JODI ARIAS VERDICT WATCH: JURY DELIBERATING ARIAS’ FATE
Now that the jury has gone home for the weekend.........and will not return to deliberate again until Monday.......
Who thinks Jodi Arias will be charged with Felony Murder and get lethal injection as the death penalty?
Who thinks the jury will agree on a verdict of manslaughter which could be 20 years???
Who thinks it will be a hung jury or a mistrial?
Who had the stronger closing argument: Juan Martinez, the Prosecutor or Kirk Nurmi, the Defense Attorney?

Who is Jodi Arias?
She is the defendant in the media's 2013 trial version of OJ and Casey Anthony circus.

She seems so much like Casey Anthony.
Has anyone reading this forum ever known any one in real life that was a pathological liar?
I haven't.
I learned a lot from this trial about Mormon dating practices.
I truly am ignorant about a lot of stuff having to do with other peoples religions..
I wish I could take a course on the religions of the world that wouldn't be biased.

Neither Jodi Arias nor Travis Alexander seemed like any LDS* members I've ever known (Latter Day Saints* also known as Mormons)...
I wouldn't take their "dating practices" at face value.
They had a love / hate relationship of a compulsive explosive nature.
Supposedly he was a Bishop in his church but had his own weird set of rules.........in his personal life. Also, towards the end he was seeking a pure Mormon girl to become his wife........with tainted Jodi left in the lurch. I don't condone murder in any shape or form.......I do think it was a crime of passion and self defense after she dropped the camera and he became violently angry.............I do not think it was premeditated.
But, who knows for sure? My husband wants her to get lethal injection.
I think she will serve life in prison. A waste of both lives.
They were toxic together..........to me it sounded like she was always trying to please him..........she should have moved on........and wouldn't have been in this predicament. Travis would be alive today.
Our daughter had a very nice family of Mormons as neighbors; the husband worked at Norwich University for many years until they decided to return out west; they still keep in touch. All four of the children were very friendly and kind. The mom was a good friend to my daughter and we'd all be together when we'd go up for the children's birthdays.........
They dressed conservatively, but then Vermont is conservative anyway.
They were just like you and I..........or anybody else for that matter.
No different.........
They do believe in stockpiling food for emergencies........no harm in that.
Joseph Smith actually was born in Vermont..........
Joseph Smith - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Joseph_Smith&printable=yes)
Other LDS members I've known are via ancestry.com.....
They've always been extremely polite and helpful.
The young members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are NOTHING like Jodi Arias and Travis Alexander.......
They are cleancut, helpful to a fault.......and will politely explain their doctrine if you ask.......not forceful in anyway...
They might seem "naive" compared to some young folks today. Perhaps all of that rigidity in remaining "pure" has some effect on some in going down the wrong road sexually, such as Travis and Jodi. When something is forbidden, people seem to want it more.....or think about it more.
With regard to LDS that I knew, when I challenged their "baptism by proxy" in which they take the names of our ancestors (who've already been baptised in other faiths such as Roman Catholicism) and carry them "by proxy" as names on a white sheet of paper to be re baptized in the Mormon church.......they explained in a polite way that they just feel everyone is entitled to enter the kingdom of heaven.......they have strong beliefs but are not pushy. Hard to explain. I've never met one that I didn't like personally. Helpful, kind folks......
The young men who would come to our door are very polite, neat and well spoken..........always nice.
We miss our daughter's neighbors who now live in Utah.....and they miss Vermont..........
I think Travis' position on a lot of things was "twisted" and Jodi , in her own "twisted" way, trying to please him, got hooked.......
He ended up dead..........something went terribly wrong.
He seemed quite affluent for a younger guy.....but that business was actually like a pyramid scheme if you paid attention at the beginning of the trial..............
Re Casey Anthony , I recently read the full psychiatric report by many psychiatrists..........and she was abused by her father from a young age.........which accounts for her not living in total reality.
It's common among children who were molested as children....
She's another one whose life is ruined.........however, I do believe the child died in the swimming pool........she was tried in the media due to Florida's "sunshine laws" of full disclosure........in the end, the prosecution could not PROVE to the jury that she killed her child. Supposedly, the child drowned and George "took care of it." This is why he attempted suicide. But, again, just what I've read.........who knows for sure. Only God knows..........
If Jodi Arias is acquitted, look for a new satellite orbiting Earth in the night sky!

Will never happen. She will get either LIFE or LETHAL INJECTION.
Life in an Arizona prison will not be a picnic, that's for sure.
I recently read of a female inmate in Arizona who had been "forgotten" in an outside exercise cage........and you know how HOT it gets in Arizona in the summertime.............

I guess you are missing the fact that the constitution guarantees a trial before your peers to determine if you are guilty of a crime. Arias attempted a plea bargain of second degree which was turned down by the state who wants a conviction of first degree. Can't happen without a trial.

It is not a matter of guilty or innocent.
After three different stories, she finally admitted that she had killed Travis. So, she is guilty of murdering Travis.
She said it also during the trial. The jury knows that she killed Travis.
It's a death penalty case.
The prosecution (the state of Arizona) claims it was premeditated murder which is first degree felony murder.
The defense claims she killed Travis in self defense after he attacked her when she dropped his new camera in the shower.....she claims she killed him rather than be killed herself, by him, in his violent rage.
That would be manslaughter or some lesser murder charge.
So, it's either death penalty by lethal injection which might take twelve or more years with many appeals.........
Or.......it is manslaughter or some other lesser type of murder.
That would save her life.......and "perhaps" she'd get out in 20 years.
I've heard different versions by different attorneys.
You'd have to go back and listen to what the judge has said or "will say" once the verdict is read and/or the sentencing happens.
Juan Martinez, the Prosecutor, kept pushing for Felony Murder.....as the state believes it was premeditated (due to the gas cans, the theft of the gun, etc.)
All along the state has said she was stalking Travis; his friends claim it was like the movie FATAL ATTRACTION.

Its not my "thing" to follow these so called "sensation trials" but it seems a lot of time and taxpayer money would have been saved with a second degree plea bargain. Not to mention the long long appeal process if there is a conviction. Of course, we wouldn't have all the television drama and that would be a disappointment, huh?

I agree that justice will be served. In this case interest is stimulated by media looking for ratings. She's been made into a celebrity, just as OJ and Casey Anthony were by the media. What will follow the trial will probably be a book and a made for TV movie. Can you see Lindsey Lohan playing the role. Just needs glasses a brunette dye job.

I admit I try not to follow these trials too much. The Casey Anthony trial absolutely broke my heart...I became obsessed with it.
What I don't understand why people buy the books or watch the movies or TV interviews in the first place. Criminals, that are convicted in the Court System should not be made celebrities. Nor should their lawyers.
Sure wish Lindsay Lohan would quietly go away...wishful thinking I guess.

Could this be another act by Ms Arias? She said in an interview yesterday that she would rather die than spend the rest of her life in jail.

She used the media again (in yesterday's interview) to take charge of the agenda. Court to resume May 16, probably after a Psych Assessment. Has she succeeded in persuading people that she is too nutty to be punished?

Jodi's defense attorneys have filed a motion to have the Victim Impact Statements by the Travis' family and friends on video instead of live. So the Jury won't be impacted by "excess emotion". Apparently it's a normal motion which is often filed by Defense and denied. But wouldn't you think if Jodi really wants the death penalty, she would welcome live statements!!
Now Jodi is on Suicide Watch, where she is being continually monitored and interviewed by doctors to assess her condition. Again she gets to be the center of attention, at taxpayer's expense. What a piece of work!

Jodi Arias has now been convicted by the Jury of first degree murder with premeditation and cruelty. The Jury now has to decide whether to give her a death sentence or a sentence of life in prison. If the Jury decides on life, the Judge could conceivably decide on life with parole. Which could possibly mean that Jodi would be released into society in 20 years, at the age of 52.
After two hours of deliberation, the Jury returned to say they were deadlocked and could not be unanimous about a life or death sentence. The Judge gave them some ideas for resolving their impasse and told them to continue deliberating. If they cannot reach an unanimous verdict on sentencing, then a new Jury has to be chosen for the sentencing portion, and brought up to speed on all the details.
The family of the victim has sat in court since January listening to details of how their brother was murdered. He was shot in the head, stabbed 29 times, and his throat was slit. I feel so sorry for the family of the victim.

I'm so tired of the television networks making criminals into celebrities. People actually watching this like a daily soap-opera is the reason it goes on, and people are hooked on it.
The networks are getting a free soap-opera script without paying writers, actors and other production costs. Keep on watching it, and keep on enabling the networks to feed this stuff to young people.

I agree with this to some extent. I would like to see a form of punishment for particularly heinous and premeditated murder as was the verdict in this case.
I’d call it something like “isolated life in prison without parole”. It would be mostly the equivalent of the death row with no contact with other prisoners, 2 hours outside alone in a courtyard three times a week. And like Texas’ death row, no TVs or radios.
The problem with the system right now is that even though every juror on this case said they would not have a problem with a sentence of death, now that it comes down to it, at least one juror is having second thoughts. And I have to believe that this person(s) is having thoughts about being in a store and overhearing two people whispering “hey, isn’t that so and so, you know, one of the jurors that condemned Jodi Arias to death”
But if the jury ends up deadlocked, I believe the prosecutor will likely offer a plea bargain to Aries to accept life without parole and I know that her attorneys want out of this case ASAP.

The Defense attorneys definitely want this case over. But I think the Prosecutor is too invested in this trial to accept any verdict other than death. EdV, I hope you're right.

My heart goes out to Travis' siblings who have appeared in court every day since January, putting their lives on hold. They have had to listen to horrific details about the murder of their brother, while looking every day at the woman who murdered him. And Jodi is loving the notoriety and being in the spotlight.
With four jurors voting against death this time, chances don't look great for getting an unanimous death verdict next time. I really hope that the Prosecutor and Travis' family agree to offer a plea bargain to the Defense of "life in jail with no parole". Travis' family is emotionally shattered and will pay a huge emotional price if the Court goes through another penalty trial with a new Jury. They deserve some peace.

What seems to be cut a dry always seems to turn out different based on how much money is avail to pay the defense lawyers.
Our court system has been spun and twisted so that defendants are not assured a fair trail if they have money or backers. They are then allowed to lie, cheat and whatever else it takes to GET OFF.
The more bizare the case, the more it is loved by the media; hence, more money available to prolong the case until they GET OFF.

Any way we could change this situation? Smarter --as in better educated in the ways of the law-- jurors? I believe strongly in the right to a fair trial but as you seem to imply when money and TV ratings based on advertising points for ads and the like impact on judicial system, fair trials look like the farthest journey for survivors/victims of defendants to take. Ban TV from these type of trials? That sounds unconstitutional.

Jodi is a good example of why we should get the media OUT of the courtrooms. Fine, have someone report later, but she played it like a tune.
Also, HLN having 4 - repeat 4 - hours of rehashing the day, each and every night? Gosh, will be surprised if that isn't brought up on appeal.
Wonder what the jurors will be thinking now that they are excused from duty and can view all of her interviews ("I want to die") and find out things that they weren't able to see otherwise.
