I have a west facing lanai as well. Summer is unbearable. Any suggestions for cooling it down? I bought Awnair adjustable awnings and that help shade it, but it is still stifling. Would insulation help?

If you have windows, try closing all the windows and keeping the door between your air conditioned house and the lanai open. of course keeping the shades down will help as well.

We totally agree! We would NOT give up our west facing lanai/birdcage. The sunsets are AWESOME and well worth the few days when it is hot. Even than, we do not mind at all.

Few days it is hot??? You're kidding, right?

lol. Nope, not at all. We also have a pool so it helps to have it when it is hot too. The Birdcage keeps it somewhat cooler also. Our utility bills are still low compared to what most are saying. Winter utility is even better. I guess the heat hasn't bothered us as much as much. We used to get 90s plus north also. Even last summer it was hotter north than here. 100s plus.

I was told it gets so hot, you can grille a steak on a rock in the summer.

Lou....would you please try grilling a steak on a rock in July and report back??

Sunset photos are beautiful and I wish I was there watching one RIGHT NOW!

Folks it's a fact, not an opinion West side is the hottest and for the longest part of the day all year.

Therefore, it is a factor to consider in buying a home.

yes it was a nice pic

Beautiful pictures!

I know from previous threads many people prefer the west facing lanai. Even better with a pool!

I happen to be a person who prefers the heat to the cold. We would take our island vacations in July and August!

Thanks for sharing.

Get an east facing lanai then for the 10 minutes of sunset, get a chair and a cool drink and sit out front and enjoy...

Hi guys; great pictures.
We too love the sunsets. We would only consider west facing lanais when we picked our lot and we have been in FL since 2004.

I think your picture is beautiful. Period. I don't feel the need to add any negative comment about anything. I am glad you are enjoying your west facing view and all that goes with it.

I guess if you're used to 100 degrees, then 90 degrees is nothing. I think I read somewhere that central florida has over 100 days annually of days that are 90 degrees or hotter. I personally cannot do 90 degrees sitting in the sun (in a west facing lanai) for any period of time. To each his/her own.

Beautfiful picture!

FL summers are part of being a resident here. Some choose to become air conditioned critters others like us enjoy the weather no matter what. What beats sitting by the pool in the shade with overhead fans going, family/good company and some great views?
Nothing!!!

We enjoy it 11 out of 12 months a year....try that north of the MAson Dixon line.

It's a good thing some like east and others west or all the houses would be facing the same way!

Our lanai faces north west and we love the sun in the afternoon. We have a pool so it's just perfect. It does get hot but we are in Florida! I'll take the 90 degree, west facing lanai any day over a foot of snow. In fact, I prefer the summer days over the winter days here. Guess I moved to the right place. We also get breathtaking sunsets that I wouldn't trade. Glad you are enjoying your home.

Summer is not any hotter here in TV than in Illinois---just many weeks longer. Surprisingly, humidity is also about the same with the evening (after 9:00pm) on the average cooler. Lanai faces the west warm in the winter and beautiful sunsets. Just right for snowbirds. :ho:

I agree - the west facing lanai's are nice in the winter when the weather is cooler - perfect for snowbirds. But most will agree that for year round people, we have so much really, really hot weather, that the east lanai is preferred. I'll never forget my neighbors talking about their west facing lanai, and how they just couldn't use it in the hot summers. They used the word "fry".
