View Full Version : A New Record

Today while riding my bicycle at about 25 MPH in the designated lane on one of our 25 MPH roads, a golf cart passed me with an enormous speed difference. I wanted to know how fast it was going and I had to get up to 30 MPH to keep pace with it. Having standard, non-street legal carts pass bicycles at 26 or 27 MPH is fairly common, but 30 MPH is a new record. And if the bicycle computer says 30 MPH, you can take that to the bank. It's one of the most accurate speed / distance measuring devices.

I imagine there will be folks who say that it's a very small minority of people who drive their carts over the legal 20 MPH limit, just as there are folks who say it's a small minority of people who save seats at the town squares, or walk their dogs irresponsibly, or do the various other things that irritate people on this forum.

I'm not so sure the minority is truly "very small" but even it if is, a small percentage of the very large number of people that live here is still a large number of self-centered, selfish people that you run into everyday and everywhere. There is no answer expected, this is just an observation.

However, I do have a related question. Do you suppose that the level of civility in public places is better or the same in a much smaller community such as Stonecrest or Spruce Creek, where people may feel it is more likely that they will know or meet again, the people they encounter in the public and community areas?

bob - did you ever wonder if the cart that passed you might be operated by a resident of stonecrest?

re your ? - my bet is much the same - arrogance is arrogance; entitlement is entitlement. neither attitude is dependent on where one lives.

He could get ticketed for driving an unlicensed vehicle because he was driving over 20mph. It irks me though that YOU are also driving an unlicensed vehicle but the law says it's OK for you to drive over 20mph. You have no license plate, pay no state tax for using the road, and can drive on roads that golf carts can't.
I've got to say I always give bikes plenty of room, more than the 3' rule, but would like to know why bikes have more leeway than golf carts? I'm sure it's a political thing being that in this country there are more bikes than golf carts. That said, it's just not right.

Doing 30 on a good racing bike is cruising. Not at all unusual.

Ok, so the cart passed you while you were going 25mph, then you decide to go over the posted speed limit to prove a point. Since when does two wrongs make a right?? Are you the same biker who complains when you get passed by a golf cart, but can't stop at stop signs or grant the right-of-way in the round-abouts?
It appears you're simply po'd because that darned cart passed you and you hate to be passed. Get over it!!

How many times do we see a group (herd, pack?) of bicyclers in a line all going through stop signs without a blink of braking? All of them should be ticketed and given hefty fines and have their spokes taken away.

There is no answer expected, this is just an observation.I have not experienced what you describe as I have rarely driven a golf cart in TV. However I do understand your feeling about what kind of does this sort of thing. I'd like to relate and incident I had last year at either the Walmart or Target on 441.

You know how there are extra wide isles in these kinds of stores with enough room to stock items in the middle virtually making it two isles? Well, I was riding my mobility scooter on the right side of the center stock when suddenly I hear a woman approaching from behind me loudly and in a not so friendly way say "Beep-beep! Move, you're in my way" as she must have had to slow down and get delayed at least a whole two to five seconds. To make it worse, if she wasn't so lazy (or had some other attribute)to just move to the other side of the stock and the left part of the isle, she would had have clear sailing without missing a beat.

I'll spare you my thoughts and what I said to her as she rapidly passed me following her snooty nose and I guess I'll just sum this all up by saying... Yes Bob47, they do exist, live and breath!

I must agree with 'Shimpy' that I have never understood why bicycles have easier rules than golf carts. After all, we are far more protected in a golf cart with 4 wheels than in a bicycle, yet our speed must be slower and we cannot drive them on the road (unless marked). I just don't get that law!!! Just because it's alwyas been that way doesn't make it right.

but don't forget that you can also do others much more damage in a speeding golf cart

if a pedal bike doing 25 mph hits your cart doing 20 mph you'd hardly notice

if the reverse, the cyclist would most likely be hospitalised

Bicycles don't pay taxes because they do not impact the roads the way motorized vehicles do. They only impact impatient drivers.

I think I missed the part where this rude, selfish, uncivil person flipped you a bird or hit you or knocked you off your bicycle. Because if he simply passed you going over the speed limit, I can't understand why it has upset you enough to write a four paragraph complaint. What do you do when someone on the interstate passes you doing 80?
You live in freaking Disney world for adults! Enjoy it and stop looking for things to annoy you!

How can a golf cart impact or cause more damage due to usage of the road than a bicycle? That's an old talking point that doesn't hold water. My golf cart weighs only 550 lbs and the road is designed, I'm sure to accommodate trucks that weigh in excess of 10,000 lbs. Your bike and my golf cart is insignificance as to how they impact the roads.

I think the law is that all motorized vehicles must be registered. A bicycle does not have a motor. If bicycles on the road bug you, no amount of logic or information will change your mind. Also, I think those heavy trucks you mention pay far more to travel our roads than you would for a LSV just as an automobile pays more than for a LSV.

Oh, and a bicycles weighs less tha 10 lbs..at east a road bike does.

Golf carts don't have to be registered. LSVs, yes. Golf carts, no.

Thanks Betty...I couldn't have said it better myself. Why is everyone so concerned about people speeding . My cart goes pretty fast & I get all kinds of comments when I pass people. I don't pass unless I know it's safe to do so.:shrug:

I don't much care what ANYBODY does unless it impacts me. If the cart driver was speeding - thats their problem if they get caught UNLESS it is reckless and endangers me and my cart. If a biker doesn't stop at a stop sign - again its their problem if they get ticketed or not. It becomes a problem ONLY if it represents a threat to me. I'm not the policeman, judge or God. I answer for my actions only. So I don't really care if someone speeds or does some other violation of TV law. I don't answer for them - they do. When I might get involved is if they endanger me. Ah, one more of those who believes the speed laws are just a suggestion and does not apply to them.

Remember that when you have to appear in court for a hefty fine or when your insurance company refuses to pay a liability claim since your golf cart goes faster than 20 mph. It could happen!

It is so much easier to obey the law. Hopefully, you did not teach your kids it is okay to break laws they do not like.
