The general consensus seems to be that the more batteries, the better. Many people, including myself, are considering going from six 8 volt batteries to eight 6 volts.
I think that some golf cart companies went to four 12s in order to save weight, but from everything I've heard it doesn't work. Most of the experts say the eight 6 volt configuration is the best.

The 4 12 volts for a golf course was a good idea. Used the way most do in the villages, not so good. Adding more batteries is like adding a bigger fuel tank.

The 4 12V is an economical way to go with a lower cost of batteries, but does give you limited range. The 8 6V is preferred for higher range though. While both packs would have the same number of cells and plates, the 6V batteries have much thicker plates which lead to greater capacity.
