We plan to purchase a sofa bed for our spare room, but would like some recommendations for the most comfortable mattress. Air mattress, memory foam...?

There are no comfortable mattresses in a sofa bed, just ones that are less uncomfortable that others.

SyrNancy, we have a sofabed in our third bedroom, and we found that if you put an inflatable mattress on top of the sofabed mattress it 1) makes a very comfortable bed, and 2) raises the mattress to a usable height. You can get a queen-size inflatable at WalMart for a decent price, and buy a less expensive sofabed.
It works for us!

If the person has back issues they will want a real bed like a murphy bed or a normal bed. I have went the air mattress route and also slept on a 6 inch memory foam. Both were on the floor. Both were very uncomfortable for me. Not enough back support. I can't imagine that a pull out couch would suffice if you plan to have company very often.

Thanks for your comments. I was thinking about using our inflatable mattress just as uujudy suggested and getting a reasonable priced sleeper couch. No, it won't be used very often and will be in an office. No wall space for a Murphy bed.

american leather out of dallas tx makes the best product ever. it`s a 4 " thick mattress that rests on plywood that is hinged so it folds up into the sofa. no springs or squeeks
