Our Verizon cell phone reception in Sanibel is spotty; too many dropped calls. If it says like this, we'll be unhappy TV campers (moved here June 1). Advice?

We're both longtime Verizon users "up north." We use Apple iPhones.

I too noticed that on our recent lifestyle visit. You probably have to live near "the wire."

We bought in Sanabel also, and have Verizon. We have only been there for 4 days so far, we will be going back for a couple of weeks next week, I will keep my fingers crossed that Verizon works okay because I plan to tether my phone to my computer.

I'm here since the 5th and Verizon is fine in Gilchrist. Sorry you're having a problem. This "up north too" user is still happy. Wonder why the problem for you.

Do you use an Apple iPhone?

On our previous trips here, we never had a Verizon problem. Now that we live here, we do. Murphy's Law?

Maybe that's the difference. I opted not to get an iPhone but rather stuck with just a regular phone with text etc.

Phone brand and even the operating system (OS) can make a big difference. We are in Charlotte, and have Verizon android phones, Motorola Razr Maxx, and the call recepton was only OK...some calls would go directly to voice mail...until the OS was updated recently to Jelly Bean, now, it is fine. Also, consider that if you have a block construction (or concrete)home, that may affect the cell reception inside. Previously, we had Sprint, and found that phone brand made a big difference in reception in our previous home in another state...so perhaps, try to find other Verizon users with different phones to try in your home?

I have found that my Verizon call / reception quality in the southern in of TV is spotty to bad. I get better service in the middle of the Ocala National Forrest!

I have been told that subscriber demand is exceeding cell tower capacity .... verizon needs to correct that.

I live near Spanish Springs and Verizon signal is fine. If you continue to have problems I suggest you look into a device called a "network extender". It uses your internet connection to boost your signal strength. I could get little or no signal at my home in MA, and the extender gave me four bars.

Sorry to hear you are having problems with your iphones in Sanibel. We are also in Sanibel but do not have iphones. However, we are with Verizon and we have not noticed any problems with our cell service but we are not yet there full-time. We have been considering iphones for our next upgrade, perhaps we should not do that. Have you contacted Verizon? I hope they are able to do something to assist you. Please keep us apprised of your situation with the phone service. Best Wishes.

Try *228. This updates your roaming capabilities on Verizon and has helped us get better reception.

*228 does not work on iphone 5 with LTE capabilities. We live in Hadley and have had problems with reception since we moved in in 2010. We purchased a Panasonic link-to-cell phone/answering system (we also have a land line with Comcast). You can answer your cell using your regular phone and that seems to work really well...no dropped calls using the phone instead of the cell.

OK, I did *228 at 11:30 pm on Tuesday, June 11, on my Apple iPhone 4. I'll try it out to see if it eliminates or reduces my dropped calls. Got my fingers crossed!

Thanks for the tip. I'll post my findings in a few days.

Me too... Been here 5 years and never had a problem. Don't have a fancy phone, just a regular flip phone. I can also get reception in Lake Panasofkee in the middle of no where.

My husbands's flip phone gets great reception, not so for my x-Droid.......calls dropped in our home all the time.

We've been here for over 9 years (all w/ Verizon), live just north of 466, and have had NO problems since we've been here. Zero dropped calls and have yet to fail to connect.

Long time Verizon users, 3 year villages resident (just north of 466A) and no problems using IPhone. My guess would be a saturated cell tower, folks are moving south of 466A so fast you can't count'em.. That's a good thing, and Brownwood keeps maturing as well.

Try the Samsung network extender made for the Verizon network. $250.00 through Verizon, under $200 on eBay. It requires a continuous internet connection (high-speed, a la Comcast, Centurylink...). The difference is night and day!

We are in Lynnhaven and had both cell phones work with no problem. It doesn't seem that cell phone towers should be a problem as you're probably less than eight miles away.

After doing the *228 update on my Apple iPhone 4 about 5 days ago, I have had no dropped calls through my Verizon service. Yea! I'll be very happy if this success continues.

Smiling in Sanibel,

Glad to hear this has hepled!

FYI to others, as was pointed out in a previous post, this *228 update DOES NOT work on ANY 4G Verizon phone...

Tech support once told me that *228 for roaming should be updated every month or so.

I live in Silver Lake and my Verizon reception is also a bit spotty. I don't get very good reception in some places in my own house.
I had Verizon for years up north after doing a bit of research and finding that it had the best reception and fewest dropped calls. After a bit of research, I found that unfortunately it also is rated number one for the Villages area.
