As a new owner in The Villages, we have tried several eateries. We have been disappointed that there is a lack of fresh Seafood.

Try the Lighthouse at Lake Sumter, they are as close as we have come to good fish.

Thanks... we've been there also. I am just about resolved that fresh (well prepared) Seafood is just a shortcoming of the eateries in The Villages, but if that's all I can find wrong, I'm sure I'll live!

By "the fruit shack," do you mean the place at the corner of 301 & 466? If not, can you tell me where it is?

The fish guy on 466 is located on the left hand side of 466 going towards Rolling Acres. As you pass Morse there are some buildings on the left hand side, then there is a small "mall" (for want of a better description) and right at the end of that there is a fruit stand. He puts his truck right there between the stores and the fruit stand, but he is not there every day. There was a thread running before that gave his hours and days. Evidently you call him and he brings what you want.

Where is our wonderful "link" guy? Please help me with this floundering around I am doing here!

There are many great seafood restaurants nearby but I know of none in TV. If you're willing to travel to Inverness, Ocklawaha, or Tavares or even over near the gulf you can get excellent fresh fish. Lighthouse Restaurant and Bonefish are good and we enjoy going there but they weren't exactly what we are looking for when we want really good, fresh fish.

but here what is noted on the menu as butterfish is another fish named that .butter fish are only about a pound ish and mostly off the coast of maine and are not really fished..with as much as served in TV alone it would be hard to produce this tiny fish

I read recently that 87% of the time you order Red Snapper you are not getting it. This doesn't surprise me since for many years Red Snapper has been on the list of scarce fish. My pet peeve is ordering Grouper which is a very round or fat fish. When it is served it looks like a fillet of Tilapia instead of being at least 3/4" thick. It is NOT Grouper.

Publix at Southern Trace has a special today on Canada lobster (cold water lobster) for $9.99 a lb. They will cook it for you, so you don't have to smell up your house. I think their regular price is $17.99 a lb. Yum.

The dish can also be served without the miso marinade. Adding the miso makes it more expensive here. It is usually sold packaged in small chunks at the fish market. I believe the name refers to the dish, not the type of fish.

Thanks for posting this. I just got mine, 1 1/2lbs of deep cold water Lobster! Cooked in the store and will become a wonderful lobster roll - thankfully the other half does not care for Lobster which leaves more for me!

I spoke to the Manager of the Fish Department. He said they have a tankful of lobsters, this is an in house special price only as long as the lobsters last.

Butterfish are aptly named; they're smooth and buttery with fine flaky white flesh and have very little fat. They're easy to eat whole, since they have relatively few bones. If you can't find butterfish, use pompano or mackerel.

Serves 4

Ingredients

Eight 6- to 8-ounce whole butterfish, or pompano or mackerel
2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Parsley sprigs, for garnish
Directions

Prepare a stove-top griddle or outdoor grill with the rack set 1 inch above the coals. Allow the grill to get very hot.
Meanwhile, brush the butterfish with the olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill the butterfish about 3 minutes per side, until the fish just begins to flake. Arrange 2 butterfish on each of 4 dinner plates, garnish with the parsley, and serve.

We feel the same..........Oysters seem to be the only raw bar food we can get at Magnolia's in Leesburg, look for their add in the Daily Sun........opening soon as Rita's on 301

I agree with Madelaine. We enjoyed it and ate there several times and then also took our visiting son, his wife, and daughter there again. Had we stayed longer than October and November we would have become regulars.

Once we ate inside and all the other times we ate outdoors on the deck looking at Lake Sumter. Gave us our "seafood fix" until we get to the Maine seacoast again......this summer. If you go before the dinner "rush" there is no problem getting a table with a water view. The outdoor deck tables fill up fast.

I also had seafood at the Waterfront Inn which was good.

If you like to fish???? there is a deep sea fishing group that goes out on the ocean. It's website can be accessed from the Virginia Trace website.
When hubby sells his boat........that's what he's going to do....once we get to TV that is.

Another great idea. Fish is not that difficult to prepare.
Red snapper in parchment paper might be something to try, if they have the red snapper.
Broiled cod.
Or, if you prefer to "bread" the fish....haddock or flounder (not sure if that is in Florida waters)......shrimp.

You can do this in parchment paper or aluminum foil.......pesce in carta/fish in paper. Red snapper is particularly good, but you can use any fresh fish.

On Tuesdays at the farmers market in Lady Lake there is a guy with a truck on the corner that sells the best shrimp and fresh fish. He has his own fishing/shrimp boat. His prices seem very reasonable. I also get fresh seafood at Marion market on the weekends. His prices are reasonable as well. I find the guy on 466 expensive.

There is a great place on RT 40, called Lena's Seafood, open 11-8 daily.
The owners have another place in Salisbury, MA. As soon as you walk into the establishment you know the fish will be great.....

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Fisherman's Cove Restaurant on Rt 44 west towards Inverness. It's about 10 miles west of I-75 on the right across the road from Wild Bill's Airboat Rides. It's a small building but fish is outstanding! There is a menu online. Beer battered haddock is the best fish fry since upstate NY!

We go to Homosassa to Shelly's to get our seafood. It is a nice day trip from the bubble and the fish is excellent. The guy from Clayton's on 466 was disappointing to us...the fish was not as fresh as I want. By the way, there is a butterfish...Japanese butterfish - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_butterfish), but it is not what is served around here.

Stumpknockers on St Rt 200,has great fish dinners. I think the all you can eat catfish dinner is the best, get it cooked how you like it

I agree!!! Great place for fried and baked fish. Building is real old, but fish is great.

Actually, Cod and Haddock are in the same family. If you want to pay high price for fresh fish, go to LegalSeafoods.com and they guarantee fresh fish shipped overnight. It's out of the Boston area. I've had fresh haddock shipped a couple of times, (thick) along with Maine Lobster.
