not save a seat.
EDITED and ADDED...omigosh you aren't kidding, he IS stepping down on February 28th, the first pontiff to do so since the early 1400's.

We are in Rome, and everyone is going crazy. Unfortunately, the US Embassy to the Vatican is closed for a Vatican holiday (Anniversary of the Lateran Treaty), so I can't reach anyone for an insider's scoop.

I thought the pope couldn't retire until they passed away. I thought they were electing younger pope's somewhat so they wouldn't have to do it too often.
But then, what do I know?????/

I'm not as curious at to why they elect elderly people as I am over the fact that they stay in office until they die. The last couple of Popes were well past the being able to perform the duties of the office.
This guy is the first one in 500 years that is doing the right thing.
It doesn't bother me one way or the other. I gave up on the Catholic religion a long time ago. But I am very curious about why these guys stay there well beyond the point that they are able to function.

Same could be said of some of the older US Senators and Congressmen as well as some Presidents. They probably love the power and prestige of the position involved.

I wonder if they have job-performance reviews? This guy seems to have set the church back a hundred years--JMO. But then, it seemed like they specifically went for that when choosing him. As if they were afraid the church had become to modernized.

You are right. It looks like he has not changed his views over his career all that much.
Wonder what the new Pope's philosophy will look like?

Oh, come on Gracie, you'd make a great pope AND you'd look sharp in red shoes.
Serious, I'm not a religious person, but I have to admire the man for doing the right thing. I've never seen the point of dying in office. And to many people this is a very important office, indeed. Too important to be run by a shadow group propping up someone who simply can no longer function. And his statement made it clear it was not just his body that was failing.

Time to get Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the current Archbishop of New York, the position of Pope. That would be a first and the best person for the job.

Well said. That's the point I was trying to make. They need to elect younger Popes...but then the Catholic Church is afraid of change and a younger guy will bring in too many new ideas and ways of thinking.
I, too, gave up on the Catholic religion almost 35 years ago.

I am Christian but not a Catholic Christian. I agree 100% that too many stay in a position too long and beyond their ability to function adequately and effectively. This not only happens to Popes but also many others. Electing a new Pope is serious business. I wish them well.

The Pope is the sucessor of St. Peter. It is a lifetime job. This resignation is going to set a very bad precedent. I can only hope and pray the The Holy Spirit will cause the College of Cardinals to pick a new Pope more Conservative and Traditional.

He appropriately admitted he is human with human limitations.
It's always good to admit we have human frailties and we're not God.
I respect him hugely for stepping down so the ministry can be carried out fully, by someone in good health with stamina.

this Holy Father has laid the groundwork for his successor by appointing 22 conservative cardinals in the last couple of years, many americans among them...i pray for an american pope so that perhaps the same phenomena which happened in poland when john paul II went there will happen in our country by the grace of God.

My understanding is that He did not want to accent the nomimination in the first place, He was set to retire to Bavaria and fish with his brother. His brother was worried that this would be too much for him. I respect his decision to put the good of the Church and his own good ahead of everything else. I pray that we will elect a good and holy Pope. I think this will serve as a lesson that granting Papacy on a person to honor them is not necessarily a good thing.

POWER as in saying mass; the only women you see in the Vatican are the nuns who do the menial tasks for the priests. I was raised in the catholic church and spent some time in the convent. See the documentary Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence and weep for the travesty committed against children and is still being covered up; you will then understand why this pope had to resign.

I would agree with Salybow that Benedict never wanted to be Pope in the first place. His personality is more suited to being a writer or some type of academic. His lack of administrative skills is quite evident in the way he bungled and mis-handled a number of hot button issues facing the Church today. I'm sure he was stunned at the harsh criticism he received from many quarters. He certainly is stressed out. You can see it in his face. This certainly played a large role in his decision to resign.

Papst Benedikt wanted to retire and return home to Bayern long before his Election to the Papacy, aber Papst Johanes Paulus II sagt nein.
Have respect for the Faith. Women can not be Deacons or Priests, they are sacristans, Dtors of the Liturgy, Pastoral Administrators and Extraordinary Ministsters of Holy Communion. They have all positions of power but Priest and Deacon.
And why denegrate the holy Sisters who teach in our schools, tend the sick in our hospitals, and care for the elderly in Nursing homes, to name just a bit.
I am worried that Papst Benedikt abdication will set a presedent. But, if you read St. Malachy's prediction the next Pope will be Peter the Roman who will lead the force of good at the end of the world.

This might provide good material for a fictional movie based on the "early" unexpected retirement of a Pope. He comes to The Villages, learns to line dance and makes a bucket list for many other adventures. Perhaps he might even join the single's club and start dating.
