I got a laugh out of Phyllis' column in the Daily Sun this morning. She actually said that the Tsarnaev family should not been admitted entry to the USA based on the name of their son, Tamerlan.

The "original" Tamerlan was a 14th century warlord whose armies killed millions of people.

Based on her logic, we should never admit a family to the USA if they have a relative named Adolf or Josef (Hitler or Stalin); and conversely should admit all families who have a family member named Jesus (very popular Hispanic name).

Phyllis is going on 89 years old and statements like that makes it look like the years have taken their toll on her.

The part about the name really wasn't laughable. I didn't agree with everything........

You know ageism is as offensive to some as any other form of prejudice. If her views are repugnant it is not because she is 89, it is because of her views. Jimmy Carter is 88 and by the way looked great and spoke well today at the opening of the Bush library.

If the parents knew that the name was the same as a 14th century war lord, why on earth did they name a newborn baby that....knowing he'd be saddled with that name for the rest of his life.

It's like naming a baby Attilla the Hun or Ghengis Khan.....

Joseph or Josef is a very common name in various naming traditions and was the Blessed Virgin Mary's spouse...........so no one really thinks of Stalin when one is named Joe or Joseph..........but Tamerlan?

Perhaps you missed the point. If the family named him Tamerlan knowing the history of the original Tamerlan, then perhaps their intent was to groom him for the same war-like behavior. The name should at least send up a red flag to call for a through investigation. Especially due to the fact that he came from an area dominated by Muslims.

Anyway, I think the overall point of the column was perfectly sound. We need to be more cautious. Does anyone doubt that?

The column was very sound and had the OP even quoted or put it in context the meaning changes quite a bit. I surely do not agree with all, but it seems that a discussion of an oped should begin with truthful presentation of said op ed.

Instead of looking for substance, it appears some of the poster just wanted to make personal comments about the authors age and reference to her as a "dingbat"

I would agree with you IF the only point being made was about the name....it was NOT the only point and I sure hope folks read a bit better than it seems they do based on this thread.

Yes, I am serious. Of course, it assumes that the people involved are familiar with important names in history as the column writer obviously is. If she knows history, shouldn't those in charge of letting people into this country know their history too?

This was the point of the oped, and I do not think she did a particulary good job at presenting it, but she does not deserve to be taken apart personally on here because of her age and any other personal slams that have been aimed at her.

Once again, TOTV has been educational. I had no idea Phyllis Schlafly had a column, and that it was published in the Daily Fun. I have no dislike of Phyllis because of her age. However, she is known for her opposition to feminism. For that, I wouldn't read her column, and the fact that the Daily Fun publishes that type of backward thinking, places it on my "do not read" list. They also publish that hate monger Ann Coulter. Ugh!

I often learn more by reading those I "think" I oppose for sure. Without knowing that you limit yourself in a very big way, however may I ask what part of this particular quote from the article you might disagree with....

In my mind, Ms Schlafly lost her credibility many years ago with her inane views on women's rights. Her comments on the Violence Against Women Act were something along the lines of "it shouldn't be enacted because it promotes divorce and hatred of men". Such wisdom, NOT. I don't waste my time reading the views of people I don't consider intelligent.

This thread is hopelessly off track of the original topic about a column in today's paper. Personal attacks, name calling, and political statements render it unwieldy to clean up, hence it will be closed.

The admin has opened the door to allow discussion of current events topics as long as they stay away from name calling, partisan references, overt political topics, personal attacks, and extreme rants. Sadly, few of these threads seem to last more than a few hours before they degrade beyond repair.

It's unfortunate that we can't discuss important topics with respect and civility.
