LOCAL SURVIVORS JOIN AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY TO CELELBRATE WORLD WITH MORE BIRTHDAYS AT ANNUAL
RELAY FOR LIFE OF THE VILLAGES OF HOPE
Help Paint the County Purple and Honors Local Survivors and Remembers Those Lost to Cancer

Sumter County, FL (February 14, 2013] – A birthday is a special day on the calendar for just about anybody—but it’s a particularly meaningful milestone to cancer survivors and their families and caregivers. The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of The Villages of Hope offers survivors and their loved ones a chance to celebrate all the additional candles on their cakes since diagnosis.

The annual, overnight event, held at The Wildwood Community Center on Friday, April 5, 2013, is also a way for the community to honor and celebrate the lives of local cancer survivors; and it reminds us that cancer doesn’t sleep, and neither will we until we find the cure.

The Relay For Life of The Villages of Hope will join forces with the Relay For Life of Sumter County to Paint the County Purple! Paint the County Purple activities are being planned now. Show your support with the donation of $5 for a “Paint the County Purple” Bow to be displayed at your business, home, and golf cart or where ever you would like! Call the local office at 352.326.9599 or contact Debbie Marsich with RFL of the Villages of Hope at fcn.hope@live.com or Shari Bare with RFL of Sumter County at sharibare49@gmail.com.

Since the first Relay For Life, held in 1985 in Tacoma, Washington, the event has raised more than $4 billion at more than 5,200 events throughout the country.

Relay For Life opens as cancer survivors of all ages walk or run around the track for the first lap. This emotional time sets the stage for the importance of each participant's contribution. A festive atmosphere develops as teams of 10 to15 people join the American Cancer Society’s efforts to help people get well, stay well, fight back and find cures.

Highlighting the evening is the Luminaria service, a vigil held at nightfall to honor survivors and to remember those lost to cancer. Luminaria line the track and remain lit throughout the night as a reminder to participants the importance of their involvement in the Relay For Life event.

“Relay For Life is a great opportunity to come together and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays,” said Debbie Marsich Team Development Chair of Relay For Life in The Villages of Hope. “It provides us with a way to celebrate and honor cancer survivors, remember those lost to the disease and fight back with the shared belief that cancer will be one day be eliminated.”

The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. To learn more about us or to get help, call us any time, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.
