My husband loves loves loves the French Canadian section of the genealogy club. They are very active and have done tons of research on local data sources. Who knew there would be so much available for French Canadians in Florida!

My pleasure.

I tried to send you the entire page of hyperlinks to all the French Canadian "dit" names.....but no matter how I deleted or shortened the info.....TOTV kept sayng I had to delete another 1,400 or more words.

See if this hyperlink works.... hope it does......

Surname Variations (http://www.afgs.org/ditnames/index1.html)and dit Names (http://www.afgs.org/ditnames/index1.html) Databases (http://www.afgs.org/AFGS-Databases.html)

If not, type in American-French Genealogical Society. They have a wealth of information on French Canadians, etc.
The link works, and there is our name complete with the variations we knew about and several we didn't!

One of the best run clubs in The Villages. The directors do a great job. But please don't join, we have too many members already.

How costly is it to go on Ancestory.com ? There are folks on both sides of my family who've done "family trees"---I'd LOVE to get a copy of each but haven't had much luck as yet.

TVGS meets at 10 a.m. on the fourth Wednesday of the month Sep to May or June (check the website for the dates and programs). I think we just hit 900 members at the last meeting. It's a great organization with a number of SIGs (Special Interest Groups) such as the aforementioned French-Canadian, British, DNA, Family Tree Maker, Beginners and more.
On the subject of Ancestry.com - it is almost magic and a tremendous resource BUT BE VERY CAREFUL! Many people have thousands of "ancestors" and not one source for their information. I've seen families where the child was born before the parents! Ancestry tries to stop you from entering such information but evidently some people just ignore the warnings. So, use the wonderful green leaves as hints, not facts. It's worth every penny.

I find genealogy absolutely fascinating. My parents, grandparents were interested in genealogy long before it was generally popular. I am the "keeper" of the papers for my children and grandchildren and, as a result, I am now in the middle of a big project to convert records to a format that will last - that is until that format is antiquated and another one comes along.

I have 1000's of family pictures, many over 100 years old. That is one project. I have family movies 70+ years old that have been converted to CD. I have original documents/papers that I am organizing and preserving, but the most fascinating of all is the family letters.

I have sorted and organized them by the author of the letter and am scanning them and labeling them in a searchable format. Eventually there will be a cd for each child as I know the letters will eventually crumble. I have 1000 or more and these are the sorted ones. I threw out some obvious trash. The oldest that I have found so far were written by my great grandparents. I also have letters from my grandparents to each other during WWI and from my parents to each other during WWII. The most fascinating letters so far are from my grandmother who was killed in an accident one month before my parents were married. I am named for her and she has become alive and real to me through these letters.

(Come to think of this, I may have posted this information before in another thread - sorry for the duplication. It is all just so fascinating - at least to me.)

Also, Pocahontas was my 14th great grandmother. The family name has been carried down all these generations to my aunt and my first cousin. One other thought - my husband and I are 9th cousins with both of us belonging to the Bolling Family Association.

Anyway - that is my 2 cents on genealogy. I hope I live long enough to finish preserving and identifying all the family history papers and pictures.

There are also lots of free ancestry websites, none as comprehensive as ancestry.com
Familysearch.org is run by the Mormon church and reflects some but not all of the data they have in their repository.
The public library in your home town, and here in the Villages, likely has a free subscription to ancestry.com. However you must go to the library to use it (main facility on 466A) as it is not accessible online. Many libraries have online censuses to read which are searchable by name if they have Heritage Quest. You generally must have an active library card.
