View Full Version : Sakura False Advertising

We love sushi and go out once a week for it. We received a coupon book with an advertisement from Sakura advertising Sushi Happy Hour. By any item from the sushi menu and get a second on at half price. Wed - Sat 7:00-8:30.
My wife calle dot make sure this was right and she was told yes, if you order any sushi item you get a second one at half price.
So we waited until 7:00 tonight (we usually have dinner around 5:00-6:00) and headed over to Sakura. I order the Sushi Deluxe platter and my wife ordered the same thing and mentioned the Sushi Happy Hour. The waitress looked like she didn't know what we were talking about and I said that we saw an ad for Sushi Happy Hour. She said "Oh, I'll go get the special sushi menu." She came back with a very limited menu for Sushi Happy Hour. I was not interested in anything on that menu so I asked again if we could get two sushi deluxe platters and get one for half price. She said no, so we left. On the way out, I mentioned that I don't do business with businesses that lie in their advertising. I went elsewhere for my sushi.

Agree with your stand on this issue. The ad should have mentioned "limited sushi menu"

They don't allow discount coupons to be used with their Dinner Specials either.

Sounds like a very typical "bait 'n switch" scheme to me. If their disclaimers were not in their advertisement on the fine print on the coupon (albeit probably in very small print) they may be in violation of the law. You can file a report online with the FTC over bait 'n switch advertising.

Here is a link to their coupon. Don't know if you had a different coupon.
Sushi Happy Hour....Buy one sushi roll...get 2nd roll 50% off.

Below is an image of the coupon's offer that's being discussed here. On it you will see that it clearly states "Buy one sushi roll - get 2nd roll 50% off" I fail to see where Sakura was refusing to honor their offer or where there was any "bait & switch" going on as suggested. Seems like Sakura is wrongfully and undeservedly being given a bad rap here!

Where is there good sushi besides Sakura (which I don't care for anyway!) I'm dying for good sushi!!

The image of the coupon from Sakura seems to be extremely clear in it's wording. A sushi roll is definitely not the same as the sushi deluxe platter.

Disagree. When I go to a bar that has a happy hour I don't expect every drink to be included. Usually it is well drinks, house wine, and tap beer. The offer from Sakura seems pretty black and white to me, more so than a bar.

Finally a reasonable and responsible perspective on this Thread. Knew that was going to be the answer despite never having seen the ad. Sometimes common sense goes a long way.
By the way, in answer to another question. Good Sushi can be had at Fresh Market!

Sakura is the best and good prices ---- people should read the coupons carefully before making a stink

The coupon that has been posted is different from the coupon that I received. My coupon says buy any item from the Sushi menu and get a second sushi item at half price. Additionally, my wife called to verify that that was the case and was told that it was.
VKI in Lake Sumter Landing has very good sushi.

Sakura's sushi is very good but not the best in the area. Also, their prices are higher than some other places.

It says ONE sushi roll. I don't think this is misleading. To not go back to such a fantastic sushi place is a shame. You ask the waitress/waitor, "what does this exactly mean" and you take it from there. I think you are wrong here.

Apparently y'all have a hard time reading the OP. That is not the coupon he was referring to concerning the discount. Why would someone post a different coupon and claim it as the one he is referring to?
OK, I'm not into eating sushi but I guess I'm eating crow.

I'll say upfront, that my wife and I love Sakura and feel the service, food and value.....are outstanding.
Going there for lunch and then to Peachwave for dessert.... is one of our favorite things to do.

Do you still have the coupon? Perhaps if you take it there (next time you're in the vicinity) they can clarify a possible mistake or misunderstanding. At least you'll know for certain, regardless of whether you eat there again or not.

Good work. It is almost always like that when you investigate a complainer.

My guess would be because the OP did not show a coupon at all, so one can only assume the one posted is what he read. Like Friday said, The facts Mam, only the Facts.

My wife and I looked for the page with the coupon that we had and we evidently threw it away. But the FACT is that it wasn't the coupon that was posted here.
It is also a FACT that my wife called to verify and was told that for every sushi order, we could buy another sushi order of equal or less value for 1/2 price.
So if you want to talk about facts, talk about the fact that a coupon posted is not the one we had.

The sad thing is that I really liked Sakura as well. Their sushi is very good (not as good at VKI, but very good). Their prices are a bit high but no so high they would keep me away.
I was really excited to see it open at Bichara. We have gone there many times and when we saw the ad had planned on going there once a week for sushi happy hour.

Actually, I just found the ad. I was wrong. It does not say buy any sushi item and get another at 1/2 price. It doesn't have any specifics at all. The reason my wife called was to get the specifics and she was told that if we ordered any sushi item we could get another at half price. She even asked specifically, "if we buy a sushi boat we can get another at half price". The answer was yes.
So maybe it's not an issue of false advertising. It's an issue of being given wrong information by whoever answered the phone.

So if you want to talk about facts, talk about the fact that a coupon posted is not the one we had.No longer being able to produce the coupon, there are no facts to be discussed, just your word that your coupon was different than the one that could be produced. IMO, you are a good person and as such your word that it was different is more than good enough for me and I'm moving on! :ho:
Note: I hadn't seen the last two posts before posting my message above. Thanks Boogie for making things right!:clap2:

First of all, thanks for making the effort to post the original coupon.
So maybe it's not an issue of false advertising.
Now that all of the facts are out, I think that goes without saying.
It's an issue of being given wrong information by whoever answered the phone.Just as you found out that you were wrong in how a simple coupon was worded, could it be possible that your wife either misheard what was said...or that the question wasn't worded correctly?
A public apology to Sakura, for the wording of the thread......wouldn't hurt.
