JUST RETURNED from Publix. When are they EVER going to build shopping for new area?? The store is getting so crowded. I felt like I was shopping during Xmas week !! What is going on that it is taking so long with so many new residents out there???

Publix and other stores will be crowded between now and early next week because it is turnover time...thousands of renters will pour in over the weekend, all of whom head for the store to stock up. We do need a new store along 466A but Sweetbay pulled out because of their financial problems at the corporate level and Publix is on hold for unknown reasons.

Remember the Publix's ad came out yesterday, so today Publix's maybe crowded.
Try shopping at another time of the day or shop at another grocery store.
Just be happy that you live in The Villages.

It will get a little less crowded come April one when the high season is over.

spring breakers/visitors are adding to the crowding.
However what is apparently different regarding building of new stores in the "new" areas....The new shopping centers usually anchored by Publix were under construction and or already in before the new construction areas got under way.
Colony Plaza for example was done long before the area nearby was starting to be actively built upon.
One would think by now or before now there would be some similar shopping built around the Brownwood area. Not even a measuring stake in the ground yet (just kidding...I don't know that). But there is a definite change in the patter of new areas and associated shopping evolving compared to the past.
Hopefully it is not another sign/indicator of how differently the developer is conducting bussiness now as they approach build out.

I agree. What in the world is going on that they keep building more and more homes and still NOTHING at Browntown (except movie and one city grill) and NO grocery stores etc.. They already need all of this The population out there has exploded already!!

can't blame it all on the rental , snowbirds. It's NEW RESIDENTS MOVING IN out there and they are FULL TIME. they already need new grocery stores, restaurants, bowling alley, dancing, softball fields etc... New residents are moving into St James , Sanibel, Gilcrest, Pinellas, etc..... They need shopping plus!!

The developer cannot force a business to come. He can build a building for them if they commit. No change...same old modus operandi.
There were plans by Sweetbay to build by the municipal building and the library on 466A and then they began closing stores, so I would guess that their plans to build more is on hold.
You wait and see, Publix will build a store soon. I feel it in my bones.
But don't blame the Morses. It is always to their business advantage to build buildings to lease but you have to have businesses to say they will occupy those buildings.

I was there with you about the same time and it was crazy, but not much crazier than any other day in high season. I really, really dislike it, but what are you gonna do? Of course it doesn't help they have to be in the aisles restocking shelves, but no way to get around that.
BTW - if there are BOGO they are all week long so that shouldn't contribute to the problem.

I think one difference between the construction of Colony Plaza retail area and the area around Brownwood is that when Colony was constructed, there were a lot of potential customers already in place (i.e., the area south of Sumter Landing) and even more being actively built (Hadley, Hemingway, etc.) For these people, Colony became the most convenient place to shop.
Brownwood on the other hand is quite aways from where most of the construction has been going on (closer to 466A). Hence, for most of the new residents, Colony would still be the closer place to shop than Brownwood. Since Publix already has a semi-monopoly on that market, there is little incentive for them to compete with themselves by putting in another store that would actually be less convenient than the Colony store. Now that I see some construction of houses going on closer to Brownwood, this situation will likely change in the future.

Last year the checkers at Colony Publix told me the plan for new store was moved from 2013 to 2014, but of course they did not know why. Since it will be down by Brownwood, it is not likely to relieve the over crowding of the stores in Colony anyway. It will serve the folks who live off Buena Vista, but probably not those who live near Morse. Stores have to wait for their customer base to develop to turn a profit. Our Walgreens folks told me theirs is the busiest in TV, and I believe it. I just get my "rain check" for any sale items and get them the following week. No big deal. I let workmen who are coming in to buy their lunch at Publix go ahead of me. They are on a time clock, and I remember when I had to hurry through a hasty lunch to get to the next meeting, etc. I love retirement!

They are no more than a 25 minute golf cart ride or 15 minutes in the car away. Brownwood to 466= 20-25 minutes. Not sure what all the rhubard is about. Relax, take a nice quiet ride to get your groceries.

The new Publix will be built where the Sweetbay was supposed to be on 466A. Sweetbay will be closer to Brownswood. They are not anticipating that opening until spring 2015. ARGGH. As a person who used to use Publix in Colony I was deeply disappointed to hear this. After being hit by a cart twice ion one day, both of which resulted in a cut or a bruise, I have switched to Sam's or Winn Dixie. There is room to shop there. It really does not help too much to change your shopping hours because it is always crowded. Most of us are pretty busy and we came here to fit shopping in around our activities schedules. Since going to the other stores has alerted me to the fact that Publix is so over priced, I will not be going back.
This is a corporate decision by the company not the developer.
I called the Villages retail devision one time to see when we were going to get more retail down here and they said everyone is waiting until it becomes more populated. What is up with that? It has become more populated. Since I moved here 2 3/4 years ago, they have buikt thoudands of new homes.

It may be a matter of location. I think what people are saying is that the samllest Publix is situated in the most populated area and is the only grocer in the south part of the Villages. So the top half has 7 groceries if you leave out Aldis and the bottom has one. I can see why the Northern Villagers do see this as a problem. Truthfully, I do not want to have to drive 20-25 mins to pick up milk. Even the Publix is about 10 mins from me.
This ia ll about perspective. If you are well served your perspective is different than if you are struggling to get served. One day I went there and picked a ticket for the deli. My number was 37 and they were on 89 from the last 100 tickets. There were 11 people behind the counter but it still took over 20 mins to get service. :boom:

Publix is only open until 9 pm; SweetBay until 11. The deli at swbay is so much less expensive than publx. the bogo's are good at publix and if you put 2 coupons on it is is even better.
we purchase staples at aldi: milk 2.19 for 1/2 gal vs 2.65 at publx; eggs 1.55 vs 2.49; grape tomatoes 75 cents vs 1.49..and on an on. meats are less expensive at swbay. ceral and cat litter at sam's and they have rotisserie chickens 4.88 vs 7.99 everywhere else.
oh yeah; i was sidetracked.
the publix at colony plaza is the most profitable in the entire chain. the management consistently under estimates the product he needs to order, and since he consistently receives his quarterly bonus he does not have to try harder. (i heard this from someone who works in the customer service area). they hear the complaints more than anyone else. when the snowbirds are here they need more product.....but since there is no more room to put it out there is no more product available.
we need shopping at the south end of TV!
thank you.

No matter how far or how crowded a grocery store is, isn't it better than driving in snow and ice to get there? It's all about your location folks.

Many businesses have specific profit & traffic levels that have to be met before they will build an additional store within the same general area. The Darden Restaurant Group (Red Lobster, Olive Garden & Longhorn) have very strict quotas that must be met before they expand within an area.
Yes, all the stores & restaurants are very busy right now, but once the snowbirds fly off, store traffic levels will decrease. Most businesses will not build 2 nearby stores that will operate half full. Before they expand they want their one store to be operating at full capacity plus a half before they are going to open another nearby store.

We don't understand how that small parking lot was approved for so many stores in Colony Plaza. Think about it, and of course there will be more built on the open ground in front of Publix some day soon.
Like other posters have stated, I go grocery shopping at 7:30pm and it is relatively empty. I had to run in the other day for a prescription and had to park down by Bealls. I'm not complaining as the extra steps are good for me but I was thinking of those who can't walk that far.
On a brighter note, has anyone noticed the huge parking lot that has gone in next to the Library along 466A? Could that be the new Publix in the making?

I know the developer gets a percentage of commercial businesses, but it never occured to me that they get a percentage of the collections of a religious organization.
It's no wonder the big corporations don't want to build in TV. If Publix builds on one side of SR44, it probably costs them 10% of their income plus rent. If they buy their own land and build on the other side of SR44, they get to keep all of the income. That would be a no brainer.

United Methodist Church has a sign up on 44A just east of Brownwood----15 acres to build a new church that will be golf cart accessible. You must remember that two years ago there were no houses south of 466A. Soon enough there will be more stores for shopping and eating in TV south. Meanwhile, shop Public as has been suggested---7:30- 10:00 and after 6:30 in the evening. That shouldn't be difficult.

Publix is HUGELY overpriced! I feel very taken advantage of when I go there, so I'm now spending my money at Sweetbay. I was picking up a pineapple that was already pealed...the ones in the plastic containers and WhenI looked at the price it was 6.99!!!! Really? I'm not that stupid. So, I went to Sweetbay and got it for 4.99. That's a 2.00 difference on just one item. Just think how much extra you spend at Publix when getting all of your groceries there??

I guess overpriced is a matter of experience. Having just recently moved here from Baltimore, I haven't found anything to be overpriced compared to what we were paying up there. It's all a bargain to us.
When I was young I remember my mother carefully studying all of the various newspaper grocery store ads each week and then laying out a strategy for buying the week's groceries. Hamburger at one store, bread at another, chicken at another an so on. As I got older I always thought she spent more in gas than she saved, but I know she would disagree. She's 90 now and still does it that way.

JUST RETURNED from Publix. When are they EVER going to build shopping for new area?? The store is getting so crowded. I felt like I was shopping during Xmas week !! What is going on that it is taking so long with so many new residents out there???
Let's be realistic here..... Builders - build!!!!! "If you build it, they will come." It's not only seasonal renters or owners causing this bottleneck, it's new residents moving into those lovely new villages across 466A, as well as the build out of St Charles, St James and Pennecamp. It's called, over-building.
These builders and/or developers don't sync their plan to build with such things as residents access to shops or in this instance, grocery stores. They could care less. And, if Publix, Sweetbay or any other grocer decides to build or not to build will be totally dependent upon whether these corporations see the profit potential or the need to do so. After all, crowded though Publix's may be, people still manage to get their needs met albeit with frustrations.
Gracie Girl is correct, the Morses have nothing to do with this aspect of the issue (but in an indirect way, they do.)
If potential residents start paying more attention to some of these issues, and delay their purchases on the basis of this, builders would likely pay more attention to making sure that some of these services are in place before continuing to over build. After all, they make a point of getting recreation centers, golf courses and the likes in place don't they?

Your last statement is true. BUT they can't control whether corporations will open businesses here, OR WHEN. Think for a moment. They can build spec homes but not likely to build a spec grocery store. I imagine that each huge chain has an architechtural committee deciding where the beans are stacked and how big the bakery part is. I would guess that the Morse builders are waiting with their hammers and trowels for someone to commit.
I know I defend them a lot, but I am truly in awe of how carefully planned and well maintained this place is.
And...this is just a little bit mean on my part, because our house is a little more than a year old just off 466. The choice existed very recently, at the same time many people chose to build in Sanibel and Fernandina to build in Mission Hills and Bridgeport at Laurel Valley which is very close to MANY of the groceries, doctors and restaurants and churches. AND anyone can still buy resale in those areas right now. So there are choices for all.
Gary Morse isn't our mother.
Disclaimer. I don't work for the Morses, don't know anybody in that family and please whoever you are don't send me any more mean PMs accusing me of getting paid by the developer.

I wonder if that is affecting Brownwood and why it is sooo slow to build up. People are scared to start a business and you can't blame them. all I know is they need stores over that area NOW because the population is already enough to support businesses and yet they are still not in. Would make me little worried if I were to purchase a home over there.

I would love to be able to shop at 8:30 PMsh so I can get him fed and settled before I go, but Publix closes early. When I quit working I was planning on being able to golf and do more of the other amenities in the early AM.
I respect the fact that the store is less busy at those times but it is really just about the right amount of traffic for a smaller store , with smaller aisles than most, and which needs to be stocked constantly. In most stores the restocking is done overnight; that would not work here. Additionally, they do not have enough space to order enouch food to have everything you need when you need it.
I know they have had boucoup complaints so complaining verbally will not help. The only solutions for me is to allow them to make me plan my retirement around them rather than them planning their business around me as most businesses are doing, or to move on to greener pastures. I have moved on and found that things are much cheaper elsewhere as one poster noted. Even though the new Publix will be built closer to my home, I will still drive past it to get the reduction in prices and good service I get at Winn Dixie.:spoken:

I predict:
Most of the complainers on this thread (and others that are similar) will, 3-4 years from now, look back at their statements and be embarrassed.
As the population expands and most commercial areas get filled south of 466a there will be plenty of shopping etc.
I live in Brownwood and I personally like that the majority of the commercial district is NOT right next to me. I like the feel of our neighborhoods being all homes, golf courses (13 execs and 4 championship very close) and rec centers. Doesn't sound bad, does it?

Disclaimer. I don't work for the Morses, don't know anybody in that family and please whoever you are don't send me any more mean PMs accusing me of getting paid by the developer.
I find it very schizophrenic about how if somebody here (like me) attacks "The Villages Lifestyle" you will be eaten raw without ketchup, yet so many people here feel fully free to attack Gary Morse at every possible turn for any conceiveable reason. Gary Morse..who had the vision to expand on his father's plan and built your little nirvana.
The wait's too long in TVRH's ER? It's gotta be the fault of Gary Morse. There aren't enough grocery stores to suit you? It's gotta be Gary Morse's fault. Taco Bell at Spanish Springs didn't put enough sauce on your taco? Gotta be that damned Gary Morse!!
Gary Morse is a class "A" genius. No Gary Morse=No Villages. So would you rather have one less Publix store or no Gary Morse and thus, no Villages??
P.S. GracieGirl..I hope this post doesn't violate my promise to you to stop saying mean things on TOTV.

JUST RETURNED from Publix. When are they EVER going to build shopping for new area?? The store is getting so crowded. I felt like I was shopping during Xmas week !! What is going on that it is taking so long with so many new residents out there???
I love Publix, and so does everyone else! But I will tell you a dark secret about myself.....ok, here it is! I like to shop at the Walmart in Fruitland Park at the corner of 441/25A. I take 466A east to the stoplight at 25A, turn right and follow 25A to Walmart....only 6 miles from my house. Also Aldi's is in the very next shopping center....I like Aldi's a lot! Used to shop there in Illinois.

We would be happy if they would just put some sort of numbering system up in the parking lot so you can find your car when you come out!
I never have any trouble finding a place to park! The only problem you might have is if you want to park withing 10 spaces from the door.

What's been said the would embarrass anyone???

What's been said the would embarrass anyone???
The people who theorize about such things as: The developer having something to do with being the cause (4 posts).
The point IMHO is that there is no problem. Yes Publix is busy and so is the Walmart on 466. But you know why? Publix is the largest and most profitable grocery chain in the south. And Walmart is the largest and most profitable retail chain anywhere. There has to be a reason - it's called knowing how to price and run a business. And knowing where and when to place a new location. It doesn't happen by accident.

Part of the problem, IMHO, is that a lot of people came from areas that already had the commercial infrastructure in place when they moved in. So, they are accustomed to these things being available and convenient. As posted elsewhere, this area was farms and fields before TV. As TV expands, the homes go in before the commercial support. No company is going to build a big superstore standing alone in a field waiting for the surrounding area to be build up. Their fixed costs are too great to survive. They have to wait until there is a sufficient customer base before committing to build. Once they make the decision, there are a myriad of decisions, negotiations, and approvals to go through before dirt is moved. But it will happen.
When I moved to TV, there was no SweetBay. The closest grocery was the Publix on 466, or the one near Spanish Springs, or the Winn-Dixie there. There was no Sams, no BestBuy, etc. They were fields. There was no Colony Plaza. Morse stopped just south of Mallory Hill CC. In just a few years, these businesses have all come in after the homes were built and occupied.

The vast majority of Publix employees do not receive health care from them. They require 1500 hours of service per year to be eligible. That is 30 hours per week and most employees are less than that. My wife works at the one in Colony Plaza and she knows of very people that participate in the health care offering. They are obviously growing and have over 1000 stores in the Southeast US.

Everything here is within 10 miles here, znd we still complain! Compare that to traveling 25 or more in most other areas where I lived, and I even had to use a car! The moral is: During high season, do not shop for groceries at Publix or any place else on the first day of the month. Rental contracts start on that day, and renters need to buy groceries. I.e., use your head and stop complaining about crowds.

Ya know, if a person gives a little bit of thought about it, there is about 90,000 residents living in the bubble, and 1,000's more around the edges, and we all need to get food! So, when do we all shop, mid-week?, weekends?, moving in day? Anytime with soooo many of us will contribute to chaos in the parking lot, ankle bites in the aisles, and stare downs at the deli department. When is a good time? That is what everyone else is wondering, so it just keeps going full circle.

I like te service, the products and the convenience of Publix, even though I am closer to Sweetbays. It takes a bit of patience. Take it easy folks, we are retired. It does take awhile to get through the traffic on the golf cart path. Some folks I know drive the whole three miles. Three miles, gee whiz.
Went to Publix today for a hurry-up meal. One of the items was $2.19. Stopped at Sweetbay on the way home to pick up a sale item. My $2.19 product from Publix was $1.59 at Sweetbay and wasn't on sale! Will be going to Sweetbay a lot more now!

From what I got its going to be out on 466a about 3 miles from the current publix. Probably to draw wildwood shoppers too.

I was in the Publix yesterday, and though I did not witness that incident, I did just get a pushy feel, all around the store....oh well, I can put up with that. It's soooooo much nicer than where I came from.
BTW, I was in Plant City this past weekend, for the Strawberry Festival. For those who don't know, Plant City is the home of Publix. We rode through the middle of the Publix area, several blocks on both sides of the road. The proprietor of our bed and breakfast was telling us she used to be a truck driver and often picked up produce in California. She said Publix, without a doubt, ALWAYS insisted on only the freshest, best packed, produce. I liked hearing that.

We've shopped the Publix at Southern Trace and even the one out by the hospital (can't remember what that shopping center is called). BOTH were much easier to shop thru, though they're laid out differently so it's a challenge to get a "lay of the land". We live closer to 466a but that one is way too small for the number of folks who shop there. Rudeness abounds as well....though I understand folks are in a "zone" many times trying to think about their shopping experience.
Was told by an employee to shop at the 466a facility before 10 (now I'd say 9) and after 5 pm.

I've never shopped at Publix's deli, so I'm not aware of their system, or if they have one. Do they not use a number system? Fresh Market uses a number system at their meat department, and it makes everything so much easier. I'm not sure what they do at ther deli--never shopped that dept. either.
You can even play numbers roulette with yourself and go off and do some shopping elsewhere in the store until you think your number is getting close.

Publix does use a number system. They have cold packages foods in open, self-serve, cases on other side of the aisle from the deli counter, so even people who are not needing deli service are pushing their carts down that aisle. It gets very congested!
Fresh Market deli does not have a number system. They are pretty good at keeping up with it. I seldom see them using the number system (though they do have it) in the meat section. They are all so nice, and fast, it just seems to flow OK.

I go to Fresh Market on Saturdays to get their specials. Their meat department is mobbed in the afternoon, and they do use the number system. It works very well, and I can't imagine why everyone doesn't use the number system. It eliminates stress.

It will get a little less crowded come April one when the high season is over.
Thank goodness!!

Why can't the Developer clear up the concern and let us know where and when a new large grocery store will reduce the congestion at the 466A Publix?

I am sure that will happen when a new large grocery store commits to open.
The developer can offer the site and can build a building but can't make a business commit to open.
You did read that Sweetbay is building right now just west of Buena Vista on 466A?
Walmart is five miles East of Publix Colony down 466A near the intersection of 441/27.

jasper1963 - maybe you could contact the district gov office and ask if they have that info...or you could try calling the corp office of publix, Winn-Dixie and sweet bay to ask of their intentions...and then let us know what you find out?
gracie's info is good info. if you need assistance in using one of those locations, pm me and I will do what I can to get you to either of those locations. whole foods is also in that same area.

I would like to see another supermarket company build a store on 466a. Competition is a good thing.

I'm sorry, a couple of corrections and comments::
Gracie - Walmart is not at the intersection of 441/27 and 466A. It is at the intersection of 441/27 and 25A. To go the back way, turn right on 25A at the traffic light on 466A before 441/27 and follow that around and you'll come to the Walmart parking lot (the back way, avoiding all the traffic).
njbeachbum - Whole Foods is down that way too?? Do you mean Aldi's???
my comments about Publix,, if I go there, its very early in the morning 8am or late at night 8pm. Also, I leave my cart in an out of the way place and shop a few aisles and return to the cart with the stuff I picked up. I do this especially around the deli/bakery area.
FYI - last week I happened to be in Belleview to visit a doctor and shopped in the Sweetbay on the corner of 301 and 441/27. It was a marvelous shopping experience. Everything was in its place, its well laid out, and it was EMPTY!!!!! I know its too far to go for normal shopping but everytime I'm close to there, I will be visiting that store.

Kathie is right as usual. It is at the intersection of 25A and 441/27...not far really.

We went there last Sunday (our Sunday outing--things are sinking to a new low!) and from Tamarind Grove it is a lot shorter than going to the one on 466. However, it is an older store and not quite as nice.I think the parking lot is pretty full, except there are no carts and no crazy people shooting diagonally across the lot. We will probably make that the Walmart we go to, when we go to Walmart. Normally we shop at Winn Dixie in Wildwood. Love that store. Clean, plenty of parking, not crowded, and the employees are great.

That is what people put in when they change their minds abut what they have posted and want to edit the post. You can't eliminate a post, but you have some time to edit it, so you can erase everything and either put ..., ///, or whatever.

Keep in mind, if the store is packed and busy, they are turning over their stock rapidly and you are more likely to have fresh produce and meats. If the store is not busy and lots of parking, well, their may be a reason for that as well.

We had to start going to Sweetbay, it's further away than the colony publix but the overall time spent going there is a lot less than going to publix. The whole trip to and from colony via the cart path is just jammed with carts, and customers. Hardly any parking at colony if you decide to go there anyhow.

That's good to know. I tried it once and it didn't work. Thought maybe there was a time limit. I know another poster had to go to Admin to have a post taken down.
What are the ...'s and ///'s for then, Bare? Or is it to show that you are thinking something but not wanting to really say it?
