Why do you believe that there are substantially more members who view a thread rather than reply to one?

some people just prefer to discuss the Weather or accidents in the villages etc... rather than get into a topic which some may agree or disagree and have some intellectual conversation to actually discuss. I'd much rather discuss what is actually going on in the world rather than what did you have for dinner. So much more interesting and stimulating.

Sometimes I'm interested in the topic but really don't have anything constructive to say or any interest in contributing to the discussion

it would not matter what the subject matter or the group or the class or the mebership...the total of those who participate is always a significantly smaller number that those who do not.

Pareto's law/rule/principal.......80-20......

TOTV has thousands of members and only hundreds of posters out of which even a smaller number can be viewed as active.

Very typical distribution.

I will respond to something....read it....re-read it, and 50% of the time, delete before I post. ....I wish I could do the same with my mouth.

Fear of rejection for their ideas.

Bingo! I think fear of rejection is a major factor for some but others prefer to be "spectator's" as opposed to "player's". Then some are like me and sort of in the middle. It's nice to have both---no?

Usually, its because the question or issue has already been answered and my response would add nothing to the discussion.

yes that is understable also. some will read what interests them or just want to see if they have anything to add

Some of us have not moved to TV and are just viewing to learn all we can about TV before making our decision. It helps to inform us of things to do, where to eat, and what to stay away from.

At least once a day I read the new posts and often I don't even log on. For almost six years TOTV has been a valuable source of information, however I hardly post since I prefer to keep out of the fray.

No... It's nice to have all three!

I think that the reasons include/not limited to:

Fear of getting ripped for their thoughts

Have nothing new or substantive to add to a topic

Neither need to nor want to state what would be an obvious response

Have an idea about what a correct answer might be but are not 100% sure, so they defer until a more knowledgable source chimes in

They simply enjoy being entertained by the various totv goings-on (goings-ons? goingses-on? goingses-ons? eh... forget it) ;)

Not intentionally hijacking the topic but a new boo-boo?

Got details to share, unless of course you prefer to maintain your HIPPA privacy rights :)

I think it also has a lot to do with those who are not bandwagon jumpers, concerned with getting run over by the bandwagon.

A lot of people prefer to avoid conflict and they believe, usually correctly, that if they voice a view counter to the power clique here...they will be attacked.

I have already experienced where some people will lie directly to you in PM's and/or stalk...to try and find out info about you. ;)

That's enough to creep out and scare a lot of good folks away from participating.

I'm not that smart though. :D

And of the thousands of members, they are only a small percent of Villagers and wannabees. Not very representative--of TV, anyway. And members seem to come and go, not be heard from again. Lost interest, maybe?

I've been reading this forum since early 2011 when I first became interested in The Villages. It has been a fabulous source of information, and I am now closing in July on the new house my wife and I are having built in Fernandina. I view this forum as a source of information. However, I do not want to give my opinion about something in the Villages regarding a topic that is merely my opinion and not based upon any clear factual understanding.

Swampy, welcome to your new home! You may not want to comment on things TV related due to lack of experience here, but we would welcome your opinion on the many other items we "debate" on this forum. To cite a few: should you pick up after your dog/allow him on other people's yards, who is allowed to ride bicycles where, who should be allowed to drive a car and why, what fertilizer to use and when...

Feel free to speak up! We love a new voice.

As a post-script to my earlier comment: I find the posts about dog waste to be mostly hilarious, and I find the posts complaining about bike riders, slow carts and lost or confused cart and car operators to be sad. "Can't we all just get along" said someone once. As an aside: the difference between the way a dog thinks vs. the way a cat thinks - As a result of a dog's owner feeding the dog, disposing of the dog's waste products, caring for the dog's health and giving the dog love, the dog thinks to himself, "this person must be my God and I will worship him". The cat on the other hand, when faced with the same devotional care, thinks, "I am this person's God and he must worship me"! (P.S. I love both types of animals).
