View Full Version : Does Anybody Know Why the back arrow does not work all of the time in a TOTV thread

Does anybody know why this might be happening?
Occasionally on this web site, only rarely on others, I hit the browser back arrow and nothing happens. Hit and hit and hit, wait and wait and wait, and nothing. But if I go forward, for example advancing to the next page of the thread, I can hit the back arrow twice and it backs up 2 pages perfectly.
Is it perhaps that the original page changed or got refreshed and doesn't look the same to the browser (IE 9) when I try to back up?
Thanks
Bob

Oh good. I'm not the only one that's experienced it on this site.

With my iPad, I had a similar problem. I had to hit the back arrow twice to go back a page. I didn't have to hit it multiple times, just twice. Now, it works normally. Don't know why it started or why it stopped.

The last couple days (on my iPad) I've had to hit the "back" arrow twice to go back (only on this site). Today I only need to hit the back arrow once.... .....maybe gremlins!!

XAVIER posted this fix back in 2011. See https://www.talkofthevillages.com/forums/computer-questions-92/new-quirk-totv-today-46632/index4.html Post #37
I applied it today and have not been stuck yet.
Okay, here's the fix: In IE7, IE8, or IE9 click on Tools, then click on Internet Options, then click on the Security Tab. Click on the Restricted Sites Icon all the way to the right. Click on Sites (just below the Restricted Sites Icon). In the Add this Website to the Zone box, clear whatever is in there. Type *.doubleclick.com and click on Add. Go back to the Add this Website to the Zone box and clear anything that is in there. Type *.doubleclick.net and click on Add. Click on Close. Click on OK and you are done.
(I did not do the following part of the fix because the first part made it work. Z)
Click on Tools, Click on Security, Click on Custom level, Find "Launching programs and files in a IFRAME" and click on Disable. Find "Websites in less privileged web content can navigate into this zone" and click on Disable. Click on OK and Click on OK.
Go back to Talk of the Villages and go to a thread. Click on the back button and wah-lah, all fixed.

zcaveman - I occasionally have this problem as well. I don't understand if I don't do the fix why it works sometimes and not others and does that mean I would need to do the fix everytime it happens?

To see what is in your history causing the issue, RIGHT click on the "back" arrow.
When you right click you will see the order of sites you will be taken to when you hit back (left arrow). Possibly there is a site besides/in addition to doubleclick you need to add per Z's instructions.
Also using right click you can just select TOTV directly bypassing other links. It will look like this, but in your case you will see several links you do not want I suspect.

This is just my theory but I think some of the Google ads that are shown when you go to a thread have the doubleclick code in them and others do not.
I found that at times I could do a refresh and get out of the thread. At other times I could not. Applying the fix made sure I could get back all of the time.
You only need to apply the fix once.

I had this problem using Chrome with Adblock Plus. After some research, I found the problem was with Adblock Plus. I switched over to AdBlock (different program) and problem went away.
