My mother may be coming to live near me within the next year, she would like a senior apartment. I live in The Villages but she would like her own apartment with some senior activities and a shuttle bus service, she still wants to maintain independence so living with me isn't an option right now. She is active, in good health and mind. She is on a limited income, and if she sold her house up north she would get some equity out of that to live on, but it's not a lot of money. So where near the Villages are some senior apartments that are affordable and have some services and activities?

Check out the new Providence Independent Living apartments on 466A on the way towards Wildwood. They are beautiful, lots of activities, some meals, etc. Do not know what your mom can afford but take a look. Also Leesburg has Lake Port Square. These are independent living communities so may be out of her price range. I will try and find some others for you to check out.

I looked at Provident, and for a small 2 bedroom, it was $4,300 a month.

I think a studio is $1995.

Have you considered a long term rental in TV? I know she could rent a Patio Villa for less than the cost shown here, plus there is a bus service and probably other conveniences available. I have a friend who had a 2/2 long term rental here and he got $800 a month.

Was your dad a veteran? If so, your mom may be eligible to receive assistance if she were to choose assisted living. If she needs assistance with anything such as medications she might qualify. She would still have a lot of independence, it depends on her needs. I had looked into this option with my dad but he still wants to live independently and although he would qualify he decided it wasn't for him at this time (he is almost 86 and is still very independent). He is purchasing a manufactured home at Parkwood Manor in Wildwood.
We also looked at senior town-homes for rent in Fruitland Park and Lady Lake. There is an income threshold to qualify for senior pricing. I am not aware of activities but they are very nice. Something to remember is that if your parent lives outside The Villages in Lake, Marion, or Sumter counties that they are not eligible for a guest ID card.

They could not enjoy the pools or rec center activities with you.

Veterans Assistance called The Aid and Attendant Benefit is for veterans or their spouses, or both, if the veteran served overseas, had a honorable discharge, and if he or his spouse need assistance with at lease two activities of daily living such as bathing, eating, mobility, medication management. It requires financial qualification but your monthly medical bills can be deducted from your monthly income for qualification. It takes no less than 6 months to get approval. Just as an FYI. The spousal benefit is approximately $1100 a month; the veteran I think is about $1600 and for both just over $2000, but check on the exact amounts.

Thanks for the responses, I am aware of the veterans benefits as I am receiving them as my spouse was 100% service connected. She would not qualify for those benefits. I'll keep looking and watching this post for any new information, Thanks everyone!

I am trying to think what one of the posters said when he/she mentioned bus service. I haven't heard of any here.

There are long-term rentals in the historic district that are less expensive and which would afford her all TV guest ID privileges.

Sumter County Transit operates a bus in TV. I have often seen it parked at Publix on Wedgwood Lane, it will also pick up at your home for an additional small charge. It was introduced about two to three years ago. See this link:

If you don't have a car and don't want to use a golf cart it's probably a convenient way to get from here to there.

The Carriage House is absolutely fantastic. Rent is on a month to month basis. The facility is wonderful. For less than $4000 per month you can live there with no other costs other than your phone. linen service, apartment cleaning, three delicious meals every day, transportation, crafts and so much more. The carriage house is on 466 behind the WalMart store. Be sure to go for a tour and a free lunch.

My mom is at Spring Lake Cove in Fruitland Park. The senior cottages are beautiful and convenient with parking spaces right in front. ( all single ground floor units). They have a shuttle service that is limited to what's on schedule for that day. Nice pool but the complex also rents to families so a lot of kids at times. If you dad still drives you may want to take a look at this.
