My neighbor has a one year old dog who is extremely high energy and is tethered day and night, both inside and outside the home. I suggested that she run him at Doggie Do Run but she said it didn't help because the dog just sat and didn't play. I would like to know the best time to go so she could get encouragement from other dog owners and teach her dog to play. It is sad to see this high energy dog so restrained. Thanks

I wonder why the dog is tethered while inside the home.

There are 4 dog sections open to the public at Doggie Doo Run Run (DDRR). One is for small dogs, another for big, and then there are an agility area and a five acre or so field for any sized dogs to go.

It is usually busiest in the small dog section (30 lbs or under) around 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. The big dog section has a lot more comings and goings of people with dogs from around 7 a.m. through 11:00 a.m. There are then people coming in sporadically after those times. Sometimes there is a group of people who also come after 4 p.m. or so in both the small and large dog sections. DDRR closes at 6 p.m.

This depends on the weather though.

About a mile north of CR466 at the intersection of CR101 and CR104. It is north of Southern Trace Shopping Center up the road that has the New Covenant United Methodist Church, Crispers, CVS. http://www.newcovenantumc-fl.org/

Our Irish and English Setter go there between 7-8 am every morning, rain or shine. It is still cool in the morning but the afternoon in the open fields can be too hot for dogs and owners. I suggest morning. And dogs should not be tied up in the house. The owner sounds like she may need some training so she can work with her dog. The dog sounds agitated and depressed to me! Dogs need to run and play, just like people. If I was restricted all day I would be bouncing off the walls. Sounds like maybe the dog may be too much for the owner to deal with? This is a sad story to me.

Thank you for caring about this high-energy dog, and for suggesting that she needs to run and play. We are huge fans of Doggie Doo Run Run and go there every day. Your neighbor's dog needs to be neutered and have up-to-date shots to use DDRR. The cost for one dog is $25 per month.

Approximately how large is her dog? There is one area for dogs under 30 lbs and another for larger dogs. Fireboy and I are usually at DDRR between 4 PM and 5 PM with our 70 lb dog in large dogs, and our 10 lb dog in small dogs. You are right that both the owner and the dog need encouragement. I would be more than happy to make a "play date" with your neighbor and to do what I can to provide encouragement.

Sometimes it takes a while for dogs to fit in and enjoy the dog park. Once they get over their initial "shyness", almost all dogs LOVE the dog park! Even dogs that don't want to socialize often enjoying chasing balls or catching a frisbee.

Barefoot - your last statement is right on. I have an Aussie with more energy than the energizer bunny, but if he went to the dog park he would not interact with the other dogs. He just doesn't play like that, but if bring out the ball - game on. She needs to determine if the dog wants to socialize (which would be ideal) or if he is more comfortable with one on one play time with his owner. Either way - should definitely not be tied up all the time.

Ugh, breaks my heart.........maybe these folks could put their pup in daycare at Doo Run Run.......my Molly goes about once a week. Joe and Scott are excellent at introducing other dogs into the pack. They are open 7am - 6pm. The can drop the dog off and leave it for the day.....if they are worried about the dog getting dirty there is a bathtub onsite offered at no charge, just bring your own supplies. Do keep us posted on the pooch, thanks Duffysmom.

My Aussie won't bring the ball back. Just comes close and then bolts so I will chase HIM.
