If you would look at the entertainment budget which no one can, i am sure from may-sept. you would see a dramatic drop-off. Crowds are much smaller, less income from bar huts, and whatever the businesses in the squares contribute drops off because their sales are a lot less. Once we get to oct. you will all the good bands more often. They still are at katie bells like tonight rocky and the rollers and happy hour all night. They still will have a full house tonight, even in the slow time.

I have to agree with the observation that things have changed. The entertainment at the squares has been poor at best over the last 4-5 months. Barbra Vesco has bought the business and since then lots has
changed.
I wrote her an email this morning outlining what my perspective has been over the period. Many people I have talked to have express the same concerns. I may suggest others do the same. I do not think my note was
a complaint because I have wrote her notes in the past praising her work.
I felt there was a change and I wanted to point it out. Good luck.

The bands have been terrible lately. I've seen a huge difference in the five years I've lived here. The other night at Sumter there was only about 10 people on the square by 8 pm. There was a mass exodus around 7. We were wondering if those left were relatives.
Tonight the Dan Story Band is playing at Sumter. They are one of the exceptions lately. If you can, come down and check this band out.

They are on the typical business downhill slide.
1. Need to make better margin so cut the quality and cost of the product. (bands not as good)
2. Volume has dropped so make more cuts. (less people at the square spending money)
3. Another drop in quality so people stop coming altogether. (use DJ's only)
4. Bankrupt. (stop the entertainment as nobody comes any more)

I happen to think the bands are still mighty good. Sure, there are some dogs like Garrett Miles but plenty of great ones like Uncle Bob and the Rockshop.
Yesterdayze is another excellent band.

What is a "good band"? I think we all may have different ideas as to what is "good".

My take on it is that TV is wanting to attract more people who are now in their 60's so their music is not the same as our music of the 50's /60's. As a possible compromise, perhaps each town square could be "home" to bands o different decades and then on occasion rotate around. It seems that many of us (70's +) are missing the old R&R that was playing more a few years ago and I for one have a difficult time relating to the music of the 80's and 90's which means that we don't go up to the square as often as I'd like.
It seems that the movies that are at the Rialto appeal more to our generation than the ones at Sumter and Brownwood and that seems to work. Perhaps the "older bands" could be at SS more and the "younger" ones could be at Brownwood and then rotate through Sumter. Just an idea.

See, I wasn't lying. I'm glad you came down to see this great band! The DSB will be playing next week at SS. If you haven't checked them out, you need to see for yourself.

Since the Villages sold the entertainment division to Barbara Vesco it's been all downhill. It has nothing to do with the snowbirds leaving. We have no more parades and the holiday celabrations stink. The Villages sells its properties for a hefty sum advertising that "you're buying into a lifestyle" yet our lifestyle is slowly going downhill.

My understanding is nothing was sold to Barbara Vesco, but that she manages it. Could be wrong - wouldn't be the first time or probably the last!

I believe you are correct, but like you, I am not sure. It is tough to get any information out of them.

Vinyl Recall is made up of 4 TOTV Forum members and will be playing at Tierra del Sol Saturday, May 11 from 5:30 - 8:30. Come on out and enjoy the music and say hi to us. We would love to meet all of you! Make reservations!
I agree with the bands quality not being what it once was. What ever happened to Norman and The Boondock Saints? I thought they were one of the better bands, as are Yesterdayz, Uncle Bob's Rock Shop and Rocky and The Rollers. But none of these mentioned bands are as busy working the squares as they once were. Norman Lee is almost invisible. And Three For The Road is just beginning to get recognition.
I do know Doug's band "Vinyl Recall" would love a shot at playing in the squares. For those who have seen them at Tierra del Sol would agree and for those who haven't seen them check them out on Saturday night.

Will "Three For The Road" be playing anywhere in TV from May 16 through May 25? Will "Vinyl Recall" be playing at Tierra del Sol on May 18 and/or May 25 or any other days from May 16-25? Love to hear live music...

The #1 reason we chose The Villages over the many other retirement communities we considered WAS that there is music at the squares EVERY night. We absolutely love to be able to sit in a lawn chair, have a drink, listen to music and talk to our friends (and even people we don't know!).
It's wonderful to have music at the squares every night. It makes all the difference to us. :coolsmiley:

Hey Schaumburger!
Thanks for the interest. Sorry, but May 18 we are going to Orlando to see Paul McCartney and the 25th we have 60 of my wife's family coming to TV for a family reunion. Think I am going to need a few more blow up beds.

3 For the Road will be at City Fire in Brownwood on Sunday, 5/19, from 8 to 11; Evans Prairie Country club from 6 to 9 on both Tuesday 5/21 and Saturday 5/25. Hope you can come and see us. If you do, please introduce yourself. I'm the short guy in the middle.

Bill, Thank you for the info. I haven't back been to The Villages since last October, so City Fire in Brownwood and Evans Prairie Country Club were not open yet. Gives me even more reasons to visit Brownwood and Evans Prairie when I get back to TV at the end of next week!

It's great having "real" bands perform in the squares instead of so many of the karaoke/DJ-style entertainers! Uncle Bob's Rock Shop, 3 For The Road, Sugar Bear Band are all awesome!

I hate to say it, but I do think it may be a generation thing. I have been visiting my Mom in the Villages for over 12 years, but more recently I have found the bands to be better...this is good because we are moving in next week! Perhaps in another 10-15 years we won't care for the music either...such is life!

You have a treat in store for you. Don't forget the Farmers Market on Saturday mornings in Brownwood. Rocky and The Rollers were scheduled one night at Brownwood, I bet the place was rocking that night.
