View Full Version : Don't trash us again

While walking our therapy puppy this morning (yep, I had poop bags) I picked up a couple pieces of trash that obviously had been thrown from a golf cart or vehicle. I came to realize that it is not all that uncommon to see trash along our streets and roads in todays world. I recall that not too many years ago seeing a beer can or styrofoam cup along a Villages street was indeed rare. And it's not all the dirty work of outsiders, have a look over the edge of the wooden bridge where Morse meets route 466. You will see trash that was probably thrown there by residents from their golf carts. One of the items I picked up today was the creative work of someone. It was a large Circle K styrofoam cup with a lid and straw. As I picked it up I could detect something inside the cup. The cup was only a disguise for a beer can, the straw was actually inserted in the beer can and would keep anyone from knowing that the driver was in truth drinking a beer while driving.

When circumstances permit , I too try to pick up and properly dispose of trash when I am out walking , driving my cart or bike riding . It just seems to me hat if we all did a little bit that we could keep things nice .
I have witnessed a number of people driving vehicles belonging to contracting firms and service providers toss out their trash as they are driving about on the major traffic collector roads such as Morse and BV .
It`s unfortunate that some choose to litter when it is just so easy to do the right thing .

I'm with you, bj, I get it that not all people grew up with don't be a litterbug mentality. I think it would take a huge media blitz to change everyone's behavior. We could complain to authorities who have no budget for a change program, but the reality where I live in a construction zone is to pick up the trash without feeling annoyed.
Those guys and gals are working very hard on very hot days and I hope they drink enough liquids to stay healthy. I've got your styrofoam cup, dude. Thanks for putting a roof on in 95 degrees.

It appears that some of the workers around the villages have been doing this. I saw one person on the lawns on 466a golf path. tossed his cup from his work cart and drove away. Yep it was beer can in side a large plastic cup.

Actually I know someone who lives here that does that. He got stopped for having an open beer in his golf cart a few years back so now he uses the beer in the styrofoam cup trick.

OMG! Could it be "the workers" who throw dog crap in the Mailbox trash cans?

I wonder if the issue is a belief of "entitlement" versus understanding that curteousy should know no boundaries? If you examine any population, consider the bell curve and apply it to pretty much each situation. There are some people who are proactive (and hopefully appreciated!) and help keep the area looking so nice, there are most of the people who don't litter but also aren't proactively cleaning up debris, and then there is the lower end of the bell curve where the litterbugs reside. Change this to a "poop" thread, bad driving, unsafe golf cart use, or other "hot topic" and it is the same thing.

Hopefully as we post, and rant, it is an effective outlet for our frustrations. I can't say that I am surprised at some of the "antics" we see and read about, it is just disappointing and sad that people may change, but behaviors do not. :posting:

intolerance of other viewpoints can make one miserable if exercised in great detail. one's own standard is probably not going to be universally sanctioned. example of my own fallacy: slow drivers set me off. if only I could control them all....

I appreciate your desire to make a standard for cleanliness. I wonder what you can do to be effective in our communities to make a clean street happen?Should you think of a strategy that you are willing to oversee, please let me know. otherwise, SEEMS the simple thing is to pick up the trash we collect with gratitude for workers who do not have the privilege of biweekly trash PU.

Not really my desire to set the standards of cleanliness. But, I really have a problem with the idea that because someone works outside all day they can't
A. Pick up after themselves
B. Not drink and drive
Just my humble observations. I suppose I see a problem more with complacent attitude toward drinking and driving than the fact that the workers have no respect for the residents in the area by throwing their own trash away.
Gratitude???? Pretty sure they get satisfied every payday.....

I know it sounds wonderful to think that the Villagers wouldn't do such a thing so it must be the workers & the contractors. Not necessarily true. There are a lot of Villagers that toss trash & don't care. It's not always "the other people" !!! I have seen it.

Everyone should have respect for our community and keep it clean. I had seen a contractor truck move out in front of a golf cart at the last second to have him see the fear of the golf cart driver who had to quickly brake. The contractor drove past me laughing like it was the funniest thing he ever saw. So you you say we should pick up after them and give them gratitude for them having a job and getting paid?

While I agree that "the simple thing is to pick up the trash", I don't agree that the workers do not have biweekly trash pick up. I'm willing to bet that virtually EVERY site they work at has a trash receptacle. There is NO reason they need to be throwing their trash on the ground...

Gratitude? Yeah, I give them all the gratitude possible for building our dream homes and place to live, it's hard work, especially in the heat and humidity, but that doesn't mean I need to feel good about picking up their trash.

Sorry Kitty, I just don't agree.

Of course everyone SHOULD police their own litter. I'm saying this issue does not set me off, I find it tolerable, it's an attitude. I wish slow drivers were tolerable. Neither of these irritants is something we can do much to fix. Best we can do is say shame on Villagers tossing their secret beer containers. Probably construction crews aren't reading this.

Your quote is why I mentioned the particular location below the wooden bridge. This trashing is totally coming from golf carts. I concluded a long time ago that that many of those workers from the outside and in general the public from the outside have distain for Villagers. Their perception of Villagers are, we are a bunch of demanding rich people.

This thread engages me cognitively and emotionally. It calls me discriminate as to my circle of influence (Steven Covey), and calls up research on Change Management, as well as mental health/spiritual concepts whereby one knows of the external control exerted when one's buttons are pushed.
Stimulated, and thanks to the OP...

OMG, I would have to report that person to the authorities, it wouldn't matter who it was.....friend or relative. I'm sure you'd hate to get anyone in trouble with the law, but it could save their life, or someone else totally innocent. Drinking & driving should not be tolerated.

about having one's buttons pushed... we all have them and our intolerance may slide our reasoning ability into black and white thinking, possibly the worst personal perspective. us against them..

Some people litter, some people police the area they live in, this is true anywhere. The Villages is still paradise when you compare it to the rest of the world. We have minimal litter, most of our villagers do not litter and I have seen many of them pick up litter they come across. The landscaping is beautiful, the flowers are always changed to look great, and the whole complex is tended to regularly. I would rather look at the beauty of our villages than complain about minimal litter. The Villages is still Paradise.
