I just found out this afternoon that the LSV ( Low Speed Vehicle Law ) has passed and its up to our Governor to sign the bill into law. Congratulation to Marlene O'Toole and her staff, she has been working on this bill for a long time.

I have no idea what this bill is either. Anyone care to explain?

this might be the one where lsv owners can convert their vehicle to a golf cart - thus not requiring insurance...but i think they have to give back the tax benefit they got when they bought the lsv if they choose to convert.

Sorry, this is the bill that will let the owners convert their LSV back to a golf cart. They will not have to give any money back they received from the
Government if they qualified for the money.

Why would anyone expect them to give the money back??? What if they sold the vehicle and the next guy converted it. Geez.

What is the cost to convert the motor to a golf cart motor?

No need to change the motor, it would just need to be governed down to the max golf cart speed. On my LSV the controller can be programmed to make the change. I like having an LSV, no plans to convert it to a golf cart.

Today in the Daily Sun on page 1 there is a picture of a LSV. Up to 3000lbs.

While I might enjoy seeing two wedged in a tunnel.... I hope I'm not on a multi-modal path when one goes by in each direction next to me. I hope nobody gets hurt because this bill passed. I also wonder what damage they will do to the golf courses. The rules state they must be less than 1500 lbs. curb weight to be on a Villages fairway. I think my carts weight about 600 lbs. each. Who going to check the tires? They don't check them on golf carts anymore.

Read the story. I don't even want to think about the kids driving 3000lb. LSV on the paths and roads.

My 4 seat GEM is like the one on the front page of the Daily Sun today, it has a curb weight of 1270 lbs and has golf course tires, so no issues on the course. It is 55 inches wide though. So far I have been able to negotiate through the smaller tunnels with carts passing by without incident but do it very cautiously. I don't take it on the golf cart bridge over 441 and only use the path on the Morse Bridge if I want to park and see the sunsets as it is really narrow. Never any issues on the Multi-Modal paths as they are mostly wider, the narrow paths are on streets that mostly have 25 MPH speed limits so I stay in the street. The one cart path that is really bad is the one through the hedges that leads to the Wood Shop...I have met golf carts on it in the past and we just squeezed through, had I met up with another GEM Cart one of us would have had to back out I suspect.

Thanks JD! Frank at Sta-rite will be able to reprogram Tomberlin carts. Cost ~$100.00. Law takes affect 1 Jul. 2013. Plan on having mine done next time I'm @ TV.

....although the Gem car can go on the multimodal paths, is the structure and materials for the multimodal path sufficient to hold up to these if there are many that use them?

Looks to me like they want their cake and to eat it too. First they get a tax break for buying it. Then they decide they don't want to pay the associated fees. Now they convert it back and get to keep the tax break. Only in America!

I thought the bill said the LSV had to be converted to a golf cart? I guess we will have to wait and see the exact wording.

Tax break was available to anyone wanting to buy a LSV. If I remember correctly, the tax credit (2010 I think) was around $5,000---a little more or less depending on the cart you purchased. The various dealers charged an average of $2,500-$3,000 MORE for the cart and made out "big time" as about the only difference I saw was safety belts. The one I looked at had the same motor but was geared slightly different to get it up to 25mph. In order to get insurance---about $1000---$1200 per year---another "rip off" IMHO. Bottom line---the "deal" was pretty much another government boondoggle. However, for those that wanted or needed an LSV when the tax break was offered it was a good time to buy one. Remember, not everybody lives in TV, although sometimes it may seem that way!

Are the people who purchased the LSV and recieved a $5,000 tax credit going to have to return the tax credit? It was not a deduction it was a credit. Doesn' seem quite fair.
