We have 20 girls here in PA and 2 turkeys growing for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I love them but will have to get rid of them once we move down to TV full-time. :(

A few years ago I vacationed in Key West, and I took a trolley tour that went all over Key West. I was so surprised to see chickens running free in some people's yards. At first I thought I was seeing things.

Never mind New Jersey. Some people are raising chickens legally in BROOKLYN.

Yes the chickens have really taken over in Key West. There's a rooster that hops up on a roof and crows, not just at daybreak but all day long!

.... The best roast chicken I've ever had in my life was in Colorado...... Free range chicken. It was so different than what we buy in the supermarket. A drier (rather than slimey texture) but tender and just natural tasting......delicious.
We are all so used to our adulterated food..........sad to say.
.... [N]ow, the meat just isn't the same unless one can afford the organic or free range type..........actually, over the years, we've eaten less and less meat....
There is no reason for us to be "so used to our adulterated food"! On this topic of "old is new again," those of us who are old enough can think back to the times when our foods were not so adulterated, either to create greater profits or to increase shelf life (which is probably another means to greater profits...).
At one time virtually all our food was organic and free rangeand that wasn't so long ago! Look what we're choosing to do to ourselvesand our childrennowadays. Look at the constantly increasing percentage (in children in particular) of food allergies. It's not hard to imagine what is causing this:
In some cases food is genetically modified, so what was once simply "food" is now "genetically modified food," but to use the word "food" for both is questionable. And then there are additives like "flavor enhancers" (which too often is "MSG") and the increased use of pesticides. Could these account for the increase in food allergies? Do we question what the meaning is behind "being allergic to FOOD"?!
We do NOT have to live this way if we so choose. I agree that organic foods and free-range meat (and I too eat less and less meat as I get older) are more expensive, but are we worth it, and are our children worth it? Can we not set priorities, maybe go to the movies less or eat out less often, so that there is more available for healthier foods? After all, when we had gasoline crises in the past, we found ways to manage....
See more info in the following link:
Food Allergy Among US Children: Prevalence and Hospitalizations (http://www.kidswithfoodallergies.org/resourcespre.php?id=129&)
Look at some of the points made and how can they NOT make us more conscious of this issue:
Four out of every 100 children have a food allergy
Food allergy in children in the United States is becoming more common over time
Children with food allergy are more likely to have asthma or other allergic conditions
Recent data show hospitalizations with diagnoses related to food allergies have increased among children
Think about it....

The best chicken I ever had was one our son prepared for us. It was when he was learning how to slaughter chickens -they were organic chickens.
I remember going with my Grandmother to pick out a live chicken, and the butcher preparing it for her. I also recall hoping that the chicken would have an unlaid egg in it.
This was in New York City.
Does anyone recall eggs that had a double yolk?
The wonderful memories continue, but I will end here.

Let's hope we don't start having free range chickens down here in The Villages.
Then we'd have to put up with reading chicken poop threads.
When I was a kid my parents would buy free range chicken and DUCK eggs. One time my Mom cracked an egg open and there was a half grown bird in it. To this day I still don't like eggs!

I think the interest in raising chickens is two-fold. One because of all the hormones and additives and two, because of the interest in self-sustainability. I'd love a big garden in my yard to grow my own food should there be an economic problem or whatever in this country. I would need to move to a farm or at least a larger lot without deed restrictions if this became a strong inner drive. Right now, I'm happy to go to the Brownwood Farmers Market.

Most of us Retirees pay somebody to mow our yards while we golf for exercise. I am making a wild guess that somebody will raise the chickens and after our golf game we will drive our cart to Publix or Farmers Market for a couple dozen of eggs.

.... because of all the hormones and additives....
You are so right with regard to the hormones....
For those who are interested, there is an organic farm in Pedro on CR 42 on the right side just before the blinker light at the intersection of CR 42 and CR 475. There is a sign by their driveway. And contrary to the general rule that organic food costs more, the prices there are roughly comparable to those at Publix—and the produce is fabulous! (If there's something you want that they grow but that isn't in the farm stand, they'll go out and pick/cut it for you!) They also sell organic eggs, free of "hormones" and "additives," though they sell out quickly the days that they have them. These folks are a pleasure to deal with!

My son and his 3 kids out in California built a chicken coop with a fenced yard attached and had 16 hens. They enjoyed the fresh eggs immensely.
But after he lost a few of the smaller chickens to a couple of large hawks, he bought 2 huge turkeys to wander around and protect the chickens.

.... Besides produce, do they also have organic roasting chickens???....
I keep recalling the free range chicken we enjoyed in Colorado.
Totally different than what we can get in Vermont at our local supermarkets.
Sorry, no chickens at the organic farm.... However, there is a place nearby (not sure exactly where) that sells organic meat; maybe they sell chickens. Came across them when Wildwood had the farmers' market, so maybe they're in the Brownwood market.
.... I'll get mine at that organic farm stand.
Their eggs are wonderful; there really IS a huge difference! However, keep in mind that they don't always have them, as they get them from elsewhere.
