Hello everyone in TV
I retired in May and my home will be sold in December, so I'm looking for a place to live in TV - or the immediate area.
I have been to TV twice before and really enjoyed myself, but I've never pulled the trigger on a purchase. I'm reluctant to buy without knowing the area better.
Consequently, I'm interested in a long term rental in TV or the surrounding area. I have reviewed most of the relevant web sites for TV rentals, however, I don't know anything about the surrounding area.
So I'm asking all of my future TV buddies if they can give me any recommendations on what is outside the "bubble."
I understand if I'm outside I will not be able to enjoy everything TV has to offer, but I will be able to explore before I ultimately, hopefully, buy in TV.
Thanks for your advice.
P.S. I love to ballroom dancng (currently a student at Arthur Murray), and keeping in shape is essential, e.g. yoga, treadmill, etc.

Mr. Kris, I am a TV wannabee, and I have not visited any of these other 55 plus communities, but close to TV are Stonecrest, Del Webb Spruce Creek and On Top of The World in Ocala. I'm sure TV residents can add the name of other 55 plus communities that are fairly close to The Villages. If you check ****.com, that web site has rentals all over Florida (and other states also). Good luck in your search.

If you are trying to decide if you want to live in TV then I recommend you rent in TV. Unless you immerse yourself in these surroundings I don't know how you could possibly know if it works for you or not. Just my humble opinion.

I have visited other 55 plus communities and none of them can even come close
to T.V.
I'm just saying.....

I think I'd rent a place in Stonecrest for the following reasons:
It will almost certainly be less expensive than a rental in TV,
You can buy a golf cart and access TV town squares, stores, other facilities and many activities. This will really give you the feel of being in TV even though you will not have resident privileges.
As you get closer to purchasing a home, you will have the luxury of being nearby to look at everything. This is especially important if you are interested in a resale, which can sell very quickly.
Stonecrest has a very nice fitness center, and my understanding is that it is free. This is a perk I'd love to see in TV, but that ain't gonna happen, even though we are now told this is America's Healthiest Hometown.

What activities & facilities?
restaurants [chain and country club], movie theatres, the savannah center, church on the square [when it reopens] and shopping centers for a few.

I believe that non-Villagers can also sign up for the classes offered by the Lifetime Leaning College. It costs more than it does for Villagers

I'm confused by this post. Non residents are not restricted from ANY of the above listed. If you want to see a show, movie or concert, the non-resident fee is a little higher. Same with golf.
Non-residents may not use the country club or sports pools, and there may be some clubs or rec center activities limited to residents. But in large measure, non-residents can do just about everything in TV

All clubs and rec center activities (except for, I think, support groups) cannot be accessed by anyone without a resident OR guest ID. During the busy season, most of the exercise activities fill up with residents, who are preferenced for entry. Many of the club activities are for members only, at least after an initial visit.
Also, residents can't use the country club pools unless they are priority members. I think the full (golf) memberships allow you to use them (one or more or all depending on the level of membership). You can also get a pool priority membership if I'm not mistaken.
If you know someone who is a priority member and have an outside of the 3 counties (Lake, Sumter, Marion) driver's license, then I think you can be their guest if they are with you.

you cannot play Executive golf courses without a resident or guest ID either, only the championship courses, which are much more expensive (check out golfthevillages.com for detailed golf info)

Thanks.
You folks are awesome. That is what most impressed me when I visited TV. It was the people. The facilities were secondary.
I'm especially interested in the Lifetime Learning College because it has dance classes taught by Arthury Murray alum.
And Stonecrest definitely deserves a look-see.

However, I'm slightly perplexed. Residents pay fees to use the fitness centers located in the rec. centers?
Don't the residents own the rec. centers through the VCCD, and by virtue of the amenity payments to pay off the bonds floated by the VCCD on the residents behalf?
It sounds like buying a home, albeit with mortgage (amenity) payments, and having to pay an extra fee for using the kitchen.
This is a learning process for me.
But, as I said it's still all about the awesome TV residents.

So, the fitness center is not under the amenity fees?
I guess we just assumed it was. Thanks for mentioning that.
Not that it matters...

Mr. Kris,
Have you done a Life Style Visit (LSV) yet. I would suggest that first. YOu will get a good feel for TV and can check the surroundings too. Hook up with a sales associate. Hang out at the resturants and pubs in TV. It is so easy to meet people. Go the the country club shops and talk to people. You will get a good and honest profile.
We did. And we are building as I write.

To clarify a couple of earlier posts about the use of Recreation Center facilities by non-residents.
At least as I understand it.
The only time non-residents may attend an event in a Rec Center is if it is with a "medically-oriented, non-funded" support group. This was an issue a couple-three years ago, as some folks thought the place would be overwhelmed with outsiders. My group kept detailed records for months. We never had more than 5-6 out-siders at any one meeting, and seldom any more than that in the long term.
I do believe, also, that a Resident may host a private party and invite non-residents. But this is at a charge and soesn't happen all that often.
