IMHO reasonable Murphy beds is an oxymoron. I have seen them in the 1-2000 dollar range but still find that high.

the places all around the villages just keep raising the prices of everything. The murphy beds at the place you went to was charging $3800. two years ago. I know because I purchased one then.

We found that a reasonably done murphy bed (better looking than glorified pasteboard and with a comfortable mattress) would cost about $4800 installed. We average, maybe, 14 nights of guests a year. At that rate we can treat our guests at a good motel for about $110 a night for 3 years. If after 3 years we have any friends left, we will put them up on one of those $100 deluxe blow up queen size mattresses and not have one of those murphy bed monstrosities plugging up the room.

I got my wall bed for $2600. Queen size with a couple of nice side cabinets. I bet the bed you are looking at for $6800 has a ton of cabinets or maybe a desk designed in there somewhere. Just a wall bed by itself wont cost $6800

I want the kind of wall bed that the Marx Brothers had - one that slams shut with guest inside!

No it wasn't just the bed itself for 6800. When you walk in the store, it's the first one on left hand side. It had bed, some side drawers, cabinet and yes a desk of course with drawers but I still think 6800 is crazy. I like the post about comparing it to putting your guests in a hotel !! lol that was cute idea.

Problem is, after a few days they may give off an unpleasant odor.:0000000000luvmyhors

I was thinking about getting a murphy bed but after reading this I'm reconsidering. maybe a nice trundle daybed would fit my needs with the hotel option always available

Look outside of the villages for stores that sell those beds. I am sure you will find them at a lower price.

Don't know if this will help, but I have seen them listed on Craig's List (new & used).

We ran into a great deal on a queen Murphy bed with bookcase/drawer units on each side that was in the Leesburg paper's classified ads. Hubby did quite a bit of work to get it dis-assembled, moved here, re-finished with sealer, then cut down and installed in our third bedroom/office. We'd been checking the papers and Ocala Craig's list frequently, just dumb luck finding this. My sis likes it better that the regular bed in the other spare room. Good luck, hope you can find a good deal somewhere.

Can you tell me name of the place you bought your Murphy bed?
Thank you
Joanne

Some years ago we bought a used full-sized wall bed for $300. in south FL. Just the mechanism and the mattress. We had a company build an enclosure for it for $900. It worked great. We sold it to a neighbor last year after listing it on Craig's list, and had calls about it for two months afterward. The Murphy Bed Co. at that time wanted $3500 - $4000.

I saw the plans and hardware at Rockler, maybe you could hire someone in the wood workers club to build you a simple one.

We had horizontal ones in the lake cabins we rented out when I was a kid.
My dad and his handy man/carpenter buddy build them.

If you altered the plan a bit to use Ikea cabinet doors as the doors are a lot of the labor in the project as I remember, maybe it wouldn't be a big deal.
Maybe I am remembering it that way as my job was to do all the sanding and after the 8th one I felt like I had been sanding doors all summer.

Don't know just a thought.

Buy a copy of the Orlando paper in the supermarket. You will see people who advertise those beds and many other things. They are usually not located in the bubble and you may find a better deal.
