Has anyone noticed that the average price of books for Kindle, Nook, etc., that used to be around $9 is now around $12? The price of paper books has not gone up that much.

Yes I have. It has sent me to the lower price books on Nook. I must saythat I have enjoyed many of them. When you go on shop (on Nook) type in $2.99 or lower, some are actually free. This will bring up a bunch of cheaper books by authors who want to be discovered. Most of the ones I have purchased I have enjoyed. Good Luck.

FYI - according to my wife they also have "Free Fridays."
At least on the nook.

You may want to say "Thanks" (or something) to Apple for their price fixing collusion with some publishers. They are currently in court for their efforts.
I think it is ridiculous how much they charge for kindle ebooks.
There are no printing costs, paper costs, delivery costs, etc. consequently ebooks should be less than 1/2 the price of paperback books and less than 1/4 the price of hard cover books.
What a rip-off.
That said, I do love my kindle. I especially like how you can change the print size plus my kindle cover has a l.e.d reading light that is just awesome for pm reading. I also like it when you find an author you like, you can look for and down load other books they have written without going to a book store or the library.

Not just Kindle.
You may notice below the book price where it says; "This price was set by the publisher".
Once again, Thanks Apple, and your price fixing buddies.

I can understand why even on Kindle book prices are set. The writers of the books do have to be paid for their work.

I get my downloadable e-books through the Sumter County Library. Lots of selection and, supposedly, much more to come. The downside is that you can only have the books for two weeks. My wife and I have been reading up a storm. We each have a library card and our tastes are the same. We can each have four books out at a time. You return them when you've finished them or they just go away at two weeks. It's easy to put them on hold. Everything is done on-line.

Those of you who are snowbirds or flakes or still have a library card from your place of origin as ebooks from libraries are borrowed over the internet you can be anywhere and borrow them and some metro libraries have a larger selection. Our king co library system here in WA lets you borrow for 28 days.
Hawaii was the same.
Another listing of free books on Kindle

Different free books with new ones every day. Some are only free for a day or two. Quite often they are offered as a promotion to get you reading an author so you will buy more but also when an author is on a book tour sometimes. But I got The Da Vinci Code for free it was only available for a couple of days but I was lucky and I got it. Some authors have retained the electronic rites to their books and give them to libraries so if you find your library has a lot of one author that may be why.
If you own a book you can lend it to another kindle owner (or anyone who has downloaded a free kindle reading ap) for 14 days but only that long kind of a bummer.

I would think supply and demand has much to do with the rising prices. More and more people are buying ebooks while traditional bookstores are losing customers at a fast pace. Prices go where the buyers are.

I too am disappointed that prices went from $9.99 to $12.99, but think it has more to do with the huge increase in demand for ebooks than the actual material costs of a book. I love my kindle and will continue to buy books on it. If I was to get a print edition of a best seller, it would cost me about $25, so I am still saving a lot of money by buying the ebook, even without factoring in gas and time and sales tax.
I think some price consideration should be given by ebook retailers for the volume of books they probably would had not have sold were it not for online sales and it's got to cost them a lot less to produce an ebook vs. a conventional book. They can still pay the authors per unit volume.

You can't get information unless you give them your email address? Why do they need your email address?

I don't know very much about this. Where would one buy a kindle and how much does one cost? Do you pay a monthly online fee? If so, how much does that cost? How much do you pay to read a book? If you read one chapter and decide you don't like it, do you still pay the full price? If you happen to be mostly interested in science, can you limit it to that one subject? And how would you know if they will have the books you're interested in?

It looks like you are correct. The judge just ruled that Apple conspired to fix prices on ebooks. The punishment portion of the trial is to follow.
Villages PL. You can buy a kindle at Amazon.com. Make sure you get one that has wifi. I have one that has an etch a sketch like screen that l like a lot because it is good in any type of light situation. I also bought a leather cover for it that has a built in led light that I love to use at night when reading in bed. I bought my parents one that is fancier with a color screen etc. but I think the screen is too reflective to read comfortably and I like mine better. There are all different types of kindles and prices. Once you have the kindle, you can download ebooks from amazon. If your kindle has wifi you can download them directly to your kindle. You can also download ebooks from your library. There are millions of books available. I frequently go to amazon and look at the top 100 free ebooks and download one for free that I think would be interesting. They are usually fun to read and it is a great way to try out different authors. When I first got the kindle(it was a present from my daughter)I didn't think I would like it because I liked the feel of a real book or paperback but I have quickly got over that. What I really like the most about it is I can take my kindle on trips and I usually have over 60 books on it that I haven't read so I can pick any type of reading I would like and I don't have to fill my suitcase full of books. Another good thing is if you find an author you like, it is easy to look at Amazon and find all the books he or she has written and if you have a wifi connection you can download another of their books in about a minute. Hope that helps.

I always have to chuckle when folks say they will never get a kindle or a nook because they like the feel of a real book. I think that people used to say that they would never read a book because they like the feel of a real scroll. It is so much more comfortable to hold a kindle than it is to hold a big, heavy book. I have a kindle app on my iPad, but still prefer reading on my kindle because it is so light and easy to hold.

Thanks, I see they have it on sale for $169.00 (sticker shock!)
I don't think mine cost that much. You probably don't need retina display or color screen. Credit cards make it all easy but gift cards that you use yourself are a great idea.
No online fees, no purchase agreement fees. They just want you to use your kindle to by "stuff" at Amazon. You never have to buy anything if you get free ebooks or get ebooks thru the library.

JP, what is the model name of the Kindle you have? I have one of the original ones. It has a leather cover so I can open it like book, but no light in the cover. My husband has a Kindle Touch. I would like one eventually with a built in light but don't want a Kindle Fire as I don't like reading the backlit ones (like reading books on my iPad, for instance.)

My wife and I have had Kindles ever since they first came out. Presently I have a Kindle Paperwhite which allows me to read in any kind of light from a dark room to bright sunlight. The screen is very easy on the eyes and is not as tiring as say an Ipad which has a backlit screen. You can have either a wifi unit or a 4g unit which allows you to buy books anywhere. My wife has purchased books while riding in our car. However, I just have wifi as I can download books at home and if I go on vacation I can get enough books to see me thru. Don't feel I need the 4g which is more expensive.
I really love my paperwhite and would recommend that particular Kindle. I think the price now is around $140. You can check them out at Best Buy.

CFrance. My kindle is also,I believe, one of the original ones. My cover is also leather but it does have a light that runs off of my Kindles' battery. Maybe you have a light too? It is a black looking piece that pulls out on the upper left of the cover. If you don't have a lighted cover I bet you could get a lighted cover if you wanted to. I believe at the time my cover was around $50. Since the light is a led it takes hardly any power to run it. Its' nice because it lights the front of the kindle almost like a room light but isn't so bright as to bother anybody else.

Villages PL, I received a Kindle e-reader as a Christmas gift in Dec. 2011. My is just the e-reader, not a Kindle Fire, which is Amazon's version of a tablet. My Kindle cost $159.00 18 months ago, now Amazon is selling the Kindle 3G WI-FI for $69. The Kindle Paperwhite is $119 with WI-FI. The Kindle Paperwhite 3G WI-FI is $179.00. If you are not sure if you want to buy a book or not, Amazon lets you get a free sample of a book downloaded to your Kindle. The free sample is usually about 5 or 6 pages of the book. You can also downnload games onto the Kindle. I have downloaded several word and trivia games onto my Kindle. Games are usually between $1 and $2
I really like my Kindle. I have read more books in the past 18 months on the Kindle than I had the previous 5 years.

There were 25 different covers for the early kindle made by amazon and others, the first covers did not have a light built in and where still the ones most sold until the one with built in pull out light came out I think in 2010.
I now have the paperwhite as it has a built in side light that you can adjust up and down to help with glare and allows you to read at night. It is not backlit as that defeats the whole purpose of the eink which is better for you eyes if you read for many hours at a time than a backlit computer screen.
It is $119 with advertisments that pop up when you turn it on or $139 without. The one most of you are referring to as the original kindle is the keyboard kindle and is now sold for $69 new. If you want to see what kindle books are like you can download the kindle ap to your computer or Ipad but will have to set up an amazon account which is also free. Check my earlier posts on how to get free Kindle books, there are many on the amazon site ie all of the Jane Austin for instance.

I'll try to answer most of your questions. You can buy a basic wifi kindle for about $70.00. If you don't have wifi in your home, you can go to a nearby rec center that has wifi. You don't need wifi to tead the book, just to download it. They also have kindles that use 3G to download. Best sellers on kindle usually run around $13.00 versus $25.00 in a book store, so you can see that a kindle pays for itself very quickly. They also have many free books. Once you buy a book and start reading it you cannot return it if you don't like it. However, before you buy they will let you download a sample for free that usually is the first 5 or 6 pages of the book. You can also see what others who bought the book think about it because many people post reviews. There are no hidden fees. No on line fees or maintenance fees. If you have any questions, or would like to see my kindle, please pm me and I will be glad to show you all the features.

Thanks, it sounds pretty good. I'll have to give it some thought as to whether or not it will pay for me to get one. I live close to the library and only buy an occasional book about science, if I like it enough to keep as a reference. If I order a used one (like new) it usually only costs about $10 to $12.
