We are moving to The Villages next month from the Detroit area where there were 400 murders in 2012!
Will we feel safer in The Villages you ask? duh

We are from te other side of MI, over on the lake at Muskegon. In TV I walk my dog after dark every night because it is cooler for him. I would NOT do that in Muskegon. I feel very, very safe in TV.

I've felt safe every where I've lived. I really can't say the Villages make me feel safer.

I feel safer.
No loud music, no rowdy teens in the mall, no empty houses during work hours, etc
My sister asked us if we were going to install a security system here in The Villages.
I replied , no.
But I am curious:
Do you have a security system of any sort installed here in TV?
What about a more secure lock for the glass slider leading to the lanai?

I feel safer but I am always aware of my surroundings.
I am just a wannabee...I live in a fairly safe (but not crime free suburb of Chicago). I do feel safe when visiting The Villages, which is important as a single female. One of the reasons that TV is attractive to me as a future home is the feeling of safeness I get here...sort of like living in Dubuque, IA where I was born and raised. But as Happinow posted, one always needs to be aware of one's surroundings.

We moved here because the crime rate in TV is the lowest we found on the East Coast. Violent crime is almost unheard of. Driving in the roundabouts & speeding cart carts , maybe not the safest part of TV.:crap2:

The only concern I have with safety in TV is the amount of elderly that carry Guns. That increases the chance of a fatal accident some, but still safer than the majority of large cities.

Interesting thought but I am curious where is the information showing how many folks in TV carry guns and when has someone had a fatal accident with said gun?

When we lived in Palm Harbor next door we had a house that was rented by a Criminal Defense lawyer who seemed to put his clients in as tenants. Some of these people and families were OK; some not so much. Think it depends on the circumstances of where you lived before moving to the Villages.
Others places we have lived seemed safe but I had a stalker while working at the U of MN Law Library who followed my girlfriend home when I was away for Christmas break. The stalker Gail P. was a women with serious mental problems who fixated on various employees of the University of Minnesota and had previous to me gravitated towards a professor and then chained herself to his desk like he was a tree that needed to be saved.
The U of MN could not do much of anything with this stalker but it certainly gave my then girlfriend quite a lot to worry about. The stalker later followed me home and I guess the University did something as she stop appearing at the library soon after that.
She would sit and stare at me for a number of hours while I worked at the Reference desk.
I also lived in Reno. Nevada for a long time and quite a lot happened during that period of my life.
Comparable to Reno, NV, Palm Harbor and some people at the U of Minnesota Law School and Library; the Villages has been very peaceful and safe.

Good Point. We lived that last 20 plus years in Atlanta Georgia and Washington D.C. and I find TV a lot more friendly but not really safer. In those locations we had a fair amount of purpose committed crimes, where here, due to the age of our population we have a fair amount of violent accidents.

I love Reno.
We lived there in the early 60's, when my Dad was stationed at Stead AFB (long since closed)...and I've been back numerous times.
For a young kid, it didn't get much better than having a root beer in The Bucket of Blood or spending Friday/Saturday nights watching the dirt track racers at Lemon Valley Speedway (also long gone).
A lot of people don't know of the plethora of activities that are close to Reno.
From Lake Tahoe, to Lake Lahonton, to Virginia City.....there's plenty to do on the weekends. :coolsmiley:
As to feeling safe in TV, we feel as safe here...as any place we've ever lived.

I have felt safe everywhere I've lived too.
Well, maybe not when I had an apartment in NYC so much.
I feel much safer in T.V. then even in Tampa (suburbs).
Thanks for the interesting stats!

We bring with us the feelings of our old places.
In my opinion, this is as safe as any place in this country.
but...I am a grown up with grown up skepticism about any situation.
Fortunately, none of us were born yesterday or fell off the turnip truck.

Personally since more people are injured and killed by alcohol related incidents than guns, I am more worried about my safety in TV than I was living in NYC and NJ. No one seems to want to give up drinking to save lives. Why is that? At least guns provide protection and sport. Alcohol does not and yet look what happened the last time it was banned. No one really wants to save lives if it inconveniences them personally but are more than willing to ban things they have no interest in. This is a basic truth of life.

where are you moving from/to? We just purchased a home in Sanabel and currently live in Farmington Hills.
I feel extremely safe in the villages. I think my neighbors in the villages are more aware of whats going on in our neighborhood than my "up north" neighbors that have kids, jobs, etc. to worry about and occupy their minds.

I loved Reno too. Seemed that was one of the best periods of my life. I earned two B.A.s at the University of Nevada, Reno in December of 1980 and May of 1981 and had started work on two MAs also but changed my direction and left for Brigham Young University's Law School in 1982. Only liked the library work at BYU so dropped out of BYU after a week to go to the University of Denver to get a MA in Librarianship.
I worked for a partnership while in college that had concessions at Idlewild Park (softball diamonds), Slide Mountain (ski training for kids) and at Bowers Mansion. I babysat a large number of girls who were daughters of girlfriends of the partnership owners and worked at some of these places where I was an Assistant Manager.
On the darker side though I attended Earl Wooster High School from 1973 through 1976 and had a teacher who made a huge impression on me and turned me on to books like Anna Karenina. This was Mrs. Barbara Mitchell who taught English at Wooster while her husband taught English at Hug. On 2-24-1976 their daughter Michelle Mitchell was murdered by three people in a conspiracy to make it look like a serial killer was stalking the Reno, NV, community. They had murdered a person they had some kind of life insurance interest in a few days before but used a different MO in the two killings. The cops never connected the two cases and the conspirators were not caught until 1979 when one of them bragged about killing a girl in Reno. This "confession" was in a Louisiana jail.
2-24-1959 is my birthday and Mrs. Mitchell as well as her family seemed to take a special interest in me because of this.
I would often run into fellow Wooster High grads who would want to talk about the Michelle Mitchell investigation and so forth and this found me looking in libraries all around Reno for materials that might help answer their questions, qualms, fears, etc. I never found much of anything and made it a mission to try to improve the materials accessible in libraries for those who might need this kind of information. I found very little of practical use at various law libraries I searched in as well like those of BYU, the University of Denver, Arizona State U., and the University of Minnesota Law Library. I have been a little too critical about this niche for my own good quite often however to the detriment of my career.
One of my fellow Philosophy students at UNR had been stabbed six times in the heart area and was dead for a few minutes. This was Tom Snow. Cannot recall the exact date of this but events like Michelle Michell's murder as well as the attempted murder of Tom Snow kind of discolored my image of Reno. Tom survived though his ordeal but lost a lot of his long term memory because of the loss of oxygen to his brain.
As you can imagine the Michelle Mitchell case was covered extensively for at least 4 years or so in the Northern Nevada media. It certainly had a long term impact on my choices and such. I got a JD from the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities in 1989 and had worked as a Student Director in a Legal Clinic for Prisoners at Minnesota Correctional Facilities. So, I saw both sides of Criminal Law while a law student-- defendants' and the state.
I did get encouragement from some U of MN law professors about my work helping survivors/victims of crimes get access to practical information but also was met with some very underhanded tactics from others.

I felt safe until I discovered the prowler next door. He is a frequent visitor of my neighbor and I've seen him emerge between the houses across the street in the very early morning hours several times. Sheriff was notified, came and warned him. So we'll see if he does it again. Who knows where he goes or what he does? So, no, I don't feel so safe anymore.

I feel safer in regard to home invasions (but I would not leave my door unlocked). I feel safer being out after dark.
But I worry about the amount of drinking here, the number of people carrying guns, and especially the roundabouts and 4-way stops.

This is the 2nd recent reference to "the number of people carrying guns" and I will ask again - where is the statistic showing this information???
