I don't know why, but I am having the hardest time following this tournament. It seems like they are jumping all over the place and I'm never sure what is going on. Not enjoying the play at all.

If the pro's are having such a hard time playing at Merion it makes me wonder if it might take me a couple of days to play 18. This course is a toughie. I really do appreciate a tournament that the scores are closer to par than the ones that the winner is 20 something under par. Merion honors the golfer that can shape his shots more than the power hitters. My opinion only.....

Merion is what golf meant to be finesse playing, intellient course management and a needed putting acumen

I love the US Open and this one is great. But, these guys are not really playing the Merion that you and I might play. The USGA has moved fairways, lengthened holes, grown the rough and sped up the greens.
While I really enjoy seeing the best in the world playing these conditions and would love to see more tournaments under these conditions, it's a shame that they've had to trick up the golf course and take the driver out of the hands of so many of the players.
I would rather se the USGA do their jobs and limit the ball and equipment so that they would have to do this. It's really too bad that they can't play what they now call a short course without having to trick it up so much.
Playing tee shots with the driver used to be an important part of the game. In so many tournaments today, especially the USGA events, being the best driver of the ball is not advantage. It used to be that courses had one or two par four holes where you didn't hit a driver. Now, it's two or three holes where they do hit driver.
But it is telling that when you look at this leader board going into the final round, all of the players that are there, with the exception of one of two that are mising, are the players that you'd want to see there. The cream is rising to the top and that is the USGA's goal. So overall, good job on them.
Now get back to Far Hills and do something about the ball.

Boogie I couldn't agree more. The USGA IMHO has not done their job with limiting the equipment or the golf ball. I'm a fan of Steve Stricker. Go Strick!

And now after almost twenty five years of guys using the long putter they decide to take that away from them as opposed to getting control of the golf ball. They used to have an overall distance standard for the ball. When manufacturers made balls that exceeded the standard, they "adjusted" the standard. They also test balls under unrealistic conditions. The putter doesn't affect any of the golf courses but the ball does.
It's great for average players that the ball goes a long way and doesn't curve as much, but it's gotten to the point where a golf course is going to have to be over 8,000 yards in order for a tour event to be held there.
