I know this has been mentioned before but a warning to anyone sitting outside on the porch at Bonifay. The flies are very annoying and caused me to leave earlier than planned.I talked to another couple on my way out, mentioned this and they said they were heading inside as husband was being pounced on by these flies.I'll try again when Oldies but Goodies are singing there but won't be staying if it's still a problem.I have sat outside at Cody's,O'Shea's,and never a fly problem there.

Don't wear perfume when eating outside. Odor attracts the bugs.

What does that tell you about Bonifay - the flies are inside too and totally annoying. We've found the food at Bonifay just okay. Cody's has great specials and no flies!

I concur with this posting. We were @ Bonifay Saturday evening to listen to the Doo Wop Group and basically the fly/knat problem ruined our evening.

The DOO WOP Group were really terrific, and how they managed to put up with it is a credit to them..hats off to them they are really, really good.

The Bonifay operation must be well aware of this on-going problem, but the bug/fly/knat situation is not the only thing wrong...the food is only, only OK... barely.

Beef Strogonouf on Penne Pasta ?? Come-On it has to be over egg noodles, plus it was TERRIBLE !!

Isn't there something that they can do to safely treat and eliminate the fly problem? Or is cost a problem?

usually a fan will keep the bugs away - they can't fly into the breeze - don't know why they haven't tried this

they do have fans behind the bar. nevertheless at Saturday's gator gathering one of our members sitting at the bar brought his own fly swatter and used it frequently.

Thank you for voicing your concerns regarding the fly problem at Bonifay.
Our first summer at Bonifay the fly problem was absolutely out of control and we hired Eco Lab pest elimination the leading provider of pest control services in the hospitality industry. After number of treatments with little or no result they brought their experts from their headquarters to review what was going on. In the process I learned a lot from the country club operator who had opened several country clubs in the Villages who informed me this problem occurred at each country club opening. He also informed me that the issue will last more than one year and it will be eliminated over time. This was basically what Eco Lab had told me. The issue from what I had been told is this land was previously cow pasture and it will take time. To which my response was not good enough. We treated, set up traps installed fans and any and all things anybody would suggest and continue to do so. Please know this issue is important and I take it seriously. In addition, if anyone would like to email me I will be glad to address any individual concerns. My team and I appreciate your comments and your patronage. Fredkarimipour@aol.com

Fred; Thanks for your comments. We consider you our neighborhood club and have always had good meals and good times.
Our group of 40 golfers on Thursday nights always have a great time and will be glad when the flies are gone.

It is nice that you appreciate their efforts to rid Bonifay of flies instead of continuing to complain as it is surely a fun and wonderful place for people to meet up. I am sure it will be rectified soon and I appreciate Fred's comments and explanations also.

Look the Restaurant not only has Fly/Gnat problems but the food really is borderline terrible.
The whole idea of going out to dinner is supposed to be a pleasurable experience,Bonifay is like most Restaurants here in the Villages...TERRIBLE..this consensus is held by the Majority of patrons. The problem is: Take it or Leave It..The snowbirds will be returning soon and the problem will continue in this case>> @BONIFAY..Fly's/Gnats and terrible food.
Oh well life goes on.

I think it's silly to blame the flies on former cow pasture. All of TV was once cow pastures. These cannot be the same flies that once annoyed the cows. Burke's is surrounded by cow pastures and they don't have flies.

Just had a memory pop in my head of an Alaskan salmon grill outdoors. They had bears coming out of the woods after the food and hired guys with big sticks to poke them if they got too close. (a bit staged I'm sure--but how about this..?)
Maybe the CC could hire a crew of dancers with electronic zappers choreographed to the doo wop music.

When Havana first opened, there was a terrible fly problem and we put floor fans around the dance floor (which also helped with the heat) and citronella candles on every table. These things controlled the problem somewhat but not completely and it took about a year to finally get rid of them.

I have spoken to the manager of Bonifay, Jim, and he told me of all the things they've been through to get rid of the flies, to no avail. We go to Karaoke every Monday night there, outside, and we bring out own flyswatters and have learned to cover the food to keep the flies under control. Jim says there is not much more they can think of but if anyone has any suggestions, I'm sure they would be interested.

Kitty, I did mention to Jim about those fly catching machines that zap the critters as they go near the electric charge. I forgot what he told me about that idea but I just can't wait until the flies are gone, they sure are annoying.

Maybe Bonifay needs to seriously consider screening in the outside area if they cannot get the problem under control. The facility is too nice to disparage so much over simple flies.

it would end some of the problems with a screen...of course some will still find a way in

I remember reading in another post about flies, put a lemon cut in half with cloves stuck in the lemon. They put them on every table and it helped, Fred perhaps it would be worth a try on the outside area. Can't remember who posted that.

I'm agreeing with screens. they don't cost nearly as much as this thread will cost them in business.

People used to pay little boys to swat flies. I know that was my husband's first "job."

We know an easy solution to the fly and bug issue. We explained to the waitstaff, left notes, called the manager, all to no avail at Bonifay. The problem is partially due to the ceiling fans being mounted too high. Flies, and most insects, cannot cope with circulating air, and patrons would be "protected" from the annoying pets, if only the manager spent the money to add extension poles to the ceiling fans. We learned this simple fix while eating outside at crab shacks up north. Tables either had their own standing fan, or tables beneath regular ceiling mount fans, were covered by fans on extender poles.

Bogie, I called Bonifay to give them a heads up on this thread that resulted in Fred's post #10. Not sure exactly what you have in mind by your post.

As a former employee of Fred and his establishments, let me assure you the fly issue is not a cleanliness one, nor is it one of neglect. Knowing Fred and his staff everything is being done to correct the problem. Lot's of time there are external or hidden reasons for things that can not be explained due to the touchy nature of things in the "bubble." Again, I have no skin in this game as I run another establishment. I just thought that someone needed to say something in support, instead of all the attacking.

My facts regarding the "Majority" of patrons. Again a very simple answer, the people that I speak to regarding Restaurants in the Villages are Very Disappointed in the quality of the food being served.

Even when the question is brought up to the management the typical answer is..I apologize but we cater to " The Villages "..meaning the food in general is Bland, Lacks Creativity, Spices (What Spices), Italian Restaurants ? all here are a Joke.

It appears that the current flock of restaurants simply do not want to chance serving decent, flavorful meals so they choose to serve Dull, run of the mill meals that basically are one step up from hospital food, or airline terminal meals.

The Restaurants really rely on the sheer numbers here knowing full well that potential customers will go out to dinner no matter what the quality of food is like, just to go out to dinner.

I rest my case..it is now in the hands of the Jury.

I guess we're all spoiled from our favorite eateries back home.I have never found any food down here that knocks me out enough that I say "gee I'll have to come back here for more of that."Just my opinion but the breakfast down here is I feel the least unsatisfactory.I'd rather have my wife's cooking but she's at the point in life that she'd rather eat out, hence the almost daily dilema. That is of course "where do we go tonight to eat?"
