Hi Everyone -- first time on TOTV so bear with me if I make some boo boos. My husband and I have visited The Villages twice and decided it's the place we want to be. Getting the house ready to put on the market - hopefully won't take too long to sell. We would love to be in The Villages before the end of summer. Anyway I have a question...we are getting ready to purchase supplemental insurance ... do any of you know if Capital Blue Cross supplemental insurance is widely acceptable in the Villages? I know I should probably put this under the medical heading but since I'm in the newbie section I thought I would throw the question out there. I have been following TOTV for almost a year and I'm thrilled to be part of it now. From what I have read there certainly seem to be a lot of really nice people that I can't wait to maybe meet in the future. Thanks for providing so much good information. :clap2:

Welcome Whimsey and sdavis 44! I also don't have an answer for your insurance question, maybe a health forum would be more helpful to you. Hope all of your plans and efforts to get yourselves down here go smoothly and to your best advantage. May I throw out a quick comment here that The Villages Orchestra is seeking string orchestral musicians and would be happy to have us in your future TV activities if you have that background.

Mike and Carolyn

Count us in-we're from Eastern PA (near Philly). However, we have not started to build, so will not be arriving until summer. We're planning on visiting in April to design our house.

Glad to "meet" you both.

Welcome, Whimsey! I hope your house sells soon.

I'm no expert, but it was my understanding that a supplemental health plan (if you are talking about a plan supplemental to Medicare insurance) covers you anywhere in the country, anywhere that accepts Medicare. An advantage plan is regional and you would pay additional if you needed medical services outside of the advantage plan's area.

For instance, since we have a permanent residence in MI, we did not take an advantage plan because we would pay extra if we needed medical down here at our FL residence. So we took out a supplemental with Omaha, which covers us anywhere without any extra penalty for being out of network.

On the other hand, an advantage plan will still cover you, just cost more for the services. But it is less expensive than the supplemental plan, so you could very well come out even if you rarely need health care out of network.

I suggest seeking the advice of a health insurance broker. We learned a lot from ours about Medicare and the extra insurance you need. Just keep in mind that they do not represent every single ins. plan out there, because they must take a course an be certified by every company, so they usually choose a few and sell those. At least, that's the way it is in MI.

Hope this helps. Anyone, feel free to point out any errors on my part.

Hello fellow Pennsylvanian, I would say your Capital BC should cover an emergency situation anywhere in the country(and out of country as well). Your coverage and OOP costs will depend on whether you have an HMO, PPO or traditional policy.
But if you are moving to TV as a primary resident you will need to find another provider. I don't know what age you are, if Medicare eligible then you will need to choose between MC and MC advantage plans that covers the area. If not you will need to find an individual policy for the TV coverage area.

CFrance - thx for the info and the good wishes. I think what you have said is totally correct. We would be on Medicare with a full supplemental so we should be covered. My concern was how many doctors in the Villages area take Blue Cross. Maybe I'll be able to get a list from BC. On another note I love your avatar. I am assuming you have a Golden Retriever. We had one for 10 years....truly our baby. I may need to come pet yours to get my fix. They are absolutely wonderful friends (dogs) !

MSG@TV - hope you have a great trip in April and loads of fun planning your home build.

TednRobin - your fuzzy guy is so cute too. Dogs just make my heart smile!

Whimsey, thanks for your warm wishes for our design appointment in April. Hope to meet you when we move down as Frogs.
I'm going to follow your thread on Blue Cross coverage, as it is what I'm covered by for another year. I've told my doctors I'm going to continue to keep the coverage until I'm eligible for Medicare in a little over a year. If it means a trip back, then so be it. I'll want to return anyway to visit my two adult children who are likely to remain in this area.
Love your Avatar!! :a040:

Thanks, Whimsey! You can come be knocked flat on the ground by Crosby whenever you want! He's our second golden. They both require(d) five minutes of furious wagging to get over the joy of someone arriving at the door. Fortunately we were able to train them not to jump up on people, but those are mighty strong tails those goldens have. It's more of a Total Butt Wag.

It was my understanding from our ins. broker that if you have a supplemental as opposed to advantage plan, it is accepted anywhere that Medicare is accepted.

For instance... our family doctor is in Ann Arbor, MI, at the University of Michigan. U of M will not accept anything but Blue Cross advantage plan. I didn't like their advantage plan. I got a supplemental instead, through Priority Health. Since it is a supplemental, and since U of M accepts Medicare, they accept my Priority Heath insurance, but only because it's a supplemental.

I have only had to go to the eye doctor (opth.) down here, but I had no problems with them accepting my ins.

Buying medical insurance is worse than buying tires! Best wishes.
