While driving around the villages I see more women driving the golf cart while the man is a passenger. To me this is different then what I'm used to seeing. I myself am the driver of whatever vehicle my wife & I are traveling in pretty close to % 100 of the time. Just wondering if someone would enlighten me why they think more women are the drivers here in The Villages.

I cannot speak for everyone but several of my female friends drive because their husbands are legally blind. My husband still drives our cart and he has noticed this too. It will be interesting to hear the replies to your question.

Obviously women are better drivers.
Oh, settle down, I'm kidding.

I don't know about better. I do think more cautious & slower drivers.

He has the car; she has the cart. Only slightly chauvinistic. But, then, I was one of the females who drove most of the time -- I was the better driver.

Does it really matter. My wife and I handle it this way. If she feels like driving she does. If I feel like driving I do.

We have two carts....his and hers. When I want to go somewhere I drive my cart. When he wants to go somewhere he drives his cart. When we agree on going the same place....he takes his cart. I drive slower and more cautiously. I think men, in general, drive with their hair on fire!!

Maybe women are better at being the Designated Driver?

Hubby always drives the car, and I the golf cart. It gives him a break and a chance to enjoy the surroundings for a change. I get to enjoy them when we're in the car. Car/roads his territory, golf cart/trails my territory that way no mistakes by drivers driving on wrong territory.

Yes this is very true...my husband is one who isnt able to drive anymore due to his eye sight

I encourage my wife to drive both the car and the cart. In the event that I get hit by an asteroid, I want Wifey to be somewhat familiar as a driver with the roads and traffic patterns in the area, to learn her way around the area, and to know what a car or cart feels like during normal operations so that she can describe problems with either vehicle to a technician.

And, as obxgal stated about her hubby, it gives me a chance to chill and enjoy TV and surrounding area as a passenger.

But, I still end up doing most local and 100% of the highway driving when we ride together.

I think that, generally speaking, the men are older than the women in a relationship. Perhaps the men are no longer able to drive for one reason or another and their wives chauffeur them.

I know why. It's because women are better at finding their way. Men simply will not ask for directions

If the husband drives, he has no one to b*tch at about their driving but himself.

So many responses indicating it should be a more male activity. Very interesting.
We both drive and neither are territorial about it. But I guess since we both like to drive its not an issue. I'm just surprised that so many men feel they should be "the driver".
As far as women driver with hubby as a passenger, cataracts is what first came to my mind. But I guess that affects both sexes too. Maybe the designated driver is more likely!
Interesting observation!!!

I do most of the car driving.... I just like driving more than he does. Another factor.... I am "right eared", i.e. hear better on my right side than left, so can hear him better in conversation when I drive, he rides.

Seriously though, I wouldn't mind my wife driving more, but there is no golf cart trail from the laundry room to the kitchen.

(I sure hope she don't see this)

It's not just golf carts. I see more 20-50 year old women driving cars than when I was that age. It's a different society/culture out there. I like to drive because my wife scares the heck out of me when she gets too close to mailboxes and parked cars.

Nice to see all the replies. Now some additional observations from me.When I get behind a cart where the woman is driving I invariably have to slow down.I know everyone going to say what's your hurry, or you're not supposed to go over 20 m.p.h.
Here's my answer to what's the hurry? Even though most of us are retired all are not including myself .I need to get to work on time ,I need to make it to the golf course on time ,I need to make it to the softball fields on time. So although leisurely drives are nice they're not always in the plan. Also if you think you need to slow me down my answer to that is it's not up to you on how fast I go. If I'm going over 20 & I get stopped then I'll have to answer for my actions. Please don't get mad if I pass you.I'll only do this when it's safe to do so.

Aha!!! So your initial post had a hidden agenda.

I'll have you know my husband drives slower around the streets of TV than I do. Good thing for you we don't have a golf cart.:throwtomatoes:

Think about this. When you have your stroke or heart attack will you female companion be able to drive you around? We all need to practice

My wife has her own golf cart & she drives just fine. When we're together though I drive. Don't know why that is. I guess it's always been that way in my life. It probably started when I started dating it was always the guy drove:shrug:

Used to be like that. BUT when our daughter began to date, she was the one who HAD to drive, directions from her father, who remembered quite well how he used to drive as a teenager. She was MOST annoyed to drive them to the prom etc..However, when her daughter began to date, the same rule applied, she had to drive.

Sweetie and his brothers were wild men behind the wheel in their teens apparently.

DH always drives the cart unless I say I'd like to drive. Then, that's always ok with him. Why do I sometimes like to drive? Dunno. I think it's just fun to navigate the cart paths sometimes.

Funny thing though, when we take the car, I often drive. He commutes a long way to work and loves not to always have to drive.

I always drive - Sandy likes to relax and enjoy the view.

I always drive the car wherever we go. I have a tendency to get motion sickness occasionally but never when I drive. I think it's got to do with concentrating on the road/looking ahead all the time when I'm doing the driving. Plus Sandy likes to be chauffeured! :D

Heck, we've had many, many cars over the course of time that she's never driven. She's just rather have me do all the driving!

Bill :)

i was going to ask about garmin and your post summed it up....our rental i am told has two golf carts ...so the plan is one map in each cart.....and we have 2 garmins.....one in each cart.......my fear is the wife will like driving the cart and she will never leave the shopping areas.....

What difference does it make. Sometimes I drive sometimes my wife does just depends on who feels like it. I wish I would win powerball then someone else could drive both of us!

In our village the men must drive if the address starts with an even number and women must drive if the address starts with an odd number. Obviously single men must purchase addresses starting with even numbers, etc. or not drive at all. Gays are allowed to ride bikes, but not drive vehicles.

Hope this helps. ;)
