Where To Re-Cycle?

For several years I've dropped my re-cyclables at the re-cycling center just off Rolling Acres Road, south of CR 466. Last Saturday I took a load of newspapers, cardboard, and old paint to drop off. I was stopped and asked for a photo ID. It turns out that center is only usable by residents of Lake County. They were not the least bit helpful in suggesting where the Sumter County re-cycling center was located.

I did a little research on the internet, on the Sumter County website, and I'm still lost on where the county center is located, it's hours, etc. I did find a reference to re-cycling in Sumterville. But while I'm a big fan of re-cycling, it seems unreasonable to require Villages residents to drive 20 miles south, taking about 45 minutes each way to do my duty to recycle. Most of The Villages is in Sumter County, so there are probably 75,000 residents facing the same problem.

Am I missing something here? Or shall I attend the next county board meeting at Colony Cottage and "make a suggestion"?

I put my newspapers & cardboard out on Thursdays for the recycle pick-up.
Sumter has drop off days for paint etc., but don't know when.

The mission of the Solid Waste Department is to provide the citizens of Sumter County excellent service while maintaining a cost effective Citizen's Drop Off Area (CDA) that follows the guidelines of local, state, and federal rules and regulations. In addition, the employees of the Solid Waste Department promote a safe work environment not only for themselves, but for the public as they visit our facility.

RESPONSIBILITIES


Operating the Citizen's Drop Off Area (CDA)
Accept and dispose of residential/household class 1 waste materials (garbage)
Support recycling operations for citizens who recycle their residential material
Provide facilities for residential: waste tires, batteries, scrap metal, cardboard, brush and construction and demolition debris, at the CDA
Manage and report on the closed landfill in cooperation with FDEP
Coordinate and support the annual hazardous waste "Amnesty Day" in Sumter County each Spring
Submit the Annual Solid Waste and Recyclable Materials Report
Provide commercial waste haulers with an in-County disposal site (currently Sumter Sanitation in Wildwood)

You might check Village Community Development Districts (http://www.districtgov.org) then click on sanitation information on the left. There is all sorts of information on the recycling program in The Villages. Hope this helps

You can drop off cardboard and newspaper at the Sherriff's Office parking lot in the recycle bins at 466 and Morse.

Just wondering, why would you take newspaper to that location? Is it a charity?

The curb side recycling program is pretty good in TV. The link below spells it out and for anything hazardous there is a number to call about "Amnesty Days"

Two common items that the curb side program will not pick up are; plastic bags and styrofoam. I take both of those to my local Publix as they have recycle bins in the front of stores for both .... and they are one of the VERY few that accommodates styrofoam.

We take it there because it is across the street from where we live and they have bins for newspaper and cardboard. I am not sure if it is for charity. I will look next time we are there, I do not remember seeing anything posted for charity but that would be a bonus if it were.

There are recycling bins at both St Timothy's and St Mark's Catholic Churches.

I did the same thing, but thankfully they took my last load of hazardous recycling and then told me to go away!

However, some few weeks ago there was a small, very small, article in our local newspaper The Sun, about recycling. I will quote:

9:00am to 3:00pm DECEMBER 7 - The Villages Sumter County Service Center front parking lot, 7375 Powell Road, Wildwood.
Household Batteries, electronics and computer, chemical and paints and the list goes on and on. It is a real hazard waste collection. I'm assuming this is in the area of the new Library near Colony?

Maybe one of us could remember to post this on this site at the end of November as a reminder.

Here's my favorite recycling site. Tells you where to get rid of everything....paint, batteries, electronics,etc. No need to wait for a special day. Just type in what you are looking to recycle at the top and a list of recycle places will come up.
Then click on the one you are interested in to get restrictions, hours, etc.
Some are drop off, some will pick up.
Best Buy has a great recycling program. Staples and Sams Club also recycle many items.

The UPS Store in Spanish Plaines shop ctr will accept styrofoam for recycling.

Our church has bins behind the church for recycling. Also the funds from the recycled cans helps to help others...if you have a church in the area check with them as well.

You can recycle newspaper at St Vincent's as well.

We need to recycle the appropriate items curbside. If we do not support the curbside service, the price will be increased for everyone.

Absolutely, make a visit to the Sumter County Board meeting on April 22 at Colony Rec. to make some noise to request a mobile pick-up at least once a year that is more convenient and closer for Villages residents to use. And suggest they PUBLICIZE the event far in advance and frequently so that residents will learn about it and be sure to bring their potentially hazardous items to be safely disposed of.
