Lane Closures – Morse Boulevard Bridge
To ensure safe working conditions on the Morse Boulevard Bridge at Lake Sumter, traffic lanes are currently reduced from four to two lanes. We anticipate this work to continue over the next couple of days. Please use caution when navigating this area and follow all directional signage. Please stay tuned to Village Community Development Districts (http://www.DistrictGov.org) for additional updates.

I read in the Tampa Sentinel about the new catfish and bullfrog farm that is being built in Lake Sumter here in The Villages. The construction work by the Morse Bridge is the beginning of the dredging and the pen areas. The restaurants in The Villages have formed a consortium (with the Morse family being in charge) to have a huge catfish and bullfrog farm so there will be freshly caught catfish and frog legs year round.
I can hardly wait!

Gracie I too was wondering what was going on. Each day the pile of dirt gets higher and higher. It's on one of the Palmer courses next to the Bonnybrook gate and Belvedere Blvd. Enormous excavation and lots of equipment. Also, there have been divers in the pond next to it. Could it be a sinkhole?

The pile of dirt by the palmer course is from a water main break. It is a huge pipe. Have a temporary green because of it.

I am unsure of the location of the sand pile. If is white sand, it will probably be used in the bunkers of the Tierra Del Sol golf course that is being upgraded. We have several piles in our neighborhood that are already being added to the existing TDS bunkers.

The sandpile I am wondering about is right next to the Morse bridge over Lake Sumter. The traffic is down to two lanes.
I know that we can only pass rumors between ourselves and then someone will rant that the Sun never has the news. But hey...it's too hot and rainy for ME to play golf.

village shooter seems to think that the repair is to a water main that apparently broke due to a sink hole...i am too naive not to believe it!

You have to ask yourself why did the water main break?.???
Shifting sand and shifting earth makes the water main break it lay there hundreds of years if it is on solid ground when the ground starts Moving and there is nothing to support the pipe because of the sinkhole developing the water main breaks. Yes there was a water main break but it was caused because of a very large sinkhole that could no longer support the pipe. You have to ask why things happen ! Keep in mind that the bridge was built on flat dry ground, and the adjacent areas were filled in. Easy to have a settling problem when a water main in installed in fill.

An Italian, a Scotsman, and a Chinese fellow were working at the Morse bridge construction site. The foreman points out a huge pile of sand and tells the Italian guy that he is in charge of sweeping. He tells the Scottish man that he is in charge of the shoveling, and the Chinese guy is in charge of supplies. The foreman goes away for a couple of hours and when he returns the pile of sand is still there untouched.”
“He asks the Italian guy. “Why haven’t you swept any of the sand?’
The Italian guy says, “I no hava a broom. You said the Chinese fella wasa ina charge-a of supplies, but he hasa disappeared and I no coulda finda him no where.”
The foreman then turns to the Scottish man and says, “you were supposed to shovel this pile of sand.”
The Scottish man says, “Aye, boot ah could nay get meself a shoovel. Ye left th’ Chinese gadgie in charge of supplies, boot ah could nay find him either.”
The foreman is really angry and storms off toward the pile of sand. He is looking for the Chinese guy.”
Just then, the Chinese guy leaps out from behind the pile of sand and yells, “SUPPLIES!”

Nah, but if I said this it would be racial profiling:
A man is taking a walk in Central park in New York. Suddenly he sees a little girl being attacked by a pit bull dog.
He runs over and starts fighting with the dog. He succeeds in killing the dog and saving the girl's life.
A policeman who was watching the scene walks over and says: "You are a hero, tomorrow you can read it in all the
newspapers: "Brave New Yorker saves the
life of little girl"
The man says: - "But I am not a New Yorker!"
"Oh.
Then it will say in newspapers in the morning: 'Brave American saves life of little girl'" – the policeman answers.
"But I am not an American!" – says the man.
"Oh, what are you then?"
The man says: - "I am a Saudi!"
The next day the newspapers read:
"Islamic extremist kills innocent American
dog.”

misson hills will not need the bridge! That's sinkhole under the bridge is not fixed you will be able to just drive across the mud to get the lake Sumter Landing with all that water will be down the Sinkhole,, At least you'll be able to go fishing driving your cart across the mud. They have a huge sinkhole near the island and it caused a water main break They have worked 24 hours a day to get it repaired before it any larger sinkholes could have a tendency to get deeper and wider You are so right it is not funny it could be catastrophic if they don't stay on top of it and get it repaired but another will pop up somewhere else

The digging at Buena vista on the Palmer course was due to a water main break. There was no report of a sink hole but apparently the ground shifted causing the break. As of today the large pipe is stacked above ground ready to be installed.
So too it may be that the ground shifted as Morse causing a water main break. It is my understanding that the water main system is all connected.

Did the gentleman who told you there is a problem state it was a "sinkhole" or a hole caused by the water main break? They are not the same.
If there was a sinkhole, I wonder if the bridge would remain open? Somehow, I think not. It might be one, but I
guess until I hear from someone who actually knows what's going on, I'll remain skeptical.

I heard that there is a longstanding issue with the bridge and that it is slowly sinking; it is being propped up as a temporary measure, which is what The Villages calls "routine maintenance". Eventually the bridge will need to be replaced. That is what I heard. Of course we have been watching the repair, and listening during the night to the repair over the weekend, because we can view it from our house in Mission Hills. I do not know if what I heard is fully factual but I did hear it from someone who I believe is in the know.

I may be wrong and often am, but I don't think The Villages owns the bridge. I think the bridge is about ten years old because it was built when Lake Sumter market square was built...about ten years ago?
Sinkholes do happen during the rainy season. I would think that the county engineers wouldn't let us use the bridge if it were not safe. The orange markers are down and traffic is restored as of last night. Maybe they don't work on the weekends?
Who is the entity in charge of The Bridge? You know, the one that does snow removal? We could call them and ask them what is happening under the bridge. Had anyone thought of the billy goats Gruff? Weren't they causing some trouble under some bridge somewhere?
Who started this thread? This is JUST how rumors get started.
