Villages required golf cart tires

I am sure many of you remember the big deal about golf cart tires a few years ago.

There was a list of only certain brands acceptable to be on the golf courses.I was one of those golf employees that had to check the brand ef every golfers cart tire and in addition we had to make random check of the air pressure to make sure it was with the allowable range.

What a crock this regulation was, the reasoning was that when the steering wheel was turned, certain tires and air pressures damaged the fairways. I was never aware of any tire damage to fairways before the dumb rule was introduced.

The only thing accomplished was to a cost to those that had to buy different tires and more than anything was the result of people being very upset when their cart was deemed unacceptable for use on the golf course.
So now I ask what happened to that big issue that was put out by the golf division ??? Was this just some goofy rule dreamed up by a goofy person somewhere. ???

Gracie, do you really remember the issue with the golf tires ??? The problem as explained was that certain tires and improper tire pressures damaged the golf courses. It caused a lot of anger among golf cart owners. Can you imagine pulling up to the starter shack and a golf employee coming out with a tire gauge, removing your valve caps and checking the air pressure in your tires. Following the pressure check, the employee would check the brand of your tires against a list of approved tires. Most people that had to adjust their tire pressure before using that particular golf cart weren't happy, to say the least. Others who could not use their golf cart on the courses until they purchased different tires were even more upset. Because it was such a big issue a few years ago, why is the tire issue not of any consideration today ???:gc:

Tire Policy
• Tires on golf cars to be used on any Villages
fairways must meet the following requirements:
1. The manufacturer of the tire must refer to
the tire as a “golf course tire”.
2. Tires must have a rounded vertical tread
with a maximum depth of 1/4 inches.
3. Total tire width must be a minimum of 8
inches.
4. Tire pressure must not exceed 28 psi.
5. Tires may change from year to year. We
reserve the right to modify this policy without
notice in accordance set by the tire industry.
Note: The tire policy is not applicable if playing
on executive courses and remaining on the path
at all times.

I would love to make it an issue. You apparently weren't impacted by what trook place. What is to keep someone coming up with another program just as insane. I am still a little bitter. I was prevented from playing a round of golf and ended up paying $240 out of my pocket for different tires. So if certain tires caused damage to the courses at that time, you would think they still cause damage. If this is the case, why is there no one checking the tire brands and pressures at this time.

well, warren, i guess you are gonna hafta take it up with the golf division on your own...doen't seem to be much support for stirring up an old issue here. good luck.

Where Have I been. I have played about 300 rounds of golf since moving here and never heard of this. I don't want to stir the pot, but would like to know:

Warren, what tire did you have on that was found unacceptable? That may clear this up for us. I am imagining tires like you see on monster trucks.

These were normal golf cart tires.

There were a lot of golf carts sold by dealers back when this issue came up that did not meet the new requirements posted by the golf division. The golf division put out a notice in the Daily Sun with the names/brands of the acceptable tires. If you did not have one of those names/brands, you were screwed.

For some reason, you only had to change the front tires. It was said that they would make grooves in the grass because of their construction. I think my brand had a sharper edge than the recommended brands. I had to change the front two tires on my 2002 Club Cart to meet the requirement or I could not use it to play golf.

I honestly do not remember anything about the air pressure requirement.

And yes it as a big deal back then because it cost a lot of us a lot of bucks to get into compliance.

I wondered myself what ever happened to that ruling. I just assumed that all of the cart dealers complied with the tire requirements so the problem would not recur.

It is easy to know that certain posters live in the realm of apathy.I love to deal with apathetic people, no matter what you do to them they just roll over and accept what comes their way. It was a dumb decision by someone within the golf division. When this program was introduced to the Villages residents I don't believe any other golf courses in our area had the same goofy tire rules. SAnd yes, it did cost a lot of people considerable money to meet the acceptable tire rules. Also the tire pressure was a new rule. I know for a fact that every starter shack was equipped with tire gauges which was used to acually check golf cart tire pressures. I was one of the employees who did just that. As I recall there was no actual research or evidence that certain tires damaged the golf courses. It was a pipe dream conjured up by someone in the golf division managment. :shrug:
