I may be in the minority but I love the little lizards (anoles?). I haven't seen many, are they seasonal?

We had the same thing happen in both of our new homes. The folks preparing the land to build a new home take it down to " bare earth" and destroy the natural habitat and hiding places for geckos...actually anoles.
But they come back. We now have them regularly on our front porch trying to sell us insurance....but not so much when it is colder.

They are here in Largo in abundance but they get so slow in the cold weather that you almost step on them before they can slither out of the way!:crap2:

I look out my front window and if I see my lizards on my front porch,
I know it's warm enough out for me :MOJE_whot:
You ain't lived until you've chased a lizard around your house for hours trying to get it outside :) If you can't get it out you must sleep with your mouth closed until you catch it.:)

I think they get more active when it is warmer outside. I love the way they come up to the sliding glass door and look in at my cat. They seem to know what they are doing. She chatters away at them.

We have lots of them right now. Some people say if you do not see them, then the snakes are there and eating them.

Do U mean Jim Morrison "the Lizard King"?
The mythical Lizard King, Morrison's alter ego, appeared first in the best-selling record Waiting for the Sun (1968) in a poem that was printed inside the record jacked. It was entitled 'The Celebration of the Lizard King'. Part of the lyrics were used in 'Not to Touch the Earth' and the complete 'Celebration' appeared on record Absolutely Live (1970).
Enough triva, it's a bit cold for these wonderful creatures.

They will be back Trish! Our neighborhood was brand new last year and we did not see the little buggers for a few months after we moved in! Now there is an abundance of the critters! I like them too!

Saw a German shorthair point at one the other day -- full stance until his master released him. The two had a staredown -- dog on ground, anole on leaf, almost eye to eye. Was so funny!

Those people are right! Snakes don't really like to be around people but you don't have to be gone long and they will come around. They do have to eat though.

I am sorry but when it comes to gecko/anoles I have no sense of humor. I have a gecko catcher, actually a gold fish net and do battle with these little pests on my lanai and bird cage. The problem with catch and release is that they head right back to the lanai and bird cage. I also have a squirrel, a rat with a fury tail that climbs all over my bird cage and lanai and that's getting on my nerves. I listening to see if this frequent visitor has nested in my attic but so far it appears not.
I once worked with a woman who found a little mouse in her storage shed so what did she do. she started feeding this little critter because she thought it so cute. You guessed the outcome. I obviously do not bond well with any of God's critters. Its a flaw I know I know

I love the little lizards. When it's cold, they will go under the mulch or go hide somewhere. They don't do cold.
Haven't had too many lately. Weather has been too cold for them. There is one that regularly looks in the slider near the breakfast eating area. Have another who has staked out one particular chair on my lanai. He/she is a little p.o.'d right now because my sister is visiting and is sitting in the chair.
As for squirrels, well, I've got a furry tailed rodent who also thinks my cage is his private access route to my roof and then HIS palm trees...;). Last year he and his "wife" had a litter of little ones. I was away when they were learning to navigate fence walking....my neighbors told us about the fence bit....they said it was adorable. Guess they all grew and left the nest, thank goodness. One squirrel stomping across my roof is noisy enough....:D

Not my field, but I did sleep in a Holiday Inn express last night. We have two similar animals.
The Carolina anole is a color changer.
Carolina anole - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolina_anole)
He will either be green or brown. Although sometimes called an American Chameleon because of the ability to change color, he is not a chameleon. The skin is uniform color without distinct patches. He often is positioned head down and tail up
The always brown lizard I think is a Brown anole.
Brown anole - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_Anole)
Anolis sagrei (http://www.sms.si.edu/irlspec/anolis_sagrei.htm)
He is always brownish and does not color change. The skin on the back and sides will have little lighter spots or lines. The female often has a light stripe on its back running head to tail.
Neither is a gecko. I may be totally wrong and welcome correction from anyone

We recently had one of those cute little guys living in our lanai - couldn't catch him!! Everytime we saw him we attempted to guide him out the door, but he insisted on going under the threshhold. Don't know what he was eating / drinking, but he survived there for over 3 weeks. We finally got smart - one day when we noticed him on the window, we plugged up the ends of the threshhold so he couldn't get back under and at last he found the door. The birds in our area LOVE them for lunch. I really don't mind them, but I haven't had to deal with one in the house, yet.

Lots around in our yard playing Hide and Seek with our dogs.
We have had generations of those personable:gc::gc: little darlings on our lanai for the past 9 years, and they suddenly disappeared last month when we had our lanai and patio floors painted. Maybe they can't blend into the gray-and-white speckled theme?

Those little anoles, all colors, sizes, and personalities, lived on our lanai for 9 years but when we had the lanai/patio painted (grey/white speckles) they suddenly left. Everybody's a critic - maybe they couldn't blend in with the color scheme? Anyway, we hope they come back.

I can't wait to see if my 2 pooches notice them. They have a love hate relationship with their Michign squirrels, wood chucks, and deer. They love to run after them but these creatures seem to know just where the Invisible Fence line is located and the deer stay just on the other side.

Please be careful. I had a friend up north who lost TWO dogs that ran past the invisible fence because they found the deer irresistible. She never found them.

We had so many deer in our MI condo complex (herd of 27) that our dog became inured to them, and them to him. Rabbits and chipmunks and squirrels, however were a different matter.
So when we came to TV, I was afraid for the anoles. So far he's ignored them, and the frogs we see in the middle of the street at night just stir his interest--just wants to sniff at them. I guess he's not a snacker.
We had no little geckos when we first moved in, but after time they've returned.

We have a few of the little fellows running around. They seemed to have use to me being outside the garage. One of them is missing part of it's tail so I don't know what the story is with that.

Trish. In both new homes it took about a year before the Anoles/geckos/ started returning to the area where the earth had been cleared for building.
I bought a good insurance policy from one on my front porch yesterday ;)
But where is Flo?:pepper2:

That's funny. We ought to get avatars and screen names for our dogs and start a post from the dogs' point of view. First post could be Don's dog owning up to de-tailing a gecko!

Our mom is such a loser, she keeps rescuing the geckgoes by throwing a teatowel over them and removing them from the birdcage. But the geckgoes just come back in the birdcage. We know all their hiding places. They make tasty snacks. When Mom's back is turned, we hunt them, so much fun.

Well I got tired of hunting down anoles on my lanai/birdcage and so I put up a sign that said ""Do Not Enter Private Property. Since then I haven't found one .
SunKool came out because my A/C continued to shut down. What the repair
guy found was that an anole climbed into the outside A/C drain plugging it and causing the A/C to shut down. I also had to clean out an anole that decide to use the spray nozzle as his hang out. both situations nasty nasty

I wish MY mom would put some in the birdcage so they would eat the BIRD, who thinks he's TOP PET around here just coz he's older.
Oh wait... You mean that other kind of birdcage.
Sigh.

They spend most of their lives running from snakes.
But they are very important because they eat tons of bugs.
And yes, they are seasonal. You'll see a few around in the winter but not many.

I use a small dry dish towel but I guess a wet one would be easier to control.

In the winter they go to the islands. They go on little tiny rafts made from palm leaves. Four of them to a raft. Cutest thing you've ever seen.

I have noticed a large number of lizards (anoles) this year - seems to be a bumper crop.
In the past week or so, there have been quite a few baby ones (less than 1 inch long) as well as the usual ones that hang around my Florida room (on the outside, of course). Some of the large ones are around 7 inches including the tail.
Always fun to watch them in their courting ritual of bouncing up and down push-up style and having the dewlap fold in and out.

We have lots of them here in Tall Trees. Hector and Harriet live in our birdcage. We have breakfast and dinner with them every night
