I was just reading about this. I had to look up a new word; "twerk". Oh boy she isn't a sweet little thing for sure, is she?

Not my cup of tea. I have seen many generations of beautiful and sensual singers and leading ladies but this is beyond what I enjoy seeing.

Sure is different from her Hannah Montana persona.

You all know your parents all said the same thing about Elvis and his pelvis. What's the matter with kids today? There really would be no point if it didn't offend certain people. Manet (1863) managed to shock the finer people in society. This isn't new.

The way she danced isn't new. When I taught high school, the dances and proms were much worse. I finally said no I didn't want to chaperone. She was mild in comparison to what I saw.

Guess I have a new word to look up on my computer at home tonight. Last week I learned a new definition of the name "Molly". And no, this is not what my cat, Molly, is named after. If you hear the word "Molly" in a song your grandchildren or younger relatives are listening to, you'd better look up the definition on line.

Guess the Hannah Montana image wasn't bringing in the $ any longer. My 11 year old niece used to love to watch Hannah Montana.

This is when I wish all high-school grads could go through military boot camp without enlisting up front. I think at the end of boot camp, many would join the military because of the transformation and accomplishments they never thought possible/bearable for themselves.

How to Twerk | Club Dance Moves - YouTube

The lady here seems to be using it as a workout routine. Wow. You should see her thighs shaking. I would NOT recommend she do this in public, but it's too late!

I bow to you Blueash, kids were your business and I guess that each generation of beautiful young women on stage, screen and television were kind of pushing the envelope. I remember thinking. WHAT is this Madonna doing..and I guess my parents generation thought strapless gowns were over the top.

Maybe because my generation wouldn't look too hot doing what she is doing and maybe because we feel a little envy? I don't know. I just have a gut reaction that it wasn't.....entertaining?

Oh well. Now I am so aware of posters gonna call me old. sigh.

I am wondering why anyone in The Villages would be looking at the MTV Awards. No, I do not know what a twerk is (nor do I care enough to look it up anywhere) nor do I know what Molly means (once more, I do not care). If someone held a gun to my head and said I had to name a song that Miley Cyrus sang, they would have to kill me. I do remember the one song her father sang.

The OP said "Parents, hope you had TV turned OFF." To which forum was the OP posting that warning? :boxing2:

I agree with every letter and word in your post.

I didn't see any MTV awards. I just follow the news things on my computer like a sheep.

Sigh. Now I am not only old but stupid.

I will be so glad when it gets cool enough for me to play golf again.

I don't watch the MTV awards any longer. It seems to be a contest of who can be the most outrageous and be the talk around the water cooler. Remember when Kayne West got up when Taylor Swift was getting her award and said that someone else deserved it more? It has all gotten way out of hand and I don't care to partake. I guess Myley's antics worked. Everyone is talking about her......just what she wanted. The producer should never have let that kind of act on TV.

It's okay, Gracie. I don't watch that stuff either. We are becoming our parents as we age, my husband and I... as in, we are so out of the loop on this stuff, and it's only when something like "twerk" comes up on the forum that we even get the least bit caught up. If it weren't for this forum I would know little of what's happening with the younger generation now.

My precious, lovely daughter-in-law... we were driving through NYC on some road by the river, where there were grass beaches. She said, "Look at that banana hammock!" I'm looking around for a hammock. My son said, "Umm, Mom... she's talking about his bathing suit."

Miley Cyrus and the issues of slut-shaming and racial condescension - The Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/music/miley-cyrus-and-the-issues-of-slut-shaming-and-racial-condescension/2013/08/26/f3aee436-0e68-11e3-bdf6-e4fc677d94a1_story.html)

From the article:

".....By implying that Cyrus is somehow creating a minstrel act of sorts by including black dancers in her act, you are implying that there is something lesser than about such an act. As if it’s completely impossible that she simply enjoys and respects the talents of those she chooses to work with. In short, it is inherently racist to imply that there is anything wrong with anyone other than black women twerking..."

What a bunch of crap. Is there ANYTHING offensive to which the term 'racist' is not utilized to inflict white guilt????

I just saw a short clip of the amateurish stripper dance Cyrus did, played on Greta VanSusteren's show On the Record because discussion of that is coming up in a couple of minutes. All I could think was "What a pitiful girl, having so little self respect, and no adults around concerned enough to teach her to protect her privacy and self."

Sad to say, she could be the next celebrity made a victim of some psycho stalker. Where are the adults in this picture??

It really is sad to see a young person being used like this by all the handlers who make money off such exploitation of a child. After watching gifted child stars like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston being slowly destroyed by this same lifestyle and being used as a cash cow for everyone around them, you'd think she and her parents would learn. But I guess not.

Of course she is his little girl. That's why it's so pathetic that they chuckle at this embarrassment and the users of a child.

It has nothing to do with the direction of our culture. I am sure many were shocked. Which is exactly what she and her management team wanted. The free press whether it good or bad has been enormous. You can't buy that much advertising. She is just another one in a long list of shock moments on this show starting with Howard the Fartman sterns to the lesbian kiss with Madonna and Britney. I am not shocked and not bothered. I simply ignore.

Bad all the way around, in my opinion but that thing she did with her tongue was the worst. Reminded my of Regan (Linda Blair) while she was demon-possessed in The Exorcist. Creepy.

I am not going to read your link. BECAUSE I watched this whole presentation last night...muted on the TV on the lanai as we had company. Back door neighbors dropped in and we just muted the TV and sat down to chat. It was repeated several times. Several times, and we commented on it as we talked of it and other things.

Race did not enter into my mind and has not entered my mind. None of the other folks saw anything to do with race in this dance presentation thingy, whatever you want to call it. I can't imagine how race could have anything to do with this. I am not reading this.

Alright I will.

The craving for a worldwide audience, regardless of what kind of sicko stalkers are salivating and lurking, is something I'd think grownups would protect her from.

Instead, they use her for cash.

Gracie, you are NOT old. It is really sad to see a young woman degrading herself in that way. I love music, wish I could 'twerk' (not in public!!!) but I find it disturbing that women today feel that they can't make it in music unless they get obscene. Watching what she was doing was NOT sexy, there are young females that could put her dancing skills to shame. When I see this stuff, I can only assume that their musical talents are lacking. Look at people like Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry (campy as heck but not pornographic). If you want to see something funny...the next time you are around your kids, tell them that you learned to twerk and want to show them how you do it!

I have for your consideration the most amazing link. In 2008, yes this was aired in 2008, The Onion had a story predicting that in 2013 Miley Cyrus would be depleted. Your laugh for the day. You will have to sit thru a 30 second commercial. Do not miss the crawler at the bottom of the screen. Gotta love "McDonald's adds employee benefits to dollar menu"

‘SYTYCD’ Recap: Top 4 Revealed, Miley & Carly Reviled | Reality Rocks (New) - Yahoo! Music (http://ca.music.yahoo.com/blogs/reality-rocks/sytycd-recap-top-4-revealed-miley-carly-reviled-074037042.html)

SYTYCD. This is a pretty good show with very talented dancers on it, good judges, remarkable host, and great choreographers.

But the proceedings got a little shadier, and squirmier, when Jesse and head judge Nigel Lythgoe targeted the pop starlet with the biggest target on her back right now: a certain foam-fingering, teddy-bear-twerking performer from this week's MTV Video Music Awards. Critiquing a hard-hitting hip-hop performance by Amy and Fik-Shun, Nigel said, "It just goes to show that you don't have to put it in your face to be sexy, Miley Cyrus!" Then Jesse chimed in by telling Fik-Shun, "Your solo erased everything that happened with Miley twerking; I was cleansed!" Huge audience guffaws ensued.
