We want to replace gas appliances & furnace

Dad hates gas! We would like to replace the furnace, range and hot water heater w/ electric. Any suggestions. The home was built in 2004.

It can be done. But it will not be that cheap. First I would check with an AC/heating dealer and an appliance dealer to see if they would do it and what it would cost. Sometimes these dealers will contract the whole job out since you will need to run electric to the places where the AC/heating and appliances are.

FYI: You are probably also talking about the dryer.

An all electric home would probably require 200 amp electrical service. Since the house was originally set up for gas appliances, it probably has 150 amp service. This change would require a larger service entrance cable (which is buried) and a new electrical service panel. Another expense to consider...doable but expensive.

when we had our home built we had it set up to use gas or electric and all points of use plumbed and wired accordingly.

You need a reliable, honest contractor to estimate and do the job correctly and completely. I'd call Chuck Farrell Inc in Lady Lake. His company is highly thought of by many folks here in TV.

I think we have 200 amp service. I will need to check on that. Any other contractors? The dryer is electric, but I don't know why.

Central Florida is noted for having the most lightning strikes and if it hits your home well everything is shut down. With gas you have some residual living. Gas is better for control cooking lower in costand owing to domestic drilling/fracking plenty of reserves and reasonable costs.

Given the costs to move from gas to electric you may want to determine the payback period. We had all electric for a long time and could not ait to get back to gas.

If you have spare load capacity and a vacant double slot for a 40 amp 220V breaker in your electric panel for the kitchen stove you have it made if the furnace would not be a problem and the dryer is already electric. Running the wire for an electric range should not be that much expense. A 2004 build no doubt was required to have spare capacity and unless it has been used for other purposes should handle a kitchen stove.

The electric air handler/electric furnace for a heat pump would need a 35 amp 220V breaker. Outside unit should be wired already (35 amp 220V) most likely to handle a heat pump.

A 2004 original AC unit would be getting on up in it's life so it might be a good time to change it out.

Most if not all of the newer homes south of CR 466A are all electric.

Our home has natural gas. The dryer has both a gas and an electric service. Not sure if the stove has both options. Check yours...you might get lucky.
