The Boston Globe (http://www.bostonglobe.com/)
Although we loved getting THE VILLAGES DAILY SUN newspaper at our front door, this is our favorite of all time newspaper.

I especially like the Sunday edition........but it’s always a good read. Most especially today. CLICK ABOVE HYPERLINK for dramatic photos.

We always would get all of the major east coast big city newspapers and read them after church on Sundays.......while having a leisurely brunch....when our kids were still at home.

What newspapers did you all grow up with?

What newspapers do you recall your parents reading?

My husband and I grew up with The Columbus Dispatch, and then for forty years had the Cincinnati Enquirer and between the two read the Indianapolis Times for a few years.

They all had the same editorial/political slant as The Daily Sun.

It is all in what you are used to as far as political slant.

All major papers have the same sources for national news such as Associated Press, Reuters, and..I can't think of the third one.
Mc...?????

Now print journalism is not anywhere near the first source for most of us for news. Yesterday Senior, you were sending out news flashes and we were seeing them in real time on all three major television networks which had suspended programming to broadcast live from the scene in Boston. We are amazingly connected in this country.

Most East Coast cities have similar political slants to their newspapers and that feels familiar to people from that area and so The Daily Sun's is unfamiliar to them and irritating.

Did I avoid being political?

We're apolitical so the political slant doesn't matter one iota.
It's more the human interest stories and other sections of the newspaper that interest us. The Boston Globe always had great writers.......

I grew up reading all of the New York City newspapers as my dad would buy all the morning editions and evening editions plus the New Jersey papers where we lived.......he was a big newspaper reader......as was my Irish stepdad. There was no 24 hour t.v. news in those days.....so everyone looked forward to the newspapers.

p.s. Those postings of mine weren't necessarily for those glued to their t.v. sets as were all of us.......
.................but for those reading the news while traveling , etc. via their I-phones.....or tablets.

I was "sharing the hyperlinks to the breaking news" for people who were out and about, and particularly those from the Boston area or with ties to Boston , of which there are many.......as many of our connections either went to university in Boston or work in hospitals in Boston, etc.......or work in business there as well........so lots of folks in our neighborhood alone who have relatives and friends in Boston.........and I am pretty sure TV as well has their share of folks connected to Boston.

Our town is inviting the ones who did not finish the Boston Marathon to come and run in our race upcoming......

I believe my Aunt, who we lived with read the NY Sun which eventually went out of business. She then switched to the NY Herald Tribune. This is from my years during the 40's and 50's

The Air Force Times and the local paper where we were stationed.

Having spent the vast majority of my childhood going to base schools, I feel very fortunate to have experienced the diversity of that type of environment.

Speaking of which, one of the biggest drawbacks to TV that I've seen....is a palpable lack of diversity.

Maybe I'll even start a thread on it.

On the other hand, methinks it could get ugly very quickly. :(

The Cleveland Plain Dealer in the morning and the Cleveland Press at night. Remember when we would get an evening paper to read the news??? The Press went out a long time ago and I understand the Plain Dealer is suffering - young people don't read the paper - they get all their news onlline. Can't imagine not starting my day with a cup of coffee and the paper!

The New York Daily News, the DailyMirror and the Herald Tribune - all of which I remember my mother reading cover to cover.

The St. Petersburg Times, which is now the Tampa Bay Times. The paper won many Pulitzer Prizes and was considered one of the best small town newspapers in the country. I also read the Evening Independent and my first job was when I was 15 and was a scorekeeper for the men's softball leagues. I would have to write a story about the games which would appear in the Independent the next day. I would get a lot of players buying me hot dogs and soft drinks so I wouldn't forget their names.

It was also one of the reasons I became a Seminole Fan. In the 1960's when Steve Spurrier was a Heisman candidate and eventually a winner, the paper would feature pages and pages of blue and orange photos of the Gators and the lowly Seminoles would get a small caption story. Since I'm normally a fan of the underdog, I became a FSU fan about that time. In 1975 when Coach Bobby Bowden arrived on the scene in Tallahassee, the Gators because the lesser team throughout the 80's and much of the 90's as the Noles finished in the top 4 for many of those years and won two National Championships.

What amazes me is that we received both the morning and evening editions of the newspaper - most of the time, it was a slow news day so nothing changed. Today, my wife glues herself to the newspaper while I hunt and peck on the internet - a disjointed family. :)

Interestingly enough, my youngest son (who was born and raised in a place far, far away from Florida)...became a fan of FSU as a teenager during this period.

Having no other national college teams, much less professional teams, anywhere close...he rooted for FSU in every sport.

It was no surprise then, that after serving a tour in the Navy...he used the GI Bill to get his degree from FSU.

He even bought airline and game tickets to this years Orange Bowl....before the 'Noles even qualified for it.

Now THAT'S loyalty. :D

I remember both my parents did not read the paper very much as they were both born In Europe with a limited education. They seem to devote all of their time to making making money and being with friends. I really don't think they were political at all.

I remember the NY Daily News to be their paper of choice but that was because I bought it for myself. A great sports section even to this day. I usually get it, via the internet.

My parents read The Dubuque Iowa Telegraph Herald every morning, and on Sundays The Des Moines Register.

And if my dad gets his papers delivered late (after 8:00 am), he gets cranky and calls the paper.

And I am old enough to remember when the paperboy would come to the house to collect money for the subscriptions.

Chicago's Southtown Economist - it was delivered to every house in the hood and you only paid for it if you answered the door when the collection boy knocked.

Its popular slogan is "People Up North Just Don't Get It" (a pun - not available on Chicago's North Side)

Growing up in NYC, the house was always loaded with newspapers. Dad was a stockbroker, so he read the Wall Street Journal. On Sundays, it was the Daily News and New York Times. During the week, it was the Daily News in the mornings and Long Island Press in the afternoons. Our neighbor worked for the Herald Tribune, so that was frequently in the house. Throw in the Mirror (another tabloid) and World Telegram and Sun (which later merged with the Herald Tribune). Now, in NYC, a city of 9 million people, you've got the Times, Daily News and the New York Post (tabloid). Of course, the WSJ still exists, but the rest are but a memory. My favorite paper here in central Florida is the Orlando Sentinel.

We got the Evening Binghamton Press. I don't know how much it was read. Actually I think it was more "scanned" than read, although it seems that my mother read it religiously for the grocery store ads!

My wife and I also subscribed to it until we relocated to The villages, but every so often we would pick up the Sunday New York Times. It would take us the whole week to get through it all. and there was the crossword puzzle.
