Maggie May was found as a stray and taken to a Polk County Animal Shelter. Due to some trauma, she had a severe laceration (very deep and extensive) all the way around her lower belly, which was closed with 65 staples.
The staples were removed and the wound was bandaged. It became infected and the vet had to do more suturing and cleaning of the wound. Maggie May had several surgeries and Polk County took very good care of her, but no one came to claim her at the shelter, so Florida Dachshund Rescue stepped up to rescue her. She is very friendly, already spayed, heartworm negative and needs a dental.
The shelter told us Maggie May would need to go to the vet to get her bandage changed. She had a wet-to-dry bandage on and it had to be changed under anesthesia every 2 days, because when it is pulled off, it rips off dead tissue. We took her to a vet yesterday, when she was picked up at the shelter. They felt she was probably mauled and shaken by a big dog. Maggie May will still require further surgeries. The next one is scheduled for tomorrow, Monday 8/19/13. Please wish her well in her recovery!
