Ace Hardware on 466 has them in stock for $25 or so. Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, etc do that carry that size. Munn's has them for $50+

The heating guy showed me how bad fitting the generic ones from the local retailers are compared to carrier brand. Very interesting lets a LOT of air bypass the filter. Just food for thought.

Has anyone talk to AC guy about getting back to a normal size filter.
(1 INCH THICK) I think a $25 to $35 dollars for a PAPER filter is bull***t. Its a air return just like any older home system. This is not a heap filter or some electronic filter its PAPER! HELLO! I remember the first time I price that filter and my blood started to boil. In fact, it still gets me going! I know SUN COOL sell it for $75 with a check up ba, ba, ba....................... I just replaced my WHOLE system in VA and I don't have a 4" thick filter. Carrier and the others systems who need a 4" thick filter have built a good mouse trap for seniors and I like to get out of the trap. I wonder what Chuck TV AC guy says about this filter and changing back to a normal size?

I have been told that you can use the 1" filters, but you will need to change them every month. We run our fan 24-7 and after 6 months the filter needed to be changed. I also purchased MERV 13 which is a little higher rating than the MERV 11 that the service people supply.

Shopping Cart - Filters America (http://www.filtersamerica.com/Cart.aspx)

Try this site. Prefer OEM filters that fit snugly in air handler, also MERV 11.

My Carrier unit uses 16x20X4, I found them on Amazon for $27 for a Merv 2 pack. They were sold by a third party 'Complete Filtration Services', so they didn't qualify for free shipping. The 2 pack with UPS shipping was about $35 total and I received them in about a week. If you need a different size, just enter the dimensions in your Amazon search. I found many selections of the 19x20x4 size and all were under $30 for a package of two.

Here is a link 16x20x4 MERV 8 Pleated Air Filter (2-Pack) - Amazon.com

Wherever you buy your filters just make sure you buy the EXACT size that was originally in you unit. Some of the filters that you can buy are close but not exact fit. I was told by my sun cool guy if you install the wrong size and anything goes wrong with your system , you eat it. If your filter is slightly undersized it is not doing the correct job.

I bought ours at ACE. When we had the 1 year check up, the SUN AC guys said,oh good, you already replaced the filter. I asked if this aftermarket filter was ok, and he said absolutely! Cost me about $23, I think... we bought it with an ACE discount coupon of some kind.

I think the filters at Ace Hardware is just a little bit thinner. This could actually let dirt sneak in. Could possibly void your warranty. :(

A 1" filter pleated MERV 7 will work and should be replaced every 3 months. There are two things to consider:
1. The filter rack will need to be adjusted from 4" to a 1" so the filter does not move.
2. The filter is tight fitting so no air bypasses the filter element.

The 4" filter give you more filter surface and is supposed to last longer. For the added expense It is not worth it.
I use pleated filters in my HVAC system and purchase them locally.
