View Full Version : Vic's Embers - Finally

Well, finally made it to Vic's Embers Saturday night. On a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the best, I would rate the service 5+. The queen cut and blackened prime rib, I would rate a 4. The vegetable choices were corn or stewed tomatoes. Stewed tomatoes? Very strange. Not a corn lover, I chose the stewed tomatoes. I would rate them a -1. They came in a separate little dish and looked like pureed tomatoes with a crouton in the middle. I tasted it and it was sweet. I asked the waitress "what is that?" She said SWEET stewed tomatoes. She didn't use the word sweet originally. With all the vegetables in the world to offer, sweet stewed tomatoes, really? Other couple had chateaubriand (beautiful piece of meat), Asian mixed vegetables & fancy whipped potatoes. (That will definitely be my choice next time). Personally, I think my meal was about $4-$5 overpriced. However, show your POA membership card, and you get either an after dinner drink or a little dessert in a shot glass. Very nice. I would go back; probably next year, no sooner.

I LOVE sweet stewed tomatoes.

I LOVE sweet stewed tomatoes.
The first love of my life (mom) always added some broken toast into the stewed dish. (That is the way it was done in NW Ohio)

So it's an "Ohio" thing. Puzzle solved. Thanks for the response.
P.S. I thought the crouton was the only good thing about it. Sorry.

What's a POA membership card?
It is a card showing membership in the POA. :ohdear:
The POA is the Property Owners Asssoc. and is the opposite view of the Villages Homeowners Assoc. on all matters.
Oh, so you can join the POA as well as be in the villagers homeowners assoc? It sounds like the two groups don't like to play well together.

Sure, you can belong to both. The POA is something like $10/year, I believe. Some say, well I get it in my driveway for free anyway, but let's face it, it costs money to print a newspaper.

Vic's is our favorite "Special" dinner place to go. Love the stewed tomatoes and have always had a top quality meal there. The last time we were there on a Friday night they also had good dance music to enjoy.
We just renewed our membership and yes it's $10 for the household. Many interesting features in the newspaper and it seems to be a group that really works for all the Village homeowner's with any and all issues.

We are from NW Ohio also. We didn't have much growing up and often this was a meal. We stewd them canned them ourselves. This meal was much like our Beef Manhattens without the beef.....

Recipe for quick sweet stewed tomatoes.
1 can diced tomatoes with juice.
1/2 cup sugar
2 Tablespoons Butter
1 Slice of white bread or toast torn up....or is it 2 slices of bread? Either will work.
Heat together and eat. Some people put in a greased cassarole and bake it and some put it in sauce pan and heat it.
Try to NOT think about all that butter and remember how much lycopene tomatoes have. ;)

100% agree with you. Will be taking my sweetheart to Vic's tonight for Valentines. By the way, they make a wonderful Brouscheta for an appetizer. (Thats tomatoes too)

Do they have sides like baked potato, salad? I find it hard to believe it's just the tomato thing.

I LOVE sweet stewed tomatoes.
My mother-in-law used to put sweet stewed tomatoes on Thanksgiving stuffing. She would make gravy too, but she and I loved the stewed tomatoes best. She also put it on mac & cheese. Loved that too.

Yes, salad did come with the dinner as well as a choice of potato or rice. All in all the experience was very good with the exception of the choice of veggie (JMHO. I'm from the Northeast.)

Next time let the waiter know you would like something different for a veggie. They will accommodate your request.

My husband and I went to Vic's Embers for the first time last week. I absolutely loved the experience. I would rate La Cuisine in Ocala and Vic's Embers in Leesburg on the top of my list for BEST places to go outside the "Bubble". Yes, the stewed tomatoes sounded very weird and unappetizing to me, hence, we didn't choose them. BUT - I am floored with the tableside Caesar salad that was prepared. Tableside Caesar salad is SO rare to experience anymore at restaurants that it was such a treat!! Had a filet mignon and tornadoes of beef for our entrees. Spent some hefty money, but we didn't care. The experience outweighed the spending and we also weighed more afterwards. LOL

Nope, it's popular in eastern NC also, they stick some bread in it and call it "tomato pudding" ! I never acquired a taste for it!

Can I pay them $10 a year to stop littering my driveway?
