I just read this article on an apparently legal deterrent to sex offenders residing in any given neighborhood.

Good idea or bad?

Love that a community, not the government, took care of their own. Good news story.

I can see almost unlimited problems with this. For starters, it isn't a matter of building *a* playground. Given the size of TV, it would take a whole lot of playgrounds - where is the land coming from? (Are you volunteering your yard?) Seems like you would have to sacrifice Rec center facilities or golf course holes. And I think it might create some issues with our 55plus status as well as some hefty insurance issues. And I suspect you would need to overcome more than a little resistance about the amount of amenity fees that would be need to build and maintain the playgrounds.

According to the article, a "playground" need only have one piece of equipment, so not a lot space would be needed. As to affecting the status of TV, I don't see how it could -- we already have a playground by Lake Sumter Landing. It would be nice if our grandkids had a few more places to run around and play. Imagine a day of golf cart rides going from one rec center to climb on the pirate ship, then to the next for the swings and so on. Could be great fun for all.

I certainly wouldn't mind something that would at least prevent registered sex offenders from residing here. Of course, there's still the risk of the unregistered ones or the ones who were never caught.

Say... why couldn't all those rec centers, (shuffle board, bocce, etc.) be considered playgrounds?

Good idea but it won't do much for those that still have not been caught the first time and are still unknown. Still need to be aware.

I think this was meant for communities where families with children live - not The Villages. And even though it won't prevent all it could certainly deter most.

Always the voice of reason.

Just what would we put into a playground for a bunch of 70 yr. olds to frolic in?

Have some qualms about the sex offender registry anyway as it paints with a very broad brush and contains some people who had no intent to sexually abuse children. Could be cases of love affairs between teens which bring a statutory rape charge to one party who is a little older than the other one. I also have a problem with the idea of once a sex offender, always a sex offender. This is probably true in most cases but not all.

Before people jump on me for playing devil's advocate with this idea remember that I have fought for survivors' victims' rights-- mainly about access to practical information accessible through libraries-- with great cost to my career and family as well as often the image of my mental health since January of 1991. I have a JD from the University of Minnesota Law School (Class of 1989) and represented prisoners at Legal Assistance to Minnesota Prisoners mainly at the Minnesota Correctional Facility--Stillwater. Some of these were sex offenders and most that I recall probably would not have rehabilitated. But, a small minority had a chance of doing so. http://modvive.com/2013/08/06/examining-the-fairness-of-the-sex-offenders-registry/

I think what you have stated is correct and good food for thought.

Bizdoc,

Why don't they get really creative and put them in jail.
