View Full Version : Terrible Accident 466A and Buena Vista

I got home from Palmetto Exec Course today about 4pm and jumped in my car to go to Colony Plaza. However when returning southbound as I entered Buena Vista from St. Charles, police were making all the southbound traffic turn back north. At the intersection at CR 466A and Buena Vista it appeared a tan car, maybe a Buick that looked to have been making a right on right to go westbound on 466A toward Wildwood was smashed in the driver's and was up against the utility pole that supports the traffic lights. The roof was either ripped off, or cut off. Sitting on 466A facing westbound was about a 10 year old Chevy Blazer that apparently hit the tan car. I would say that whoever was driving the tan car could not have survived. I'm thankful that when we passed to within about 20' of the two cars, that the bodies had already been removed. The accident had to have happened between 4:00 and 4:25pm, because that the two times I passed through the intersection.

John, thank you for reporting this. It is so sad to see and hear of all the accidents in the villages. I'm so sorry for those people and will say a prayer for them.

We heard all of the sirens while sitting on our lanai in Sanibel. Hope and pray those involved survived.:pray:

We heard the sirens too. Be careful...people don't stop for red lights, stop signs or yield for yield signs. Never hit the gas pedal when the light turns green as someone could be blowing through the light. Always look both ways when the light turns green to be sure the traffic is going to stop. Saved my life on a few occasions.

I was there right after it happened. Heading south on Buena Vista I was stopped for the light at 466A. There were three or 4 cars ahead of me on Buena Vista. When the light changed and nobody moved I realized something unusual had happened. A couple of cars pulled over and I could see the wreckage. Horrible. I agree, I don't think anyone could have survived in the sedan. The side was pushed up to perhaps the center console. The blazer had to be cooking. I don't know how it happened but someone obviously ran that light. Fortunately there were already people on the scene trying to help so I continued on my way, making a left onto 466A headed toward Colony. There were fire trucks heading toward the accident very quickly. I passed the first one going in the opposite direction at about Canal St. and a second at about Morse. Very, very quick response time.

I hope and pray that big helicopter waiting on Powell was able to take away the people still alive, to a trauma center in Orlando, Gainesville, Tampa etc.

So very glad you missed the accident & were not involved in it yourself. Those poor people. This is another reminder to make every day count.

Blowing lights (also the turn/arrows), stop signs and running on thru at the roundabouts! Happens all the time! No wonder there aren't MORE accidents!!!

Prayers and concern for those from today's accident!!!

No. When I called a week or so ago the news editor said they go off the police blotter. I don't know if that comes out less than daily. I wish I had a way to forward the news we get on this forum directly to the Sun.

The only negative news in The Sun..just glancing at it, was that a Villager was charged with selling liquor to underage kids. Actually a number of area people were charged with selling liquor to underage kids. It did NOT give the location.

Anything in the Commercial, those who read it?

I have photographed vehicles that looked like they had been compacted at a junk yard and talked to the occupants who walked away relatively unharmed . Let's hope this is the case for the occupants of the tan vehicle

Did not see anything in the Ocala, Leesburg nor Orlando newspapers about this accident. I have seen very nasty wrecks along US 19 on the Gulf Coast where people have walked away. That stretch of highway had a huge numbers of car accidents because of the very large number of vehicles and their speed. This was while I lived in Palm Harbor from 1996 through 2005.

I read awhile back that US19 is the worst road for wrecks in Florida.

I can believe that. Had heard that they were trying to fix it and make it more safe but cannot really see how you can do that with a 70 m.p.h highway with a large number of strip malls.

Drive defensively folks!

I can't count the number of times every day that I see both cars and golf carts breeze through stop signs and traffic signals.

Also, I'd estimate that only 1 in 10 golf cart drivers use the required hand signals and many don't even use the mechanical turn signals.

Again, drive defensively folks ... for your own protection!

Not to be augmentative, but where does it say your are required to use hand signals when in a golf cart? I see too many people use hand signal and not the mechanical turn signals. The lights are far easier to see than the arms sticking out.

Please advise....

The VHA's Golf Cart Safety brochure references using "......directional or hand signals....." - see 1st paragraph in the brochure:

Hey Bro... That brochure also says this:

Please keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times. It's in BOLDED typeface.

So..... I think the law says you must signal a turn. Some carts don't have directional signals (i.e.. carts you rent from the golf course), so if you're in those carts, you should use hand signals.

In all honesty, I be happy if people used ANY signals.. :a040:

So how did we go from a two car accident on 466a where one car ran a red light to the dangers of not using hand signals while driving a golf cart? Can anyone say "hijack"?

Many carts turn signal indicators, and brake lights, are very hard to see in bright daylight. They are easy to see at night. For that reason, when I used to drive a golf cart, I used both the cart's turn signal and the classic hand signal.

Don't believe everything you read in the "Happy Paper." Our neighbor was in the sedan t-boned at the intersection and is in the hospital with 3 serious breaks in his pelvis that will take a very long recovery. Minor injury????? No, serious. Bad reporting, yes.

Perhaps I am to blame. I relayed the message and now can't find Friday's paper. Maybe it said not life threatening injuries.

I was just heartened to read the folks lived and I pray that eventually they will be well.

And welcome to the forum lbusch.

Not sure it is bad reporting. Maybe those at the scene were not qualified to determine that one passenger had 3 serious breaks in their pelvis. Maybe the EMT's, at their level of examination determined minor injuries that they passed along to the Battalion Fire Chief.
You seem quick to attack the "Happy Paper".

The most common type......of course.

That which is developed from input on a subject......from only one perspective.

I couldn't say, as I don't read them very often.

I'm guessing though, that they don't habitually suppress any news that could he construed as shining a negative light on their community.

When's the last time you've read a police blotter, or an article on serious golf cart accidents regarding our community?

Yeah....that's what I thought. ;)

Lots of online newspapers you can read for free. I like to read The Washington Post on a regular basis.

I also read the Daily Sun on a daily basis. Certainly do not read it for their new worthiness but it is a very good local paper. I subscribed to the Orlando Sentinel for a while but did not like them too much.

I am not one of those types of people who are afflicted with myopic reasoning and can only stomach that which I agree with 100%....... nor am I easily brainwashed into believing everything I read (or don't read, as in this case).

Having rented here since 2009, and owning for a year now, I am fully cognizant of the "everything is perfect and no criticism will be tolerated" crowd.

Just don't expect me to join them.

I value my intelligence and open mind......too much to ever do that. ;)

Not to minimize or make light of the accident but was the injury to your neighbor life threatening?

While the accident and injuries are certainly serious to the victim, and family, the first responders most likely are following a standard protocol as to how to classify the patient injuries for treatment and hospital notification. As a former firefighter/EMT I have been out of that field for over 14 years. But I do recall we had to rate a patient's injuries, which were based on accepted national trauma scores. We would also notify the hospital not only of the exact injuries but also our class of priority response from scene to the hospital. Of course all of this information was recorded in our reports and once submitted I have no idea who may have seen them.

Point I am trying to make is that the injuries might not have been seriously life threatening in the field but that does not diminish the seriousness of the injuries to the patient.
