Hi neighbors and friends. I'm looking to grow and keep a Fig Tree here in TV.
Any information on where to find one and or which variety is best for our area?

Now all I need to do is find a Nursery around TV that has em.

any of the larger Nursery's have then or will gladly get one for you.

You should be able to find one at Home Depot or Lowes. They do very well here. They may die back to the ground if we have a VERY cold winter, but will grow back and bear abundantly.

we got ours at walmart - not as big as one from a nursery - but not as expensive! it is just a spit of a thing but it is doing well. the late cold spell we had last winter sorta did in the leaves that had popped out - but it is recovering nicely so far.

Many years ago I was told by a nursery guy that you need to buy two or more fig trees because they need to cross-pollinate in order to bear fruit (male and female). Supposedly, having 3 increases your chances for success. So I bought 3 but never got any fruit.

based on our experience - that is not so. we get lotsa figs on the one tree we have here in n.j. - and we have given shoots from that tree to several friends who also get lotsa figs from their solo trees. we simply prune back each season and wrap fto protect from the harshness of winter up here.

Great post..... I was thinking the same thing.... My Grandfather had a lone
Fig Tree in the yard in Queens NYC.....
It flourished and all we did was to be sure it was wrapped tight with a pail on top to make it through a NYC winter. It always had juicy fruit every year.
That was 60 plus years ago, plus, plus....lol

My grandfather from Ct also had one, he wrapped it and brought it into the basement, and brought it out every spring. I have planted one here in the villages, in memory of him.

My husband and I are getting ready to put our house on the market to move to the villages. He currently has over 200 fig trees of different varieties from all over the world. Needless to say, he will have to select only a few to bring with him when we move. The "Black Madeira" is one of the best tasting figs there is.Since Florida is humid, look for a fig variety with a closed eye to minimize splitting. Too bad we're not closer geographically, I would be more than happy to give one of ours!

PS. One tree will bear fruit; you don't need more trees for cross pollination purposes.
