We do not plan to bring our current mattress with us. We both feel that it has given us our moneys-worth. Time to move on.
We have looked at both the Tempurpedic and the Sleep Number bed.
I am here to take a poll! :-)
Which do you have and would you buy it again?
We worry that the Sleep Number will have an irritating line between the two sides. I noticed that once in a store when checking them out. That was a few yrs ago. Is it a problem if you cross over the center line or sleep in the middle of the bed??
We worry that the Tempurpedic would sleep hot. We have heard others comment on that and for us that would be a deal breaker. I understand there is a "cool" version. Anyone know about that one?
Also the Tempurpedic seems to sink in at the edge easily, when sitting on the edge to put on your shoes etc. Does the edge hold up for you?
thanks for the info! As always!

I've been wondering as well..........and asking various family members for their opinion. Isn't there a third type? Which is best for arthritic joints?

We have had the Sleep Number for about 15 years and still love it. We spent a few days with relatives a while back and slept on a Tempurpedic and my back hurt for 2-3 weeks afterward. I would recommend the Sleep Number.

We had a Sleep Number for many years. I loved it, my wife always said hated it. When we went back to a "regular" matress this year she now wishes we had the Sleep Number again.

people love or hate sleep number. I decided against it bc it is after all, an air mattress.
tempurpedic is more expensive and softer the LESS foam it has. I had one that was high foam (firmer) and hated it. It was difficult to get out of and move around on. hard to explain..very uneasy feeling, like being stuck in it.

We purchased a sleep number and were extremely dissatisfied with it. Didn't buy a high end model and bed was so low we felt we were sleeping on the floor. Also mattress was shallow and sheets kept coming off. At additional expense, we returned it. Didn't find any superior comfort over traditional beds. Perhaps a higher priced model with a thicker mattress would make a difference as many folks swear by Sleep Number beds.

Check out Relax in Comfort at Sumter landing. They have both for demonstration.

Good question!! We bought a Serta "Genius" memory foam about 2 years ago from Mattress Firm in The Villages. (By the way, great store and service) The Genius is an "extra firm" mattress, that is needed in our household. It was fantastic in the beginning, but now starting to sag in the spots we sleep. Years ago you could turn over the mattress, but not today. Also would get warm in area of position you sleep in. I've been wondering about the sleep number, and they way it operates. I almost bought the Temper-pedic, but thought the "Genius" had that extra firmness to it. Will be watching to see what people think.

I think the Tempurpedic is hot, but I will admit it is comfortable on my back, legs, etc. . My husband says it is not hot, but most mornings I wake up uncovered and (ick) sorta sweaty neck. he says I am crazy, it is not the mattress, but it is.As to the edge being soft, I find it the same all over the mattress..

I've had a sleep number bed since the mid 90's. I had back problems before I got it and had very few espisodes since, usually after traveling and getting a soft mattress somewhere. Not only can you adjust the firmness of the sleep number but if the foam edges begin to sag after sitting on it repeatedly to put on shoes, you can just replace the foam edges, not the entire mattress. If you don't like a firm mattress you might not want to get it. If you keep it soft you might feel the divider in the middle, if you keep it firm it is difficult to find. To me the advantage is being able to keep a firm mattress over time while traditional mattresses begin to sag and most of the high end mattresses can't be flipped over.

We have had the Sleep Number for about 8 years. I highly recommend you do NOT buy it. While it is comfortable, about 2 years into having it, the numbers on our remotes stopped showing up. We can't tell what number we are at. We looked into buying new ones but they were a couple hundred dollars. We researched it and found that it is a common problem. And we do feel the divider between our sides. Obviously if one is harder than the other, you kind of "roll" onto the softer side if you are on the boarder. Our next bed will be a tempurepedic. Our friend has one and absolutely loves it.

We have one of each, a number bed down in TV and a foam one up north. I find I can get the "just right" feeling better with the number one and I can adjjust it if I want. Not that I have to do that often but it has happened. DH feels he gets a better sleep on the number one and his back feels better on it. So we are looking into gettng a number bed up here later this year. Looking forward to getting to TV in 3 weeks and back to the number bed!

We have had our sleep number for about 3 years and are still enjoying it. Had to replace a high dollar 2 year old traditional mattress after it began to sag in the middle.
It has exceeded our expectations. I especially like the fact you can adjust the firmness according to your current needs. A standard mattress stays the same even if your body or needs change - a sleep number can be adjusted accordingly. If you have "night sweats" they now sell a temperature control mattress that can be added to perfect your sleeping temperature comfort (yes it is dual zone).

We had a sleep number bed in the Tiffin Motorhome we owned. We found it extremely comfortable since we could adjust the firmness. I found with a softer setting I had no aches and pains when I woke up in the morning. We now have a sleep number bed in our home in TV. Best bed we've ever had.

We appreciate our Sleep Number bed so much that after 20 years we still have ours up north and bought a new king size one for TV's! We two had a remote problem as well as a leaking mattress cell and both were replaced after 3 years of use at no charge. The newer compressor is more quite and the remote is designed better (easier to read and use). When we travel we always end up wishing we had our mattress as we generally have a restless night of sleep and I have a sore back. Do look at both and then make you decision. We did for the one in TV and decided against the foam as it is hot and Not adjustable as I like a firmer mattress and my wife a lesser firm nights sleep!

Four years ago we bought a mattress from Bed-In-A-Box (http://www.bedinabox.com/memory-foam-mattresses.html). Paid a little less than $600 for a queen, and just got a box spring (just a foundation, no springs) from Sam's Club. Very happy with it. It came FedEx compressed into a fairly large and heavy box. It is a firm mattress, which we like. I see that they now have many more models at higher prices.

I can't speak about a sleep number but we love our Tempurpedic. We have a Serta memory foam in our guest room and it sleeps very warm. There are different firmness levels and the softer ones retain more body heat.

I have a soft-side water bed topped with a memory foam topper. There are dual water mattresses encased in quilted covers. You can adjust the firmness with the amount of water in them. Just right for me!

We got a Serta I-Comfort. It has a top layer that is supposed to "wick out" the heat. Wife loves it, but I wish we had gotten one level softer. It is substantially less costly than Tempurpedic. We were also given the option that if after 3 months we didn't like it, the store would take it back and we could get something else. The 3 months was because it takes some getting used to. ( tho' I don't think there would be a rebate if a less costly mattress was chosen) We did try the number, but never could get it quite where we wanted it.

What kind of comment is that? Sounds like you have something against sleep number but didn't like the choice you made either.Sounds like you made the wrong choice.

We have had a tempurpedic-like bed and have had it for several years and just purchased two for TV. The heat was never a problem "up north", but for TV we purchased the serta I-cool. We did try the sleep number beds and really disliked them. It sorta was like a water bed (like years ago) except it is air. Having said that I have family who love the sleep number.
Every person sleeps differently, so I do recommend that you try out each bed for yourself. Take your time and lay in each bed for 20 minutes or so because this is an important and expensive purchase.

My husband and I have had a Tempurpedic for 10+ years. When we purchase a new mattress in the next couple of years (when we move to TV full time) we will buy another Tempurpedic mattress. We love it! My in-laws had a Sleep number and hated it, now have a Tempurpedic and love it.

I had a sleep number bed for several years and really did not like it. My wife at the time, preferred her side soft and squishy, I on the other hand, preferred very firm. The problem (as others have stated) was the dividing line. I often had nightmares of falling off of a cliff. It seems like I had to hang on to my side so that I wouldn't fall into the valley of death. Ha, sounds funny but it's true. My vote is for anything other than sleep number, however...everyone is different. Kinda like saying a certain movie is not worth watching.

Sold mattresses for many years. I prefer a regular style no flip mattress set (mid to upper mid price)
We have a Simmons but Serta or any of the other brands are good. Remember you generally get what you pay for. Too cheap is bad too expensive and you are paying for fluff.

Another vote for Relax in Comfort. The salesperson spent an hour with us explaining every aspect of the bed even though we told her we had already gotten our beds (from Saatva.com) Love my bed by the way But I would have bought their bed if I had wanted an adjustable bed. Super comfortable.

I saw a Beauty Rest commercial on TV...briefly but saw that it had a section that was cooling and the coils were wrapped individually I believe. It looked well designed and constructed. I need to google it I suppose.

You can now have them both in a Tempur Pedic.
We purchased a king size Tempur Pedic at Mattress Firm approx 3 months ago which is a brand new model that has controls for each side to adjust firmness in both the upper and lower regions of your body. Each person can adjust their own side to their likeness.
I don't have the model name or number handy but just stop by or call Mattress Firm for info.

We've had our sleep number for 10 years and will NEVER go back. It's the only piece of furniture we brought when we moved here! Before the sleep number my hubby would wake up every morning moaning and groaning with aches and pains but not after sleeping on the sleep number! We've made converts of our children and friends too! There has been some talk about mold problems but I've checked ours and found none!

Wow, lots of responses!!
But no consensus! It seems that people either love or hate each of these. So you guys really weren't very helpful!! Haha!
I guess we will have to do some shopping around and see what we think. I just hate to make an expensive mistake! I have made enough of those in my life!
Thanks for your responses. I am just tired of buying mattresses that start to sag and have depressions after a couple of yrs. The research continues.....

I feel exactly like you do about not wanting to buy another expensive mattress that had saggy spots after a couple of years. I had a Tempur Pedic pillow that I just loved and found very comfortable so I wanted to try the beds, however by the time we were ready for a new mattress my pillow had broken down in spots and had saggy spots. I was afraid of that happening in my mattress also. My in laws have the Sleep Number and love theirs and my husband talked me into getting one. From the first I could feel the baffles under me. I had to sleep on sheepskin and also an extra quilt folded in half under me and still I could feel it. My husband said it was like "the Princess and the Pea". I could never get comfortable but my husband always loved his side. Unlike everyone else, when I slept in the middle of our king size bed I was much more comfortable. Just this week we bought an additional high density foam to go inside our bed (its also a pillow top) and it's finally ok and I can say that I do like it and I am comfortable at last.
The BEST sleep is a 20 year old queen size Serta in our guest room that we replaced many years ago when we got a king size. They don't make them like they used to I guess.

We bought a i10 sleep number in July and are loving it. We started with a Full King but after a few nights of me wanting to watch late night TV in a upright position and the MRS wanting to lay down, we converted to a Split King. Love the ability to go soft after 18 holes or firmer when I need to. After a Serta Queen, having a King is awesome. Of course the MRS hit me up for a Sleigh Bed as well to finish it off.
