Has anyone been to the DeLeon Springs Sugar Mill?

We have friends here from Illinois, and we are thinking of driving over to the DeLeon Springs Sugar Mill to make our own pancakes. Has anyone else done it? How was it?

I've done it with others, and it is a lot of fun! There is more to the park than just the old sugar mill now restaurant. It's a beautiful setting, at times of the year there are boat tours, there's a swimming facility built around an underground aquifer, there's a small museum of the history of the place. My only suggestion--and this is a must--don't go on a weekend!

We have taken visitors twice, it's a great half day out. I think you can make a reservation and I would definitely try that, because it is very very busy in season. It's cafeteria style - tables with hot plates in the center to cook the pancakes and they supply everything, it's really fun. The spring itself is 75 degrees year round and people swim in it all year. They also have very clean bathroom facilities. Plenty of benches to sit and people watch.

Like any good place to eat there is a bit of a wait but not excessive and well worth it.

You can do the pancakes and your own eggs and bacon and just a lot of fun and the food is good too.

We have done it several times...never disappointed...never that long a wait....and visitors love it.

I have not been in years but it was always a lot of fun and everyone enjoyed the uniqueness of cooking on the grill in the middle of the table. The building the restaurant is in was actually a working mill powered by the spring many years ago. Dif worth a trip outta The Bubble to show some visitors a bit of old Florida.

While the water in the spring is more like 72 degrees ...... due to the amount of water flow coming out of one of the bigger spring openings I know of ...... it feels COLD!!

May I also suggest above. Dunnellon is a great little town, antique shops and good food.

The tour is fun and interesting.

I don't think I am "getting" this, you go to a restaurant and cook your own breakfast? You wait on line to do this?

Years ago the Paradise Island Resort Casino had a restaurant where you cook your own steak, I didn't "get" that one either.

It's a wonderful place to go! Making your own pancakes is great, but there are other breakfast options you can choose. The springs are wonderful and warm...always. The trails, picnic area, all fabulous. Also, if you have a chance to ride on the boat that goes around the lake, there are some wonderful sites to see...if the water is high enough. Have been there many times by ourselves and we always schlepp visitors there, and everyone loves it!

thanks for all your responses. I called, they do reservations for groups of 10 or more. I already have 9 people on my list......We'll find 2 more so we can do reservations. Especially since Patrick will go with us and he is in a wheelchair, I felt the reserved time was important. We are also planning to do the Eco tour on the pontoon boat. Fun!

Went with a "Pancakes and Puppies" group on a bus a couple of weeks ago, which included breakfast at the Sugar Mill and on to the dog track in Daytona. We really enjoyed the breakfast - lots of fun making your own pancakes at the big table and the whole breakfast was delicious, including the coffee. Then you can walk around the springs where some people are out for an early morning swim. Be sure and check out the little museum of Florida history on the far side of the lake...very, very interesting about Fla. indians and history of the area. I googled DeLeon Springs State Park before we went on the trip, and apparently there can be a 45 min. or longer wait to get in for breakfast on the weekends, so I wouldn't necessarily go then.
