Do we need one living in The Villages? If so, what brand and type do you recommend? Thanks.

Those of us who lived through the tornado several years ago learned, some the hard way. I don't know of too many friends who don't have one. You can even get them programmed by taking it in to any Villages fire station.
They sell a good quality model at either Walmart or Sam's Club.

We bought the Sangean CL-100 from Amazon for around $60.

When we moved here my wife insisted we have one. A few years later, it is nowhere to be found. Too many interruptions and alerts even when programmed for the local area.
My phone gives me alerts at a much less annoyance frequency and also tells me when lightning is in the area.

I use the Storm Shield app on my iphone - can be set for multiple locations or can be used for your current location - seems to be very reliable.

You can get a Midland at Publix and then take it directly to the nearest fire station and they will gladly program it for you. I think the current model is WR100 and sells for around $30.00. It can be found cheaper on Amazon.

I wouldn't be without one here. Tornados are one weather event that an alarm is issued for. We also have severe thunderstorms and the definition means more than just lots of electrical activity. Strong winds are also seen in severe thunderstorms and severe storms can sometimes spawn tornados. The tornado that struck this area was an F3 I believe. Most are smaller, but honestly, I'd rather be made aware of potential danger than be blissfully unaware and maybe injured.
Everyone has their own comfort level about such things. You'll have to decide for yourself. I got my MIdland radio at Amazon. Currently it is set for three counties since my location borders at least two closely and the third, no so far away.

Out of the box the Midland is already set for local signals and I get alerts for: Sumter; Lake and Marion. You can set it for just one if you'd like - very easy to do from the instructions or just visit the fire station.
One Negative: The normal Midland model can not be set for only certain events (Tornados for instance). At least I don't think so.

I don't know how, but somehow I ended up with three weather radios, so we have two extras: a Midland and a Radio Shack. If anyone is interested in buying one, please send me a PM. Thank you.
